July 13Jul 13 I still have a sour taste in my mouth over the KD Saga, it'll linger if Houston makes a deep run. How in the fuck did the Spurs botch that trade with as little as the Rockets traded to acquire him? The Spurs desperately needed shooting and could've acquired one of the most reliable and explosive shooters in the NBA (Even at the age of 36) without surrendering many of their valuable assets. Is Kelly Olynyk really gonna move the needle? Far as I can tell was the most beneficial part of that trade will be clearing up the logjam at Guard. I'm not gonna say KD would've instantly turned the Spurs into title contenders, but fuck at least they'd be capable of reaching the playoffs and winning a series at the worst. July 15Jul 15 I usually watch SL every year, just to see our new draft picks and gauge where they are. It's usually lots of slop. I never really think much of 99% of the players. Am I crazy, or do Jones-Garcia, Minix, CB, and Harper all look like they can play in this league? I usually do not get this high on SL players. Also, Filipowski looks like he can play too. Dude is kinda nice. Edited July 15Jul 15 by Pam Cummings

Hustle, effort and having a knack for being at the right place at the right time translates. Athleticism only translates if you don’t have it. In other words, there are some great athletes at summer league who can’t play in the league. Shooting doesn’t necessarily translate. The looks you get in summer league are so much better than the real league. That said, Harper, Bryant and I’m pretty sure Jones-Garcia can play in the league. I’m not as sold on Minix but he’s at least worth keeping around on a two way. Filipowski knocking down threes like that… yeah for his size if he’s really that accurate there’s definitely a NBA future for him. There’s no way to judge where he is defensively though against that competition. Nor is there any way to judge how effective he can be down low on offense but a stretch five like that for sure has decent career ahead of him if he can play close to league average defense. Also, that was one of the most fun summer league games I can remember. Entertaining as hell.

I think part of what gives me hope for those guys is the Jazz were playing a few guys(like Flip) who were getting minutes in the NBA last year. So it was against some reasonable competition. Although that might just be a terrible sign for Utah that they are 0-3 in SL playing guys that will be on their actual roster. With Minix he hit the GW but I just like his size. He might be a little slow footed though against good NBA players. Either way, yeah, fun game. Don't recall seeing too many games go to OT in the SL.

Also, that was one of the most fun summer league games I can remember. Entertaining as hell. Shooting matters if you can't do it.... As you stated, you get pretty open looks in summer league unless you're creating bad shots (which a lot of guards and wings do by forcing it). Jones-Garcia can play in the league..... maybe as nothing more than a Patty Mills or Jaren Jackson off the bench, but his defense does need to get better. Harper has to find a jump shot, but his ability to penetrate will carry him next year like Castle. Gotta get much better shooting in the first 3-4 years. It either happens or it won't usually. Bryant has a ton of work to do. He's 3-24 on FGs in Vegas. 1-12 from 3. In today's NBA, you have to be able to hit 3's if you have almost no offensive game and rely on defense. Who's the last guy who was OTB defense only? Tony Allen? That was almost 10 years ago since his prime. I'm with you on Minix but he does understand the game, has good instincts, but he's a rotten athlete and will he shoot well enough to ever make any impact, because that's his ticket. 8-16 from 3 in Vegas and he's rebounded pretty well too, but he doesn't do much with the ball.... just needs to be able to knock down open looks. Not a great passer.... as a wing, not a great look. rest of the team are jags...
July 20Jul 20 And for those who were vexed with Wesley being traded away, here's your 2nd chance!!! Wizards, a team devoid of good players, didn't even give him a real look. Interesting. Gotta be able to shoot these days.

I like it that Fox is on a little bit of a different timeline than the rest of the team. This is the time to give a vet big money while you have Wemby and Castle and Harper on rookie deals. Next contract for Fox is going to be a different deal. If he’s still around, that is.

If Mitch and Wright are convinced it can work, then I'm going to let Mitch try to figure it out. Castle played 26 mpg last year. I think we can find Harper 24-26 mpg too.

