I went yesterday to an asian ayce. Straight up noped past the oysters and beelined for the sashimi.  Ma La chili hotpot had the same effect though.

I arrived in kennebunkport a couple hours ago and had my first lobster roll. The irish pub across the street is slamming and the band is going hard.

Will update over the next week as the oysters are ordered.

You should order lobster.  It is so choice.  If you have the means, I highly recommend picking some up.

Red’s is in wiscasset. We’re headed through there on tues. Our plan is for me to wait in line for red’s while the wife looks through the bookstore. That’s her thing.

Our first trip to Maine since moving to NY was to Boothbay Harbor and Red’s was enroute there.  IIRC, I got the lobster roll and a basket of clam strips enjoyed them both. If it weren’t for the gd in Dallas I’d be tempted to retire on Maine coast.

We’re headed to Camden tomorrow. I’ve compiled my lobster roll ranking list for portland and kennebunkport and ogunquit area.

1. Clam Shack - kennebunkport. Lobster was exceptionally sweet. Incredible flavor. No pics on this on one.

2. Nubb’s lobster shack - I thought this was a shack in a cove when driving there but it was at a resort. View of the Atlantic was gorgeous.

IMG_4045.thumb.jpeg.bff844e5d0f25a07867a9cda2fcfec2a.jpeg

3. Eventide - portland - different style than others. They used spices to enhance the flavor. The bread was the best of the competitors.

IMG_4021.thumb.jpeg.9652f497f114010188bfab705d0db7b6.jpeg

4. Mabel’s Lobster Claw - kennebunkport- no flavor, disappointing. Do not recommend.

We had oysters at Eventide. The server selected some damriscotta other varieties.

Damriscotta oysters are farmed in the river so they are less salty than their counterparts. You can definitely taste the difference. From the list above, blackstone starts on the top and selections work their way down the list.

We had sushi at Rosella in kennebunkport. The tuna on the first pic on the far right was spectacular.

I am not a coffee drinker. However, the wife is very much a coffee snob. She prefers pour-over light roast costa rican beans. That’s her game at home.

My pre-game research shows whistling whale coffee bar has workshops and pour-over coffee. That was what I identified as a likely candidate for suitable coffee for her. Have you tried whistling whale?

Haven’t but I’d go there over the Owl & Turtle specifically for coffee after looking up Whistling Whale…Owl & Turtle is a charming old school style bookshop that happens to have good coffee as well…enjoy!

Was there last year and around seventh in line arriving 45 minutes before it opened. By the time it opened, the wait was nearly two hours for the back of the line. $36 lobster roll with a very impressive amount of lobster. Not weighed out in any way, staff just grabs a bunch of lobster and stuffs it in the roll.  Fried clams were outstanding.

I did the Whole Foods Friday Oyster Deal last week as mentioned above.

I got four of the three east coast examples shown. My favorite were the Chebooktooks.

After finishing the first dozen, (I had to buy cocktail sauce snd a lemon - taking my own next time), I grabbed a hand basket to go a little shopping and as I wandered back by the seafood area, I see they’re stocking the Moondancers that were missing my first time around do I ordered four of those as well. They were my least favorite, very very salty.

Anyway, thanks again for heads up on these  I’ll definitely be doing that again.

Sweetwater Oyster Bar in Cedar Park has an 11-6 happy hour Mon -Sat, with $1 gulf oysters and $3 east coast oysters.  Limit is 1 dozen per person on the gulf oysters.

Revised lobster roll list: Red’s is at the top. At least 3x the amount of lobster and it was very flavorful without any seasoning.

Just checked into The inn at ocean’s edge in lincolnville. The view. All I hear is the ocean in front of me, the infinity pool waterfall behind me, and the breeze in the trees. 69 degrees. Perfection.

When you posted pictures of the other rolls, I thought "it's going to be night and day for him when he gets to Red's" because it was for me. I like lobster, but it's not something I order often at all because its usually just "okay that was good" category for me. Completely different experience at Red's, which is probably a lot to do with freshness. Just simple deliciousness without even dipping in the butter.

The lobster rolls at McLoons lobster shack are supposed to be among the best in maine. We’ll likely have those for lunch tomorrow. I’m interested to see how they measure up to red’s.

revised lobster roll rankings

1. Red’s - great flavor, ridiculous amount of lobster, pretty nice setting, location is very convenient as it’s right on Hwy 1, wait time is very long, best value

2. mcloon’s - best flavor of all the options, a good amount of lobster for the price, location is out of the way, best setting as it’s on an island where the lobstermen bring them ashore, wait time is minimal. They do offer a rolls royce version of their lobster roll for $55 with twice the amount of lobster. (as opposed to $30 for the regular size - all the places were around $30 for a lobster roll).

3. Clam Shack - kennebunkport. Flavor is excellent. Most expensive. Great setting in kennebunkport, location is convenient if you’re visiting kennebunkport, wait time is minimal

4. Nubb’s lobster shack - cape neddick - flavor is good, great setting - view of the Atlantic was gorgeous, location is out of the way unless you’re in ogunquit, wait time is minimal

5. Eventide - portland - flavor is great but it’s partly due to seasoning rather than pure flavor of the lobster, wait time is long, setting is just a street in portland, reasonably convenient location if you’re in portland - it’s several blocks from the old port, less expensive than other options but there’s less lobster than the others

6. mabel’s lobster claw - no flavor, wait time is  longer than it should be, setting is fine, pass on this one

I’ve seen McLoon’s mentioned in a few shows on FN and wanting to hit it up. The Lobster Shack at Two Lights remains my favorite. The food is good and the setting there is gorgeous imo

GenX out there LIVIN. Nice stuff.

Thanks. We did a lot of driving and hit up some very cool coastal towns. Bar Harbor and Acadia, Camden, Rockport, Rockland, Cape Neddick, Damariscotta, Wiscasset, Bath, Brunswick, Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit.

My wife loves bookstores and Maine has a lot of them.

We also did a sailing excursion in Camden during the Camden Cup Classic (regatta). There wasn’t any wind that day so the regatta was eventually called off. But we enjoyed “sailing” down to Rockport and back.

Is this where we’re doing New England shellfish?

At Bob’s Clam Hut in Kittery this afternoon. Wife got shrimp and scallops, I got scallops and whole belly clams.

e1b2e01cf3ecd83b565d36d20ccc955f.jpg

Was damned good. But yesterday, on a rainy Boston day, we just went to Legal Seafoods, and the whole belly clams were better there. So, there ya have it.

Waiting outside Eventide right now. Oysters are on the agenda.

I'm sorry, but that's just ridiculous when you have Sprague's across the street and Jolie Rogers around the corner.

Eventide. Started with a dozen for me, chowder for the wife. Then rolls.

Then…a half dozen more for dessert. The Pemaquids may be the best oyster I’ve ever had.

And that pink side with them? Kimchi ice. It’s like a snowball…but salty and spicy as hell. It may be the best oyster condiment I’ve ever had as well.

And where do Pemaquids come from? Damriscotta river. I’m telling ya. That’s the place.

I really like Clark's.  I go there probably once a month with Mrs.LL.  They don't reserve spots on the bar on the patio.  So you can just show up and get a seat on a Friday afternoon, order a martini, watch the people along West 6th, and slurp down some damned good oysters (and a very good lobster roll).
