Mirtle at The Athletic

Utah, meanwhile, had acres of cap space – more than $18 million, fifth most in the league before the deal – and a new market and owner that wanted to go big. Mission accomplished, Ryan Smith.

  • Of note: Peterka signed a five-year, $7.7 million per season contract as part of the deal.

Did the Sabres get enough – power forward prospect Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesselring – for one of their best young players? Our trade graders, including yours truly, aren’t so sure, but a lot will hinge on Doan’s development and Kesselring’s ability to absorb tough minutes alongside Rasmus Dahlin or Owen Power.

good, they needed to fix that. I actually don't have an issue with any of the rule changes coming out of the CBA:

the second to last is aimed at Lou Lamoriello

I heard rumors this morning on Texas Sports Unfiltered of a group interested in bringing an expansion franchise to Austin.

Marchand resigns for six years with FLA. About $5M per season.

He’s 37.

yeah that's flat out sus as hell. I'm legitimately shocked the league allowed it.

So he's not gonna just retire and give up the last half of his contract, so is he gonna just play as long as he can and then go on LTIR? Definitely suspicious on that one.

Stankoven with an 8 year contract. Ya, getting Rantanen may have been a mistake.

Stars just drafted the next Stankoven.

that one was a bargain of a deal for the Canes.

the Miller trade and extension - not so much. Don't get me wrong, I've been high on the kid dating back to his time with the Badgers, that said a first (late as it may be), 2nd, and Morrow is A LOT to give up though.

The Colorado Avalanche has added another Norris Trophy winner to its defense corps.

Colorado signed Brent Burns to a one-year contract, the club announced Wednesday night. The contract is for $1 million in base salary, with up to $3 million in additional bonuses Burns can attain, according to a report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Burns, who will turn 41 years old in March, has played the past three season with the Carolina Hurricanes after a run of more than a decade as one of the best defensemen in the sport with the San Jose Sharks.

The 2017 Norris Trophy winner had six goals and 29 points in 82 games for the Hurricanes last year. Despite being one of the oldest players in the league, he still logged more than 20 minutes per game for a Stanley Cup contender.

An Ontario judge acquitted five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team on Thursday in their sexual assault case, saying the complainant's allegations lacked the credibility needed to justify the charges.

Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia said prosecutors could not meet the onus of proof for the charges against Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote.

All five players had pleaded not guilty to sexual assault in an encounter that took place in a London, Ontario, hotel room in the early hours of June 19, 2018. Years of speculation regarding the allegations -- fueled by a lawsuit settlement, parliamentary hearings and revived investigations by the police and Hockey Canada, along with an NHL investigation -- all preceded a complex trial earlier this year that included a mistrial and the dismissal of the jury, leaving the verdict to Carroccia.

Carroccia explained her reasoning for the acquittals in detail over the course of about five hours, highlighting the complainant's "tendency to blame others" for inconsistencies in her allegations. She also said the woman went to "great lengths" to point out that she was really drunk through the course of the night, but that is not supported by surveillance video from a bar and hotel that night and the testimony of others.

The best people.

Rumor is that it's his security bunch. Rocket, who have a history of getting into Twitter fights with randos. Also that it wasn't Dangle but a different Steve that actually said the stuff that pissed them off.

At any rate it's good fodder for the off-season.

RIP to Ken Dryden, lived an incredible life.

And man, this is a great book, probably the best book ever written by a pro athlete:

He was a good shit between the pipes, even though it’s always fuck Les Habs. The Bruins actually drafted him and then traded him a few weeks later. Whoops.

I loved Kenny Dryden. Was my favorite goalie of my #2 team. I loved that era of Montreal. The Penguins will always be my #1 but, always broke my heart. I can still name most of that mid-70s roster.

Dryden was awesome.

R.I.P.

Sounds like Kaprizov actually did turn down the 8-year extension. Ouch…
