June 21Jun 21 So, I bought some B&B the other day and noticed that they don't sell Oak lump anymore. They sell hardwood w/ some oak. Hardwood can be a lot of things. When did this bullshit start? Is this similar to buying pellets for Traeger and seeing smoke flavor?
June 21Jun 21 B&B was acquired by Duraflame in 2021. That might be the answer. But HEB to the rescue. I’ve used the Mesquite version and it burns nicely https://www.heb.com/product-detail/central-market-oak-lump-charcoal/1633408
June 22Jun 22 I noticed that this winter when I bbqed chicken for a party. The enshittening continues.
June 22Jun 22 Those that BGE or ceramic probably have seen the naked whiz (a poster) before, but his website is pretty cool and has a nice database of lump reviews. Some may be out of date but worth a shot. I typically end up with the cowboy stuff at lowes. https://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpindexpage.htm?bag
June 23Jun 23 I love their briquets for simple grilling. Cheaper and burns way better than all the rest. Been harder and harder to find though. I usually only find it in Academy of all places.
July 2Jul 2 I have been using H‑E‑B Mesquite Charcoal for years. I usually add some wood chips for smoke. Works great.
July 2Jul 2 I've been getting the Kamado Joe lump at Lowe's for a few years now. I used to get Cowboy but every bag started having metal and rocks in it.
July 2Jul 2 This is the best I have ever used. And there is not even a close second. You can get it delivered through some Ace Tru-Value stores. It has full branches so big that you may have to bust out the hatchet. Great for the smoker and the grill. https://www.wickedgoodcharcoal.com/

I regularly get the Kamado Joe Big Block lump charcoal. Its great for smoking, but I usually like smaller pieces for direct heat. I opened a bag of B&B yesterday to put in the chimney for a direct heat fajita cook and so much of it was tiny pieces - reminding me while I like the Big Block.
July 4Jul 4 Kamado Joe Big Block is one coal I will not use. They've repeatedly had quality issues over the years where a batch will be undercured, and then will leave heavy chemical taste in your meat. Meat costs too much to risk that.
July 4Jul 4 If you want the Gucci stuff buy some Binchotan charcoal from the internet. It's made of Japanese oak and burns cleaner, longer, and hotter. They use it in places like Izakayas. Remember, it's only Binchotan if it comes from the Wakayame region of Japan. Otherwise it's just sparkling Kingsford. Edited July 4Jul 4 by 52-80
