Looking through some final stats, I don't think enough appreciation is being given to the fact that Adrian Rodriguez played the second half of the season with basically one hand and only batting left-handed and still hit .313 overall/.333 in SEC play.

That is really impressive.

Texas athletics has publicly announced plans to add 200 new scholarships department-wide, taking its baseball program from 11.7 to 25.

Why not the entire roster? I guess with NIL also in play, these guys have access to other sources of $, but if we cant fucking afford it, who can? Also I was surprised to see some of the current numbers

No scholarships for Cross Country? Are they just also considered part of the track squads and get scholarships that way?

I like the fact that we're already bringing in potential transfers, but it's idiotic that the portal is open before the season is over. Same as in other sports. Ncaa needs to change the dates. Some good players are gonna be late additions after their team is eliminated, and teams are going to have to make decisions not knowing what all players are going to be available.

Rodriguez had a great year that could have been much better.  The injury took away his power and his ability to switch hit.  I'm looking forward to him taking a huge step forward next year.  He could eventually be a 20 HR 20 SB guy in college.

Only problem is these things called semesters.  Stupid school.  It even gives out homework and junk.

Someone might have his L/R splits, but the hand injury forcing lefty only might have improved his average

Yep, I was thinking the same thing. He should have gone lefty only even before the injury.

Informative article from David Eckert, AAS. (excerpts)   Note the comment about Root of Arkansas.

Quote

Baseball America listed four Texas baseball players with eligibility remaining when it recently updated its list of the top 500 MLB draft prospects.

Outfielder Max Belyeu came in at No. 32. Catcher Rylan Galvan followed at No. 236, while shortstop Jalin Flores entered the list at No. 253. Pitcher Ruger Riojas rounded it out at No. 315.

It’s uncommon for players selected in the first 10 rounds of the MLB draft to choose not to sign with the organization that selects them — that’s happened just 11 times in the four drafts that have taken place since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The implementation of NIL compensation for college athletes might dissuade MLB organizations from picking certain college juniors, but statistics show it hasn’t made top college players less likely to sign once they’re picked.

Further down the draft, where Texas’ NIL funds might compete more effectively with the compensation offered by pro organizations, there might be some more interesting decisions to monitor.

Luke Harrison’s outstanding college season hasn’t rocketed him up draft boards. Would an MLB organization take a shot on Max Grubbs, who pitched to a 2.84 ERA out of the bullpen? What about Casey Borba, a draft-eligible sophomore who slugged his way to a .984 OPS that ranked third on the team?

Zach Root, MLB.com’s No. 43 overall draft prospect, leads the Razorbacks’ staff. The big left-hander holds a 3.78 ERA with 113 strikeouts in 85⅔ innings of work.

When he decided to transfer from East Carolina last summer, he considered Texas, even visiting campus.

“We were still putting the team together, and Arkansas is a real established team," Schlossnagle said May 1. "And so what happens with a lot of the big transfers, they want to know that they're going to be on a good team.

"Zach's a really good guy. Enjoyed meeting his family. I think he felt like Arkansas was returning a lot of really good players and we were building. And I understand that."

To translate: Root knew Arkansas was going to be good. With Schlossnagle rushing to put together a roster heading into his first season in charge of the Longhorns, it was reasonable to question whether Texas would play to a similar level.

Are you talking about summer semesters? Otherwise, there's no reason not to just push the portal dates back some and have it close before school starts again in August/September (depending on the school). As it stands, the current model only really helps some guys take a few credits during a summer session. Portals opening before the culmination of any sport season is just a stupid idea for many reasons.

Borba will be an interesting one to watch during the draft.

In a similar situation that Jared Southard was back in 2022 where he showed a lot of potential, averaging 14.1 K/9 his last year at Texas. Never really got an opportunity to start because of some command issues

I remember being excited about him potentially having a bigger role on the 2023 team and next thing you know the Angels take a shot on him in the 12th round and he is gone.

I don't think there is any chance he is drafted. Very little position versatility, isn't a plus third baseman and the hit tool is still somewhat of a question mark.

Southard also threw almost 30 innings in 2022 and teams are more willing to take flyers on pitchers than hitters. You can teach a guy who throws hard with good stuff how to pitch a lot easier than teaching a guy who is questionable hitter how to hit.

I was more talking about power.  He clearly couldn’t hit for power with the hand injury.

Don't blame root, I would of done the same. Spencer mirrored his fastball, but didnt have the offspeed command Root presented.

Expect Arod and Borba to breakout next year offensively. Borba needs to clean up his fielding, but should improve there.

Hell yes we need to load up with about 5-7 of these bats along with more pitchers.

So, like half a team?

I concur.

Schloss ain’t gonna wait around. Stack the roster early

He gave his all, but you have to do better than a .339 SLG if you're going to be a corner outfielder.

Props to him for working his way from walk on to starter, but he was a classic tweener. Probably wouldn’t be good enough to be a regular SEC starter but also brought some tools that could make him a solid 4th or 5th OF.

No 20 year old sees themselves that way though.

Look, if the pervs on this site can drool over the softball players (and one in particular who doesn’t even play), imma say Tommy was the best looking guy on the team. So I’m bummed lol

I am going to miss just having a guy named Tommy Farmer IV on the team.

Nik Sanders giving up his spot on the baseball team to go be a 6th string RB on the football team is something I'll never understand.

I see he played this spring at Grayson junior college and did well (.371 with 12 homers)

Sorry if it's been asked ad nauseam, but what exactly happened to Oliver Santos?  I can't find any record of him playing anywhere else.

I mean I started with "but those eyes" and decided for the good of the collective, he's gotta go.

Is Winfield a salvageable piece of the puzzle?  If so, would he rather be a 4th OF here or star at Lamar? I suppose that's the question?
