Uh, the other thing being when Binney enters the match Spears sits on the bench. That's even bigger to me than replacing Swindle, and I love both Swindle and Kahahawai.  I think there's something

I’m just annoyed out of all the 2 seeds, the one we didn’t play in the regular season wasn’t ours.

I would have liked to have played SMU

Boy, me too.

I have nothing against Carlson. By all accounts she's a standup person who was put in a bad situation last year through no fault of her own. But all the Swindle hate with all the Carlson love has driven me batty on Volleytalk.

I wanted to see Texas abuse Carlson in the front row rotation until the Mustangs screamed calf rope.

Frankly, if someone offered me Nebraska vs the field, I’d take 🌽

I do not see a team that's going to stop them, but if there is one, they're probably facing them in the regional finals in Louisville. Those pins for Louisville are just so dang short.

I've never studied the NCAA's process for building a VB bracket. Do they seed teams all the way from top to bottom, then split them out as best possible? Is regionality part of it?  TV ratings? Committee biases/grudges? Enlighten me.

Like all NCAA committees, they are inconsistent. For instance, Penn St is driving distance to Pitt, but got sent to Austin. I wish they’d focus more on avoiding rematches from the regular season. Like we get it, Texas and Stanford meet in the regionals so much

They seed 1-32.  33-64 aren’t seeded, but rather pooled geographically, and the 400-mile travel radius comes into play when selecting where they’ll go.  After that it becomes a filler with easiest travel.

We were probably 1 or 2 solid backup players away from being in.  Both setters were injured going into the season - one rolled her ankle and wasn't cleared until day of the 1st match and the other broke her hand the day before (will need surgery in the off-season), so we didn't get her back until conference play.  Juggling the offense from a 5-1 w/ broken hand to 5-1 @ 60% on her ankle, to 6-2 when broken hand came back was a big adjustment.  We were also thin on the back line going into the season w/ only 1 true little, and she got a concussion which kept her out for 5 matches so we had to put our starting OH at L, and we weren't deep enough at OH to make it work...plus, she's our best overall player, 6 rotations, excellent back row for an OH, but not a true L.  Super frustrating, because the last month of the season with everyone healthy, that squad was BUZZING.  8-0 to close conference play and a 2-3 loss in the SBC tournament semis to Arkansas State, who swept JMU for the title, and we took both from JMU at their house the week before.

Our OOC was strong af too:

Stephen F Austin - won the Southland - Match 1 w/ our #2 setter at 60% on a busted ankle and hadn't practiced
UTEP - 25-4, CUSA regular season champs
Arizona State - won the B12 - lost in 5 w/ the 1st 2 sets going 25+ - we pull that out, we're in
Tulsa - won the American - they swept us, and I'm still not sure how they dominated us so thoroughly at home
UCLA - regional 8 seed
Stanford - regional 2 seed

We lose our top 5 scorers and our L, so it's a complete overhaul going into the PAC next year.

Good luck to the Horns in the Tournament!  I was able to make the Stanford match at Moody this year, and that 5th set was just ELECTRIC!  Tough draw as y'all have noted, and I know expectations are always high for your team, but if you can make the Final 4 this year, that should be considered a MASSIVE win for this season given the youth movement.

Elliott catching a slight stray with this headline 😂 tbh I thought our teams always wore the ponytail holders because of a sponsorship, I didn’t realize he created them!

Not sure what this has to do with recruiting, but I took my volleyball-loving 11 year old girl to a match against Missouri this year and it was a ton of fun. I felt like Jackie Daytona out there cheering on the lady horns!

I never know Elliot was the genius behind it.  I thought it was mostly Andrea, or them doing it together.  He invented it, gave her one, she used it in an emergency and bam.

Doesn't mention it being patented.  That would probably be a difficult thing to patent, being basically an elastic cord, but would be fun to try.

But one day, Nucete-Elliott was at beach volleyball practice when two of her hair ties snapped. She quickly remembered Elliott's hair tie in her car.

"I used the entire 34-inch version of the product, put it in my hair, called him right after," she says. "I say, 'We have something here. 100%. This is different.'"

Nice article on Torrey Stafford.    Lengthy, but nice read.

Excerpts:

Quote

Texas got the first shot at Stafford. Aside from what she heard about UT's on-court plans for her, Stafford liked the sense of family within the Texas volleyball program and that the spouses of the coaches were around on her official visit. Brigham described Texas as a "family environment, family program, if that makes sense."

Stafford appreciated that UT coach Jerritt Elliott didn't pry too much into her decision to leave Pitt. She had played in the Under Armour All-American game in high school with Texas returnees Ella Swindle and Nya Bunton, and she valued the honest feedback that she received from Swindle about the setter losing playing time her sophomore season and from Bunton about the injuries that the middle blocker had dealt with in college. It didn't hurt that Ramsey Gary, a libero who was also an Under Armour All-American in Stafford's class, was being recruited by Texas at the same time after deciding to transfer from Indiana.

Stafford's decision to become a Longhorn was a full-circle moment for her family. She's the younger sister of Imani McGee-Stafford, who played basketball at Texas from 2012-16.

McGee-Stafford, though, didn't play much of a role in her sister's recruitment to Texas. Stafford said that McGee-Stafford, who's 11 years her senior, may have just sent her a text with the "Hook' em hand" emoji during the entire process. McGee-Stafford said the extent of her efforts may have been passing along the phone number of former UT standout Khat Bell.

"I was very hands-off," McGee-Stafford said. "She knew I love Texas, and when she picked Texas, I was super geeked about it. But first of all, Texas sells itself, especially Texas volleyball. That's a storied program."

Because they're talented and could get hot. They haven't played like a team most of the season, but that doesn't mean they can't pull it together for 1 big match.

Ehhhh.  Stop Martin, you win. Or let her have hers, bc the rest of the team isn’t that good. This is not the Penn State of last year.

They're not that talented. Kennedy Martin is awesome, though.

They don't pass that well. They don't serve all that tough. Their outsides aren't that terminal. They have setting issues. Their middle block is nothing to write home about. Other than that, they're amazing.

I loved that article. Danny Davis knows how to cover UT volleyball with so much heart.

It's crazy how much of a faith based team Texas is. Year after year it's a huge component. I've never heard either Elliott or his wife talk about their faith. Don't know if David Hunt has any thoughts in that area. I know Ben Josephson does. But the players consistently make references to it. It's been that way for years.

Think Elliot has just cultivated a culture where you can be yourself and whatever motivates you is what motivates you.
