If he thinks he can significantly improve his draft slot by coming back then he would be looking at a much bigger signing bonus next year.

Actually, it's the opposite when you are going to be a senior. Seniors have zero draft leverage, so you often see them sign for pennies (the signing bonuses for seniors are like 5-10k). So you are basically weighing going back to school to collect a NIL paycheck and sign for pennies next year vs taking the six-figure signing bonus now.

July 2Jul 2 That returning core, with the transfers coming in and about 2-3 impact freshman arms will be one stout staff. Who are the 2-3 impact freshman arms?

He got pennies because he had no leverage. There is a reason guys that can sign do so as early as possible. That is the most leverage you will ever have.

I don’t think Flores was a late window guy. Rerick flipped from A&M to Texas, which makes his portal entry a bit surprising. But the unknown variables may be deciding factor. Volantis was the unique one that was more last minute. There are 11 pitchers signed/committed for next years team. 7 position players but that includes Jonah and 2 likely high draftees.

July 9Jul 9 Popular Post Since it did not embed Quote SCOOP: Some massive news for @TexasBaseball, as I’m told RHP Ruger Riojas, LHP Luke Harrison and RHP Max Grubbs will all opt out of the upcoming #MLBDraft and return to Austin for another season with the #Horns. Texas should be one of the title favorites in 2026. #HookEm #SEC

This seems to completely discount the possibility of having a stronger senior year and improving draft value. And, it's only truly leverage if you are willing to use it.

July 9Jul 9 This is outstanding news. The pitching staff should be elite next year. Outside of our SS being meh defensively, Schloss and Co. got everything they needed out of the offseason portal/retention. It is still insane that we replaced a Buster Posey finalist with another Buster Posey finalist from the same year. Edited July 9Jul 9 by Levi

Well just across the street, the Texas Softball team won the title with excellent pitching, elite hitting and average (to meh) defense. If the Stanford dude can hit and our pitching staff is elite, his defensive meh-ness won’t cause too many issues.
July 9Jul 9 This was LSU’s weakest hitting team in memory. Didn’t really matter. Reminded me of the 2005 Horns.
July 10Jul 10 Aiden Robbins is tearing it up in the cape. Smaller sample size, but a top 5 ops in the league.
July 11Jul 11 I was looking at the mock draft (1st round) from a scout on Twitter this morning. Who are our guys that are expected to go from the HS ranks? Cunningham and Fein? He had them like 15 and 16 overall. I lost the post or I’d link it. Also, Liam Doyle has absolute bust written all over him. This dude had the Angles taking him 2nd overall. “Yeah, that’s about right.” I thought.

Otherwise, Cozart has had an amazing summer, though it seems like he's destined for campus. However, I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up being drafted and went. There hasn't been much talk of that, so maybe he wants too big of a signing bonus for teams to really consider him. If this were 10 years ago, no chance he ends up in Austin. But, times sure have changed in regards to HS pitching prospects and the draft.

Cozart is up in the air, I would call it 60/40 on him not making it to campus. We are watching two portal guys Freeman and Moroknek as well
July 11Jul 11 A lot of the freshman class started moving in this week. Brett Crossland was among the group, which is notable because he has been getting some draft buzz. I'll take it as a good sign. Freeman and Moroknek are going to have to really want to sign because I don't see any team paying up for guys with their profiles. Both are already 22 (Freeman will be 23 in a few months) and have the competition level question mark, especially Freeman since he was previously at Auburn and did nothing.
