July 18Jul 18 Was talking about this with a buddy the other day, and I kind of feel like Texas is the only school that has not had a single loss to the transfer portal of a guy that they were seriously intent on keeping or had plans for in the context of their team the next year. I don't care that Xavier Alford went on to be an all conference player somewhere else. Conversely, if Arch transferred and was a total and complete bust I don't care about that either. Alford doesn't count and we didn't work really hard to keep him. Kudos to becoming a better player with more opportunity somewhere else. Arch would absolutely count b/c we would obviously want to keep him- it doesn't matter if he went somewhere else and busted. Make sense? Texas- can't think of a single player we lost that we had plans for an wanted to keep Alabama- Downs, Bond, who else Georgia- AD Mitchell, Carson Beck (I think- stockton seems like he sucks I don't think they wanted him over Beck but- maybe???) Ohio State- Hero Kanu (he was absolutely planned for in their two deep going into this year- right)- I know they were pissed when they lost him. Quinn Ewers? Did tOSU want to keep him at the time? Try hard? aggy- too many to list, probably, but then again most of them sucked. Walter Nolen? Who else have the lost that's good. Oklahoma- Dillon Gabriel? I guess maybe he doesn't count as they didn't try to retain him b/c ----> Jackson Arnold? I guess he doesn't count either as they didn't try to retain him (probably). Ooof their development of players has sucked- you hate to see it. Who you got as OU's biggest transfer loss they wanted to keep? LSU- Michigan Domers USC-w Oregon Cal- Endies? Pick any school you like. If this trend continues of us never losing anyone we try to retain (it can't continue forever- right) and picking up guys from other schools that represent the best of their exPorts I like where our roster management will be, basically, forever. I don't think we've lost any like I said. Maybe I'm forgetting someone. I know we had a couple close calls. Also- I wonder how many guys we ended up getting that were other schools major losses?
July 18Jul 18 OU lost Nic Anderson. I'm sure they would have wanted to keep him. He went to LSU. A&M surely didn't want Evan Stewart to leave. LT Overton started most games for Alabama. I'm sure there are more from that class alone. Edited July 18Jul 18 by Plorant

Also- an interesting point- any coaching regime change is going to be where you probably see the most brutal action in the portal. It's amazing the "talent" drain they've had at QB the last 5 years.
July 19Jul 19 Don't know if these teams tried to keep them or just what their situation was but: Quinshon Judkins OM>tOSU Kadyn Proctor Iowa>Bama Max Klare- Purdue>tOSU I'm sure WSU wasn't thrilled to lose Mateer to OU Clemson losing Andrew Mukuba to us As far as Texas players going out, I agree that most were fairly replaceable, but I liked Justice Finkley and Kitan Crawford.
July 19Jul 19 Losing Terrance Brooks hurt at the time. I thought he was slated to be one of the starters. With Jahdae moving to CB, however, there's no way Brooks would have started. Not even sure what really happened to him. He transferred to Illinois, where he barely played. Now he's not even on their roster, and he never made a transfer portal announcement. Maybe JUCO?On a separate note, OU lost Cayden Green last year, and then the fans review bombed his dad's business out of spite.
July 19Jul 19 Aggy dipshits lost their best receiver from last year right? Noah? Terrance Brooks sucked. Dude got burned deep repeatedly in the last spring game he played before transferring. And I personally know Georgia fans who actually believed they were better off after Carson Beck got hurt lol. They overtly hated that motherfucker Edited July 19Jul 19 by MirrOlure
July 19Jul 19 Re: Brooks CB Terrance Brooks no longer on Illinois football team by Joey Wagner Mar 11 Spoiler CHAMPAIGN — Cornerback Terrance Brooks is no longer on the Illinois football team, head coach Bret Bielema announced on Tuesday. Third-year offensive lineman Magnus Moller also left the team last fall. Brooks spent one season in Champaign after transferring from Texas. Brooks was a marquee transfer addition prior to last season but played just 158 defensive snaps and was behind Kaleb Patterson, Torrie Cox Jr., and Jaheim Clarke on the depth chart. Brooks did not play the final five games last season and played just five snaps in the final six games of the year. He played in seven games for the Illini this season with five tackles. He did not start a game this season. Brooks was a four-star transfer last offseason after leaving Texas and chose Illinois over a number of offers, which included Michigan and USC. He was the No. 105 overall transfer last cycle and No. 11 overall cornerback. Bielema said on Tuesday: "He wasn't with us at the bowl game as well and didn't participate with that. I think Terrance is actually still in school and I've had some communication with his folks and him but he hasn't been with us since three or four days prior to the bowl game."

