Headed there for a family thing. No idea if there are good places there. Any suggestions?

I used to travel there once a month.

This was in 2007-2013.

This is basically the only place I went to for dinner.  (Mainly because I walked to my hotel from there)

7/10 I’d say.

You probably should tell him what you had. The steak reviews are not good.

It’s not exactly a foodie scene in Corpus and especially Portland. Downtown Corpus I’d go with Republic of Texas or Water Street Oyster Bar

I’d definitely hit Corpus if that’s not an issue.

Water Street and Executive Surf Club for a beer after.  There’s usually live music there as well.

Water Street is solid.  Don't sleep on their grilled seafood platter, it's damned good.  House salad dressing is great, and you can buy a pint and bring it home.

Ah I forgot about that. Taqueria El Tapatio used to be great especially their breakfast tacos. It’s the only good food I ever found in Portland but I haven’t been in years.

Don't know if this post is too late for the OP, but here you go.

In the strip center where the Hardknocks sports bar is located, there is an Asian place that is pretty solid - Rice Hat.

Other than that, Portland is pretty much nothing other than the national chains.

Behind the Whataburger at 181 and Wildcat there is Yo Philly Cheesesteaks.  They used to be located in Corpus on North Beach but relocated to Portland.  Decent to solid cheesesteaks.

I've only been once so obviously not a large sample size but the seafood place next to the cheesesteak place is, if nothing else, an option that is not a chain.  LeStourgeon Seafood Company.

Haven't been in a while but if you want a standard TexMex place then La Iguana on 5th Avenue and Moore Avenue is probably your best option.  There or the Taqueria Guadalajara.

You now have the option of stopping in at the knock-off Buc-ee's at 181 and Buddy Ganem and getting a burrito or a chopped beef sandwich.  There is a Bill Miller's on the other side of 181 is that is your thing.
