The coastal towns do christmas up big. There’s skiing to pass the time in the winter. There’s a ski mountain in Camden and a couple of larger ones more inland.
August 2Aug 2 Yesterday morning, wife wanted her breakfast sandwich. I made a different choice. Went into a garage where you can buy Bar Harbor Blondes on the honor system. Borrowed an oyster knife from the folks running our cottages. Sat down and shucked a dozen for breakfast. They’re as good as the Damariscotta River ones.DEAD. SEXY.
August 2Aug 2 And, we stopped for a snack at the Shuck Station in Damariscotta.Glad they had something for my non-oyster-fan wife: scallop ceviche, which was crazy good:And my order:Jesus. Tapdancing. Christ.Blackstones: the most balanced of the briny oysters. Kind of a three-way tie with the Bar Harbor Blondes and the Pemaquids.Norumbegas: the boldest of the briny ones.John’s River: the most balanced, briny start, sweet finish.Heron Island: outstanding…but 4th place on this plate.I may order a couple more Johns River and Blackstones, because life is for living.Maine oysters are the best I’ve ever had, fellas. And I’ve eaten a LOT of oysters.
August 2Aug 2 I’m serious, guys. The Divine can be found in many places. One of those places is in the Damariscotta River, where they raise what I’ve discovered to be the finest oysters in the world. If you love oysters and visit Maine, spend some time here. They even offer an oyster tour of the river, which I would take if we were here for the day.And the Blackstones and John’s Rivers I ordered for dessert.
August 7Aug 7 Just picked up a couple dozen royal miyagis from my fish monger. Never had them before. Will report back.

August 9Aug 9 For sure. My favorite, Mookie Blues, are from the Damariscotta River. Will add them to my list. Loved the Pemaquids, Blackstones, and Norumbegas. But am definitely open to trying em all.

August 10Aug 10 Wellfleets tonight at my favorite restaurant in the Boston area, Scutra (Arlington if you want to look it up).
August 14Aug 14 Hammered a dozen sinkus for a snack. They weren't bad. They are a little small....shooter size. Didn't need anything other than a squeeze of lemon. Nice brine. Syrprisingly sweet finish. But they are a bitch to shuck. Shell is fragile and kind of makes a mess. But i wouldn't kick them out of bed.
August 29Aug 29 I needed another half-dozen Pemaquods for dessert. This is the way. Seriously, it’s a tough battle with the Norumbegas, but you chose well.
August 29Aug 29 Ok—for those of you looking for a recommendation in Portland, the Hampton Inn is a short walk up the back stairs to Evantide. It might as well be the hotel bar. And for the next four days, that’s where l’ll be hanging out from about 9:00 to midnight.

September 19Sep 19 Just had a sack of 100 Pemaquid's from Fulton seafood co dropped off on my front porch. Neighbor brought them inside to keep them cool. They'll go into the fridge, then will eat them with friends pre-game before the Austin FC match on Sunday.

Or are they still $3 a pop, due to shipping? CHIEF

September 19Sep 19 Used to get a couple boat bags for the Superbowl and spend the afternoon shucking and grilling. 2 for the grill, one for the shucker.
September 22Sep 22 In process, and the results. Ordered 100 Pemaquids for 4 of us. One dude popped up with Covid, so it was up to the three of us. We polished off 95. Leaves 5 for me to have with dinner tomorrow. They remain the king of oysters to me.

September 25Sep 25 After spending a week in the Pacific Northwest and a few days in Vancouver I much prefer east coast oysters over west coast. West coast taste buttery to me and I don't like the texture.