Judkins wanted to leave for a contender Mukuba wanted to play in a system that fit his style I'm sure Klare wanted an upgrade and more exposure Proctor I think was just money whipped. He was pretty meh early on, but if I remember correctly he got better. His flip-flopping was weird, but whatever Mateer had nothing to lose. I'm sure he wanted to move to a program that could get him to the NFL. You liked Crawford? He was terrible outside of being a gunner. Nice kid, I'm sure, but he's one of the worst safeties I've seen in a long, long time. He and Jerrin Thompson were...shitty at their positions.
July 19Jul 19 Not sure we want to consider folks like: Rourke Ohio>Indiana If it's too early to consider Mendoza Cal>Indiana I acknowledge that its non-contender schools to a mid school so they might not be in alignment with the nature of this thread. Per @MirrOlure above, on Beck, I really don't think Georgia was keen on keeping him. His numbers/issues with health, INTs and incomplete passes nearly mirrored Ewers. (Not hating) Had he returned there might have been a similar controversy Texas saw in the locker room or else where. I am of the position that Geogria told him to go shop.
July 19Jul 19 Well that, and we broke Beck, so it made Georgia's decision to cut bait that much easier.

Ideally, and I think it would be fun- we could have like top 5 or whatever players from every school in America. So subpar to mid definitely fits in the spirit of this thread. 20 or so posts in my take is still that Texas has no names on the list. Some of this is really interesting in things like- oh Gabriel is a big loss right? Oh, Oklahoma shoved him out the door? If you weren’t plugged in your probably didn’t know that. If you are plugged in and saw Jackson Arnold sucking you might know it but not understand it- but there’s some subtleties that fans of the school might have more insight into than us.

Moore- UTSA DT- Syracuse. He was a Freshman AA at the hardest sport to recruit- they damn sure wanted to keep him- but have they lost anyone worse? Endies- Cal? I didn’t think Beck was good- it just seems ballsy to push a guy out when you have total and complete abject shit behind him. Stockton was pretty crappy and I am hopeful he will continue to be. His wheels surprised Texas on the first drive. By and large, he was neutralized after that. Beck was not that great, but it is not like they have Matt Stafford sitting on the bench waiting his turn. I hope for nothing but misery for UGA and its fans as long as Smart is there.