The issue is when you want to get into 2nd contracts with Wemby and Castle. We may need to find a buyer for Fox in 3 years, which is fine..... as long as you can find a buyer and get something credible back.

Also, I expect Fox's stats to drop on the Spurs (hope ast % increases), they did last year and with less minutes, he needs to become a more efficient and effective player. He has 4 years to sort of master this. He could start with becoming a better 3 point shooter. He should get great looks. Fills out the roster.....
August 6Aug 6 Harper probably gets paid. If Bryant has to be paid too that's a good problem to have, but it will suck to have to choose.
August 7Aug 7 I'd like to see Bryant play an NBA game before I worry about his hypothetical rookie extension.

August 14Aug 14 Author Spoiler A 24-year-old San Antonio man was arrested after allegedly making an online threat to kill Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones for seeking to slow down approval of Project Marvel, the city's planned multibillion-dollar sports and entertainment district. Marcos Rene Olvera was arrested on Tuesday at his home on the Northeast Side after posting on X, "We need to kill the mayor," according to the San Antonio Police Department. Olvera was charged with obstruction or retaliation, a third-degree felony defined in the Texas Penal Code as threatening a public servant, a witness or a prospective witness. Advertisement Article continues below this ad He was booked into the Bexar County Jail early Wednesday and later posted $125,000 bond, records show. He was awaiting release Wednesday afternoon. "I hope this doesn't happen to anybody in our community, but I'm thankful that this individual has been arrested and that they'll go through the judicial process," Jones told the San Antonio Express-News. "If you're a woman of color, you experience more of this online harassment and these kinds of these kinds of threats," she added. "It's just a reality. It's unfortunate." Jones said she had asked Police Chief Willian McManus and City Manager Erik Walsh "to ensure that we have sufficient surveillance not only for myself but for all the council members, so that those kinds of threats can be immediately identified. "We all need to, of course, do our part to engage in civil discussion, but we also need to make sure our own capabilities are appropriate and the protection is appropriate for everybody serving," she said. Participants were discussing Jones' stated desire to pause the city council's consideration of Project Marvel for further study of the costs and benefits. The centerpiece of the project would be a new Spurs arena estimated to cost as much as $1.5 billion. The arena would be funded with state, county and local tax dollars and a $500 million contribution from the Spurs. Authorities became aware of the threat after an X user posted a screenshot of the chat, accompanied by the comment, "People are threatening to kill San Antonio Mayor ... over this. Everyone needs to take a strategic pause." According to a police affidavit, one of the comments visible in the screenshot was: "They gonna end up moving to Las Vegas. I'm so sick of this ... city." Advertisement Article continues below this ad In the next comment in the thread, Olvera posted, "We need to kill the mayor," the affidavit says. Other users admonished Olvera for going over the line. Jones said police were alerted to the threat by CPS Energy, the city-owned utility. The mayor is an ex-officio member of the CPS board. "They've got capability that surveils social media for threats like that, and that's how it was caught," Jones told the Express-News. The Southwest Texas Fusion Center, an interagency intelligence-gathering hub managed by SAPD, began investigating. Police reached out to X and obtained the phone number and email associated with Olvera's account. Investigators contacted Olvera's mother, who confirmed the phone number was his, the affidavit states. Advertisement Article continues below this ad Police then sought a warrant for Olvera's arrest, saying they had probable cause to believe he had threatened Jones "in retaliation for her decision in advocating a pause on Project Marvel," court records show. A magistrate judge issued the arrest warrant, and Olvera was taken into custody around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Puro San Antonio. I do think it's a bit weird that they actually got the mayor to comment on a death threat, though. And then she immediately went to the race card. I don't think she quite has this PR thing down yet. /no cloak room
August 14Aug 14 Yeah I'm not sure what point she is trying to make. Unless I'm missing something a Hispanic man made a threat against a Hispanic woman in an overwhelmingly Hispanic city. And there doesn't appear to be a lot of "color" between the two of them. I'm sure he was still just upset about the Fox extension.
