Uh, the other thing being when Binney enters the match Spears sits on the bench. That's even bigger to me than replacing Swindle, and I love both Swindle and Kahahawai.  I think there's something

  • That's going to be a new McCombs graduate diving all over the floor in a few hours.

  • If Vandy finishes off Cal (leads 2-0), the challenge will end in an 8-8 tie Texas, Bama, MSST and OU all had 5 set wins today

If we are not ranked #1 next week, then idk. Not that it matters to win the natty.

Not unless Nebraska loses

Nonetheless, this team is sure fun to watch. It's been a really impressive early season run, no question. I feel like that's a conversation better left for after the season. Without question, though, this team looks a heck of a lot better in the early going than the last couple of years.

So, you’re say we have a chance…..?

Last year’s team was really missing the fire that came from O’Neal and Ella in 2023

Madi was very nonchalant and Jenna was usually like a deer in the headlights

Ella had a stare down stuff block yesterday that would rival O’Neal’s stare downs

This is Ella’s team. Averi wasn’t the alpha setter we’ve come to know and love. Shook Syndrome. Hannah Allison, Chloe Collins, even Jhenna Gabriel had that swagger

SEC Setter of the Week

Texas’ Ella Swindle, a junior from Columbia, Mo., averaged 11.00 assists per set and helped the Longhorns to a .425 team hitting percentage in wins over No. 9 TCU and No. 21 Baylor. Swindle registered 35 assists, two kills, one block and one ace in the sweep over the Horned Frogs. She added 31 assists, five digs, three aces, one kill and one block in the sweep over the Bears.

SEC Freshman of the Week

Texas’ Cari Spears, a right side from Frisco, Texas, averaged 5.33 points and 4.67 kills per set and owned a .600 hitting percentage in wins over No. 9 TCU and No. 21 Baylor to help the Longhorns remain undefeated in non-conference matches this season. On Wednesday, Spears registered 10 kills on 19 swings and zero errors for a .526 hitting percentage and added five digs and three blocks in the sweep of the Horned Frogs. On Friday, she matched her career-high mark of 18 kills on 26 attempts and one error for a .654 hitting percentage and also tallied four digs, three blocks, one ace and one assist in the three-set win over the Bears.

Is that 3 weeks in a row for freshman of the week?

Welcome to the SEC, 'Dores

Your first match since 1980 is a tough one

Also with Vanderbilt bringing back volleyball, Oklahoma State is now the only P4 team who does not sponsor women's volleyball.

I did a very quick and shallow dive into comparing Texas and Nebraska records to date, and yes, Nebraska has some impressive wins too....but I'm surprised they are nearly unanimous No. 1.

But it don't make a shit....as long as we rip their hearts out and stomp 'em flat again in the Finals....

AVCA is notoriously stubborn with dropping teams who don't lose. Hell, sometimes you lose and don't at all - Baylor moved up a spot after we swept them and Pitt is behind Kentucky, who they swept.

The resume arguing over Nebraska/Texas currently is going to look like:

Nebraska swept Stanford, who took Texas to 5
But Texas swept Creighton, who took Nebraska to 5

So, a wash.

Kentucky and Wisconsin will be our only other common opponents this year - Texas plays Kentucky on November 2 (Kentucky took Nebraska to 5) and Nebraska will play Wisconsin on October 31 (Texas swept Wisconsin)

Nebraska plays the following ranked or RV teams in B1G play: Michigan (RV) x2, 15 Penn State x2, 10 Purdue, 7 Wisconsin, Oregon (RV), 12 Minnesota, UCLA (RV), 17 USC
Texas plays the following ranked or RV teams in SEC play: 3 Kentucky, 13 aggy, 19 Florida, 21 Missouri, 22 Tennessee, South Carolina (RV)

Assuming rankings hold, Nebraska will play a total of 14 ranked or RV teams and Texas will play 13 ranked or RV teams.  Texas played 7 of theirs in non-conference, so it is likely Nebraska is going to take a loss or two (or three) in B1G play, playing 10 ranked or RV teams.

It is very likely at some point, Texas moves up to #1 for a brief time.  Don't be surprised if Texas and Nebraska just flip flop at #1 and #2 in the polls during conference play.