July 20Jul 20 LSU football has already lost most of its 2023 recruiting class. It's not alone in the SEC. BY WILSON ALEXANDER | Staff writer Jul 18, 2025 Quote ATLANTA — Two years ago, Brian Kelly and his staff signed their first full recruiting class. It included one player who has already turned into a star, linebacker Whit Weeks, and a few others who have become starters. But by the time the spring transfer portal closed, most of those players had left LSU before their junior year. LSU signed 25 high school recruits in the 2023 class, and 15 of them (60%) are gone. Fourteen transferred, while one withdrew before he ever practiced. Traditionally, juniors formed the backbone of a team. They had spent a few years developing, and they had to play one more season before they could leave for the NFL. But that won’t be the case this fall, and LSU isn’t alone in the SEC. Two years after the 2023 class arrived, nine SEC teams have lost at least half of their high school signees, primarily to the transfer portal. Arkansas (86%) and Mississippi State (81%) have lost the highest percentage of their classes. Missouri and Texas are tied for the lowest at 28 percent. Using online rosters and media reports, The Advocate looked up where every high school signee in the SEC that year is now to determine how much of the recruiting classes left their original school. Percentages do not account for junior college signees or transfers. They include medical retirements and players no longer listed on a roster. Recruiting misses are nothing new, and sometimes players are encouraged to enter the transfer portal. The numbers showed which teams retained their players and how common it has been to lose large chunks of a class in an era with unlimited transfers, immediate eligibility and unchecked NIL payments. Teams that lost the most Arkansas, now entering its sixth season under coach Sam Pittman, only has three players left from the 2023 class. Seventeen transferred — 13 of them to other power-conference programs — and one player medically retired. To make up for the lack of retention, the Razorbacks signed 54 transfers over the past two years. "It could be playing time," Pittman said at SEC Media Days. "It could be finances. Probably the majority of it is finances. But you'd have to ask those guys." Pittman said that Arkansas had to expand its recruiting footprint the past few years because NIL made it difficult to recruit in-state players. He believes revenue sharing has put Arkansas "back on even keel with everybody, which we weren't." Mississippi State actually lost more players than Arkansas — 21 total with 19 to the transfer portal — but it started with a larger class. The 2023 recruiting cycle was also the last before the sudden death of coach Mike Leach. Mississippi State changed coaches again a year later, and rosters often undergo significant upheaval during transitions. "You think about the transformation," Mississippi State coach Jeff Lebby said. "Eighty percent of our players on our roster right now, they're guys that are in their first or second year of being inside the program." Seven other teams — Kentucky (63%), Oklahoma (60%), LSU, Auburn (59%) Ole Miss (56%), Tennessee (56%) and South Carolina (52%) — already lost at least half of their classes. All of them except Tennessee signed at least 18 transfers during the offseason. The best at retention Georgia coach Kirby Smart said 54% of his roster would be first- or second-year players. "Very big change for us," Smart said. "I thought last year was probably one of the most veteran teams I've been a part of." Still, Georgia has been one the best in the SEC at keeping its players, a primary reason for its sustained success. The Bulldogs have lost 46% percent of their 2023 class. Ten transferred, all of them to other power-conference teams, and two players medically retired. While coaching changes have the potential to blow up a signing class, Alabama and Texas A&M kept theirs together. Alabama has lost 42% of its players despite coach Nick Saban’s retirement, and starting left tackle Kadyn Proctor even returned to the Crimson Tide a few months after transferring to Iowa. Texas A&M, which fired coach Jimbo Fisher during the 2023 season, also lost 42% of the class. But the highest rates of retention over the past two years were at Missouri, Texas and Florida, in that order. All of them have lost less than 10 players to the transfer portal from their 2023 classes. Texas signed 25 players that year, including quarterback Arch Manning and linebacker Anthony Hill, and only seven have left the team. Meanwhile, LSU, Oklahoma and Tennessee signed the same number of recruits, and all three have lost at least half of their 2023 classes. Even though Florida has gone 13-12 since that recruiting cycle, coach Billy Napier’s first full class largely has remained intact amid speculation about his job security. Only six of the 20 high school signees (30%) have transferred. Napier said he tells the ones who stayed that they set the example within a program trying to return to contention. "I think that's one of the reasons we've been able to keep it together is we told them when they came in, 'Look, it's not going to all be sunshine and rainbows here. We're in this thing for the long haul,'" Napier said. "So, I think a lot of this is how you pitch it in recruiting. We're going to continue to do that, and retention is more important than it's ever been." What happened at LSU? For LSU, the 25-member class was supposed to set the foundation of Kelly’s team after the rocky end of the Ed Orgeron era. The group was ranked No. 5 in the country, according to 247Sports, which is the highest-ranked class of Kelly’s tenure to this point. But heading into preseason camp next month, there are only 10 players left. One of them, running back Trey Holly, remains indefinitely suspended as he awaits trial for an illegal weapon charge. Six of the 11 top-200 prospects, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, are gone. That includes the two highest-rated recruits, five-star offensive tackle Lance Heard and top-50 edge rusher Da’Shawn Womack. Heard left after one year for Tennessee, and Womack went to Ole Miss after struggling to crack the rotation for two years. Two top-100 wide receivers, Jalen Brown and Shelton Sampson, never contributed before they transferred. For the most part, the players who left were going to need to develop or could find earlier playing time elsewhere. But the only top-100 prospect still on the team, defensive back Javien Toviano, has bounced around the secondary without finding a major role yet. So far, the biggest success has been Weeks, who finished second in the SEC in tackles as a sophomore and represented LSU at SEC media days. Two others, offensive lineman DJ Chester and cornerback Ashton Stamps, started every game last season. The rest of the remaining class has yet to make an impact, but that could change in the fall. Tyree Adams is expected to start at left tackle after waiting behind Will Campbell, and Toviano will compete at safety. Running back Kaleb Jackson and offensive guard Paul Mubenga could have roles. Kelly has talked often about building the roster on high school signees and then retaining them. He still believes in that approach, but on top of losing so much from 2023, LSU only has four players on the roster who were in the 2022 or 2021 classes: quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, wide receiver Chris Hilton, linebacker Harold Perkins and backup offensive lineman Bo Bordelon. Of the 37 combined players in those classes — 2022 was smaller because of the coaching change — 22 of them transferred. Without a high rate of retention, LSU supplemented its needs through the transfer portal, especially this year. While signing the No. 1 class in the country, according to 247Sports, it looked for veterans who could start, trying to address the inexperience created by so much attrition. LSU may not add that many transfers in the future. It still would prefer to retain its recruits, and so far, it has done a better job with the 2024 class. They were freshmen last season. After one year, only four of them have left the team. 2023 Recruiting Classes in the SEC Team name % of HS signees gone Total signees Transfers Out Other reason for leaving Arkansas 86 21 17 1 Mississippi State 81 26 19 2 Kentucky 63 19 12 Oklahoma 60 25 15 LSU 60 25 14 1 Auburn 59 22 11 2 Ole Miss 56 16 9 Tennessee 56 25 13 1 South Carolina 52 23 9 3 Vanderbilt 48 23 9 2 Georgia 46 26 10 2 Alabama 42 26 11 Texas A&M 42 19 8 Florida 30 20 6 Texas 28 25 7 Missouri 28 18 4 1

