In a little less than a month, a band calling itself The Velvet Sundown has amassed more than 550,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

With two albums — “Floating On Echoes” and “Dust and Silence” — released in rapid succession in June, the group’s sudden rise has been as mystifying as their digital footprint is sparse.

The group’s bio is drenched in dreamlike metaphor, introducing its members as “vocalist and mellotron sorcerer Gabe Farrow,” guitarist Lennie West, bassist-synth alchemist Milo Rains and percussionist Orion “Rio” Del Mar. But no trace of these supposed musicians exists online — not even a modest trail of interviews, performances or social media activity.

That is, until an Instagram account surfacedon June 27, bearing images critics have called “eerily AI-generated.”

these guys seem pretty cool. I mean, like, cooler than cool. Coolest even.

It's always the hands. Even when they have 5 fingers, they always look the same. Then there is the lighting. Nice try AI. Fuck this dystopian nightmare we have created.  Ole Ted K was right.

I'm not sure if the allegation is that the photos are AI-generated, or the music is, or both.

Beato's theory is that AI-generated songs are harder for an algorithm to split into stems - which strikes me as a plausible theory but certainly not a slam-dunk.

Or if the music was made by some dude in his bedroom, and then he marketed it with photos that were deliberately chosen to be recognized as AI-generated.

I guess you could argue that if we're talking about it, then the ploy worked (but based on that YouTube clip, they're not gonna get any streams from me).

Gorillaz not actually animated.  When reached for comment on this scandal, one band member said “I’m not happy.”