They are by far the 2 best teams in the country, right now.

Cari follows in Stafford's footsteps, who won it the week of September 7

Still early, but Texas is the only school this year to win two AVCA POW awards, with 2 different players.  Nebraska, Wisconsin and SMU each have 1 award

Funny enough, they list Cari as an OH, but she is playing OPP this year

Not sure if intentional or not, but the first 500 fans tomorrow get a free sweatband

Vandy's original program folded in 1980 and they were pretty popular in that era

After four weeks, Texas is the only program to win an SEC player of the week award.

Some really good matches this week:

Wednesday
(RV) Michigan @ #1 Nebraska
#5 Pitt @ #11 SMU
#21 Missouri @ #13 aggy

Friday
#21 Missouri @ #2 Texas
#8 ASU @ #18 Kansas
#17 USC @ #15 Penn State

Saturday
#9 TCU @ #20 Baylor

Sunday
#11 SMU @ #5 Pitt

I see the SEC is doing a very interesting grouping of road schedules to minimize travel - Vanderbilt/Texas and Mizzou/aggy today, and then the road teams flip flop and play Missouri/Texas and Vandy/aggy on Friday, so both can just bus over to the next city with a day in between.

For the record, I did not stomp her foot.  I've been quite pleased with her setting this year and she's mostly avoided jump sets.

Fucking announcers still in orgasmic euphoria over an ace while they follow it up with an oob serve

Haha at least we won a national championship the last time she had a foot problem (which I think is why her jump set is off)

Pretty impressive showing from Vandy in their debut SEC match. They’re going to win a handful of conference games.

Oh, I'm sure she has.  But in her first go-round, she was doing so excessively, and relatively poorly, until a foot injury curtailed it.  And the NC followed.

Did pretty well with Binney setting. The D ball connection with her and Cari isn’t there yet, but that’s not a surprise. She’s been a back row setter all year and back row setters don’t set the D ball to Cari (bc she’s not in the back row when Binney is in for the double sub)

I remember. And I don't know what about her jump set was so different than her regular set but it made a difference. This year i feel she's been jump setting at the same rate as in 23. I don't think she's jumping as high but that's the only difference Ive noticed.

Mizzou did not look very good against aggy, despite taking a set.  They lost the fourth set, 25-8.  Yes, 8 points scored by the #21 team in the country.

I think we will be just fine if Binney has to start on Friday - the most important thing is getting Ella healthy for the aggy-Kentucky-Florida-Auburn stretch in a month (October 31, November 2, November 7, November 12

Ames also got pulled after set 1 for Bunton - feels like Elliot is managing everyone against the less-than-good SEC programs we are going to face after the OOC gauntlet.  Ella likely sat as a precaution and Ames missed the final 2 sets and we didn't miss a beat.

Our next 9 matches, the highest ranked team is RPI Futures 19 Tennessee and 30 Missouri, with the rest between 65 and 126.   I would not be surprised if this stretch of 9 matches are eight 3-0 wins and a 3-1 win over Tennessee.   Some of the teams coming up have super inflated records, until you dig down and someone like MSST is 10-0 with 1 P4 win (and it's Duke, not even good).

Then the stretch that will make or break our SEC championship hopes:

23 aggy
5 Kentucky
26 Florida
28 Auburn

The conference channels are so great for being able to watch women's sports.    Last night we were able to watch 4 matches at a time, with a couple channels going back to back (not to mention i watched a great 2nd half of ND/North Carolina soccer).

Nebraska and Texas seem to be far and away the best two teams.   Sure the 3-8th teams could get them on the right day come tourney time, but it should be Texas and Nebraska at the end.      The athleticism of the bigs on Tex/Neb are just superior.    And flipping channels back and forth really made it obvious.

Stafford and AVW did the work yesterday with Cari having her first major off night as a freshman

Stafford 14-0-23 (.609)

AVW 10-1-16 (.562)

Cari 9-7-20 (.100)

Harvey 8-1-9 (.778)

Bunton 2-1-4 (.250)

Ames didn’t record an attempt in set 1 and Devin didn’t play since we didn’t run the dub sub