Plus, OSU had a history of up or out demands on the 2nd string when the rest of Div 1 was promising 4 year scholarships, and was at least familiar that this led to some solid depth and development talent bleeding away annually.
July 20Jul 20 On 7/19/2025 at 9:44 AM, SydneyCarton said: Fun thread, kudos for starting it. Judkins was viewed as a cancer or at least a prick and they did not work to retain him. Kiffin said good riddance on twitter. You can like Finkley and Crawford all you want, but they were not guys we tried to retain. They were flawed players who were never going to be anything here other than a teeener and a special teams demon. Terrence Brooks sucked and it did not hurt to lose him. The guy and his dad came to Texas asking for more money and we laughed and said good luck. He’d already lost his starting job to Muhammad by the end of his last season. in regards to the overall conversation, I think damn near every guy we’ve gotten was someone the other team wanted to retain. Ok, maybe not all of them. Norton and the other DT two years ago who sucked, but Norton ended up being a great pickup. Watson from Syracuse, Brevard, Endries, Matthew Golden, Isiah Bond, even Duke Catalon, all were viewed as big time gets to varying degrees as well as all the other folks mentioned. I am also pretty sure Brooks did not even start for Illinois after transferring there. He was addition by subtraction for Texas.
July 21Jul 21 The fact that I'm having to dig like this says a lot about the amazing job the staff has done with player retention but... no mention of Andrej Karic? I would think we had a spot on our two-deep for him last year. He did start on a playoff team and won SEC OL of the week after they beat Vandy the last weekend of November Not saying we missed him a ton - just that maybe he would have given us slightly more depth at guard?
July 21Jul 21 Not a bad player, but was there any attempt to keep him? At the time he left, he was essentially only being used as a jumbo TE / sixth OL

Answered your own question here. When Karic took his t-rex arms to Tennessee, he learned a new position and won the job. We were not relying on him as a backup tackle at the time.

I would think we had a spot on our two-deep for him last year. He did start on a playoff team and won SEC OL of the week after they beat Vandy the last weekend of November Not saying we missed him a ton - just that maybe he would have given us slightly more depth at guard? Yeah- I was sort of surprised by this one and I thought he would have been a guy that we were good with keeping around. It's an up or out world if you want to get paid- but I'd be surprised if the staff told him to hit the bricks. I'd also be sort of surprised if the staff offered him any money to stay. But, going to another SEC school, then becoming a starter on a good team sort of profiles as the kind of guy that you'd want to keep around, all things being equal.
July 21Jul 21 Karic is a sign of how Sark transformed the roster. He was a good player for us in my opinion, but what can you do when better and more talented players are ahead of you? It’s not like he was crap. We just had better players in front of him. That’s how wicked this roster is now.
