June 16Jun 16 I usually dislike it when the feds bring overlapping, concurrent charges with a state. Other than glory-seeking, or maybe putting the death penalty on the table, I'm not sure why the feds are pursuing this. The firearm law that it falls under, 18 USC 924, is one of the most draconian and probably worst federal criminal laws on the books.

Man, surely you know by now that much of federal criminal law arose in response to a refusal by many states to prosecute crimes committed by certain types of people against certain "lesser" types of people.

Some of it sure. A lot of it is just political "tough on crime" shit. Congress can't do anything useful, so they pass a crime bill.

Even the most gung-ho MAGAt US Attorney might flinch a little at an entire prosecution for the purpose of giving Trump an opportunity to pardon. And federal prosecution, in most cases, does not preclude state. So it's all a giant waste of time.
June 17Jun 17 And money. Doge will be by directly to put the kibosh on the redundant federal charges.
June 17Jun 17 We now know why the feds co-opted the state charge and brought the death penalty into play: the perp also shot and killed the dog. https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/melissa-mark-hortman-service-dog-training/ Quote Gilbert never graduated from training school, but went on to be a beloved pet of the Hortman family. Melissa and Mark Hortman and Gilbert were shot and killed on Saturday.

June 17Jun 17 It would appear the shooter was able to simply buy personal information on his victims from public and legal markets, whoopsie poopsie! https://www.wired.com/story/minnesota-lawmaker-shootings-people-search-data-brokers/ It's an issue I've talked about repeatedly here on surly, and the usual suspects typically just come back with "bhhhhuuuuut it's OBAMACARE for the internet!!!" but goddamnit data privacy matters! It's absurd and literally leading to deaths now, the degree to which our personal information is financialized by private interests at the expense of our peace of mind, or even peace of body.
June 17Jun 17 I know some aspects of this concept are abhorrent to most Americans, including myself, but I don't see a way out of fixing "the internet" and social media, without directly dying everything we do on the internet to a valid SSN/DL. Want to be an evil motherfucking commenting in the comment sections of youtube and reddit? Ok. No anonymity. Buying public data on people? Flag that shit and send a notice to the people who's info got sold, since obviously personal privacy doesn't exist anymore. Uncomfortable with your sexuality because you're a repressed homosexual or like being pegged? Fuck it, your porn history is out there for everyone to see. You'll either let your freak flag fly, or you're going to have to repress that shit more and jerk off without the internet like we all grew up doing. Bring back personal accountability and shame. Anonymity clearly doesn't work.
