June 16Jun 16 Thought it was going to be about the Netflix documentary on David Gilmour, but now I have my doubts about it being real, as there are like 5 different names for it floating around.
June 16Jun 16 Walk Hard and Weird completely ruined the genre for me. I can’t even watch a trailer for a musical biopic without laughing.
June 16Jun 16 Becoming Led Zeppelin just came out on Netflix. 2h. Like it a lot but it stops right after the second album, hence the "Becoming..." Could make another two hours easy.

June 16Jun 16 I love these two -- but then again, I'm a sucker for British new wave music starting in the late 70's
June 16Jun 16 The Buddy Holly Story. busey nails it. walk the Line. Great coal Miners Daughter. Fucking greatness. Honeysuckle Rose. Not really a biopic but it was really Willie playing himself. Captured a lot of the magic of that era in Texas. Hank Cochran and Jeannie Sealy singing “make the world go away” a masterpiece, with Johnny Gimbel in fiddle. Bird. whats Love Got to Do with it? Sid and Nancy Edited June 16Jun 16 by Texzilla58
June 16Jun 16 Levon WAS Loretty’s papa in Coal Miner’s Daughter. “Don’t do it, Loretty. Don’t thow yore young laff aweigh. Girl, you’re my shinin pradd. Stay in Butcher Holler.” I had no idea that was Levon Helm until I read it somewhere. Made me feel like a fool! I thought they rounded up a coon hunter from fown the holler somewhere. He was so beautifully authentic.

His hillbilly accent eas real as it gets, buddy. I think Levon was from Arkansas somewhar. As fine and soulful a drummer and sanger as they ever was. He was born to be in the Band.

Could make another two hours easy. Becoming Led Zeppelin was primo. In August of 1969 I began college life with a 4-ft long Led Zeppelin “misplaced” by an Alabama record store hanging from my dorm room ceiling at the Institute on South Main. It held its air all year, a quality item, Clark. A gift from a comely female companion (no pics). LZII, Abbey Road and The Band were all released that fall. Ahh, yes, Stimpy, those were the days. Gimme a hit, dude, side 2’s next. Tuyn it up.

Sid and Nancy So, I've posted elsewhere that we occasionally go to the Elk's lodge. On Tuesdays, the main lodge is closed but the patio bar and kitchen are open. The kitchen just serves one item on Tuesdays so it's "Philly cheesesteak night" or "Bacon Burger night" or whatever. They always have a band playing on those nights. So, we go there and the band is playing. Guitar, bass, drums, and keys. They do Creedence songs, a few Beatles, etc. After a while, this older blonde comes and joins them. She's a solid singer, and show no signs of stage fright at all. She's long in the tooth but it's obvious that she's experienced. Anyway, the band takes a break. The woman is near us looking at her phone. She puts her phone down and the GF (she's a chatty one) says hello to the woman and compliments her voice. The woman tells the GF that she's been singing for decades, blah blah blah and then reveals that not only was she an "Ike-ette" but she was married to Ike Turner. Turner lived near here (in San Marcos CA) when he died (of a cocaine overdose and numerous health problems). Then, the woman gets wacky and starts saying crazy shit about Ike being murdered, etc. Fortunately, the band starts back up so the conversation ends. GF says to me "do you believe that she was really married to him?" as I'm googling her. GF is still talking "she must have been his second wife after Tina"...as I learn that she was wife #13 of 14.
June 17Jun 17 Popular Post Clearly there's an unwritten disclaimer that this thread is about the 2nd greatest music biopic ever, because this one is obviously in a class by itself Spoiler

June 17Jun 17 Amadeus - great movie that sparked a curiosity in Mozart and other classical music Ray - good biopic, already loved his music but learned some background The Commitments - really good movie about a fictional Irish R&B band ---------------------- Levon Helm was also great in The Right Stuff, as the narrator at beginning and end of the movie and as Chuck Yeager's sidekick Ridley
June 17Jun 17 BTW, Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo both did their own singing in Coal Miner's Daughter, but the professional singer in the cast didn't sing at all. He did record "Blue Moon of Kentucky" for the movie's soundtrack, but they didn't use it in the movie.

A parody of a documentary. Walk Hard is a parody of a biopic. It's like lumping "Becoming Led Zeppelin" and "Walk the Line" into the same category.

June 17Jun 17 8 Mile Probably as close to a biopic you can get without being completely biographical - so not a biopic. Therefore, cannot be the greatest biopic ever made. However, we are to the point in a surly thread that the original thread title and idea turns into name something not already named. Straight Outta Compton - is a biopic, but not the greatest ever made. La Bamba - is a pretty great biopic.
June 17Jun 17 I actually watched Walk the Line after I had already seen Walk Hard. I highly recommend doing it in this order, as it makes both movies funnier.

June 17Jun 17 Bohemian Rhapsody was absolute dogshit and it needs to be said every time it’s mentioned.

June 17Jun 17 24 Hour Party People feels like the correct answer. Almost Famous better than any biopic about a real band. Regular biopics just seem doomed to failure - just too hard to capture the music, which is only famous because it reached far outside of the human who created it.

June 18Jun 18 Tag this thread to revisit in late October when Deliver Me From Nowhere is released. Jeremy Allen White as Bruce during the recording of Nebraska has potential to not suck. Or suck shitballs.

June 18Jun 18 You know, I don't remember much about it, but I thought David Chase's Not Fade Away (2012) (another fake biopic) was pretty good. I always thought this garage/basement scene captured four guys trying to play a song pretty precisely. Especially the bass. Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, reports that 69% of 89 surveyed critics gave the film a positive review; the average rating is 6.50/10. The site's consensus reads, "Exuberant and bittersweet, Not Fade Away is a coming-of-age story set to a British Invasion beat that occasionally meanders but mostly charms."[3] Keith Uhlich of Time Out New York named Not Fade Away the second-best film of 2012, citing it as proof that Chase's work on The Sopranos was "no fluke".[4] In 2020, Uhlich named it the eighth-best film of the 2010s.[5]
