I’ll be there in Houston. First protest of my life, AFAIK. PM me if you’re going, first beer afterwards is on me, assuming we’re not on a plane to El Salvador.

Same here, if you're a Surl and will be in Austin for it I gotcha beer fam.

Friend who is a recovering Republican like myself is concerned about danger at the protest. I've been to only one protest before. We had street tacos, free water in bottles, some music and dancing. Yeah, it really gets your hackles up.

I know y'all are smart mother fuckers, so I will probably catch a lot of shit for posting this, but I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Since there is a good chance there will be MAGA types infiltratiing the crowd and trying to instigate shit, just sit down where you are, probably on your hands is best.

Also remember streets are not sidewalks, except in cross walk situations.

either go in group of three, or find one to join in once you get there.  exchange emergency contact info with the other two in case you get picked up.  Large groups have more trouble keeping up with each other.

If you can afford a burner phone, that's a lot better play than taking your regular one.

If you still have an old digital camera, consider using that to record pics and vids with.  Use SD cards for storage.

Know the route if it's a march, or the boundaries of the public space that the permit was written for, and when the event is scheduled to end.  Once that time is reached start looking for a way out to your car or a rendezvous point.  Don't get taken in by any last moment swells of enthusiasm to go beyond the permitted time.  There should be organizer reps who have this event info, probably wearing something that identifies them, like traffic vests.

Here's a good list from AI:

Attending a No Kings protest in Texas (or any protest challenging authoritarianism or government overreach) requires a blend of preparedness, caution, and strategy — especially in a state where law enforcement and counterprotesters may be more aggressive. Here’s a smart, safety-first guide:

What to Do Before the Protest

  1. Know the Law

    • Texas allows peaceful protest on public property (sidewalks, parks).

    • You can film police — from a safe distance — and they cannot demand you delete footage.

    • Be aware of anti-mask laws (e.g., in Austin, face coverings might draw attention).

  2. Tell Someone

    • Let a trusted friend or family member know your plans, location, and expected return time.

    • Share your emergency contact info.

  3. Write Down Key Info

    • On your arm or in your pocket: lawyer’s number, bail fund, emergency contact.

    • Your phone might get taken or shut off.

🎒 What to Bring

Item Why It Matters
Water bottle Stay hydrated, esp. in Texas heat.
Snacks / protein bar Long days, few breaks.
Goggles / swim glasses Tear gas protection (if needed).
Bandana or mask To reduce ID risk, dust, gas — but check local laws.
ID (optional) Up to you — carrying may help in arrest, but also makes you easier to ID.
Cash In case cards/phones don’t work or are confiscated.
Mini first aid kit Blisters, minor cuts, pepper spray recovery.
Portable charger Keep your phone alive.
Notepad & pen Record badge numbers or events if phones are off.
Earplugs Sirens, LRADs (less likely, but good to have).

👕 What to Wear

Wear Avoid
Comfortable dark clothing Logos, political branding (can make you a target)
Sturdy, closed-toe shoes Sandals, flip-flops
Layers, if weather shifts Jewelry, loose straps
Hat + sunscreen Anything ID’ing your group or location (unless strategic)

Tip: Dress to blend in, not stand out. Dark neutral colors help with anonymity if needed.

⚠️ Precautions & Protest Etiquette

  1. Stick with a buddy or group

    • Use the "3-person rule" — don’t go alone, and make a communication plan.

  2. Document safely

    • Film police and abuse, but not other protestors’ faces unless they consent.

  3. Keep moving

    • Standing in one place too long can lead to kettling or being boxed in.

  4. Don’t engage with counterprotesters

    • Walk away. De-escalation is better than argument — they may be baiting you.

  5. Know the exit routes

    • Before things get tense, have a few escape routes planned.

  6. Stay sober and aware

    • Being under the influence makes you vulnerable — stay sharp.

🚨 If Arrested

  • Do not resist, even if unlawful.

  • Ask: “Am I being detained?” If not, walk away.

  • Say: “I want to remain silent. I want a lawyer.”

  • Don’t sign anything or explain without representation.

🛡️ Extra Smart Tips

  • Turn off Face/Touch ID on your phone (use a passcode instead).

  • Disable location tracking and Bluetooth before arriving.

  • Use encrypted messaging (e.g., Signal) for planning and check-ins.

  • Download offline maps of the area.

I am so enthused to see so many here standing up to throw down.  There are going to be more battles after this, so please be safe!

I'll be at the one in Denton, all things go as planned.  Here's a link to find one near you.

As someone going to the Maui one, I find this map offensive

Somewhere in some ivory tower, a grad student hunting for a thesis will realize the harm this does to your self-esteem and makes you lose your filling of includedness. The paper will be published. Former grad students working in HR at different organizations will take part in standing up for those cruelly not represented on representational maps.

People who never complained or gave it a thought will be saved.

I hate this shit.

Wife and I will be going for the first part of the protest at least.  Fundamentally, we can't stand by and not make our voices heard.  Yes, we're doing plenty of other things and have been, but it's important that the nation sees people "just like them" out there saying that this is not normal, and it is not acceptable.

WE are the real patriots.

Anyone know if those state garages off San Jacinto and Trinity will be available for parking on Saturday?

I can't really go to rallies and protest. Maybe I'll put up a No Kings banner on the fence facing the ranch road. That will surely end my beloveds acquired friendships here in Johnson City. I don't talk to anyone but you guys and the beloved, so I'll be fine.

Truly, compliments to you who will participate. Lifting the opposition to the anti-republic movement from talk to demonstration is excellent.

Maybe the fascists will win, but you will sleep at night knowing you didn't tamely submit.

Climate's probably gonna kill most of us anyway.

This could have gone in multiple threads.  Might as well put it here.  Be careful out there folks.  Florida and Texas seem to compete in the cruelty race.

'You don't have to sit there and just be a sitting duck.'

Pedestrian right of way only goes so far in the “Free State of Florida.”

Particularly when the non-drivers are obstructing traffic.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is extending “stand your ground” to the roadway, saying that if people feel threatened by protesters while driving, they have the right to run them over to get to safety via what he calls a “zero-tolerance policy.”

“And we also have a policy that if you’re driving on one of those streets and a mob comes and surrounds your vehicle and threatens you, you have a right to flee for your safety. And so if you drive off and you hit one of these people, that’s their fault for impinging on you. You don’t have to sit there and just be a sitting duck and let the mob grab you out of your car and drag you through the streets. You have a right to defend yourself in Florida,” DeSantis told friendly interviewer Dave Rubin on Wednesday.

As has been the case all week, DeSantis weighed in on the riots in Los Angeles, explaining in great detail why Florida will not tolerate civil disobedience, such as that seen in California, including during protests expected this weekend.

“They’re supposedly going to do demonstrations all over the country, so we’ll see what they do in Florida. We already have our state resources on alert. They will be deployed as needed,” DeSantis said.

“People can always choose to do the wrong thing, even in Florida. The difference is in Florida, you ain’t just getting a slap on the wrist like they do in Portland, and you go right back on the street. You’re going to end up in the inside of a jail cell, and you will be held accountable. So we will do everything within our authority to bring people to justice.”

Gotta admit, anxiety is creeping up as Saturday gets closer. Seeing social media posts about the brownshirts showing up to protests. But I’m not letting these motherfucking fascist fucks take over my country without a fight

My mother (73 years of age) emailed me from her yahoo email account to let me know she would be at the Harlingen No Kings Day protest. It's being organized by an area Democratic group so they notified police, and have a general rule of USA flags only, thus I'm sure it will be a lot more tame than the rest of the state. But I'm glad she still has the gumption to stand in the heat for a couple hours for her country. Let's see how much tear gas Austin gets poured on it in comparison.

During my time at UT I went downtown to ridicule a Nazi rally. Maybe four dozen people showed up to moon the Klan. So, this will be my second public protest.

Exactly why they become cops. It's all under the guise of our good guy bad guy mythology. They're the good guys protecting us all. What a load.

I bought into this mythology and all the other ones myself for such a long time. It's a weighty advantage for the fascists.

I can't believe my position is now considered radical by the right.
