This looks promising. From the same folks that brought us Mare of Easttown. Mark Ruffalo starring.

Guesses:

The “Dark Hearts” are a stand in for the Pagans MC. It is Philly after all.

Tom Pelphrey’s crew are 3 brothers that rob drug dealers, and they of course run afoul of the Dark Hearts. Maybe a survivalist/prepper backstory?

Not sure on Ruffalo’s character, but he looks like shit and it appears his life is a mess. He has a True Detective Season 1 level performance in him. I hope we get to see it.

Doesn't seem to be much mystery to it.  That's fine, I guess.  But I prefer a whodunit to a character study.  Mare of East town was both, so I'll definitely give this a shot.

Premiere is tonight. Reviews are mixed, but word seems mostly good

Man, I don’t know that pilot could garner a bad review.

Spoiler

- Good, possibly great twist. Well done.

- Ruffalo’s alcoholic game is impressive. Tito’s in a styrofoam cup without a mixer or ice is commitment.

- The priest is great in everything. Perfect casting to demonstrate how far Tom has fallen.

- Captured the tension of a home invasion in a way I haven’t seen before. Take some notes Heat 2 if it ever gets made.

- Any idea how much they’re robbing in these heists? Home Invasion 1 was at best $30k. Seems like a paltry amount for a life sentence, but people do stupid shit for less. I listened to a pod today where a guy helped move a corpse for a pair of women’s sunglasses.

- I hope the show explains it, but what is Robbie’s code or motive? Money isn’t enough, and it appears that he’s not doing very well with his side hustle. Home invasion is a very intense, intimate crime.

- Robbie’s handler is probably the next big twist to drop. I’m guessing it’s the Dark Heart’s president ripping off his own guys.

- The niece is 1000% going to cooperate. The only question is how much damage she does.

Solid start. Intense final act.

Who do you think Ruffalo’s son killed? His mother/Ruffalo’s wife?

Really? I've always liked him.

I’ve found him annoying as fuck, and think he’s overrated as an actor.

My only Ruffalo is question is can he rise above the writing? He’s great in a great movie, Zodiac and Spotlight.

Pelphrey is already fully cooking.

He wasn't bad in Collateral

Ben from Ozark! He and Ruffalo are great in this.

Quality pilot.  Agree that Ruffalo's drunk acting was top notch.

More importantly he’s married to Kaley Cuoco.

Pelphrey and Ruffalo were great but the neice nearly stole the show.

The misfit task force members were good too (Ser Criston holla).  Especially the girl on the phone cussing out her ex about the recliner.

Ser Criston! I knew that face was familiar.

He's great at playing that touched character

Agreed

Also. I'm not a career criminal, so I can't actually speak to how hard it is to keep your mask on, but keep your damn mask on! They wouldn't be in this situation if they followed protocol!

I know it's par for the course, but it's hilarious how many non Americans are cast these in roles having relatively specific American inflections;. Buffalo's entire task force is non American actors, as is the 21 year old niece.

I believe it’s easier for the Brits to pick up the Delco accent.

Ruffalo is an accomplished veteran actor and he doesn’t even attempt the accent. Meanwhile, the kids sound like they’ve been eating water ices and hoagies since they were knee high to a grasshopper.

I wonder how anyone successfully commits crimes in masks. They're hot and sweaty and you can't see shit.

Watched the first episode last night.  I don't know if I can do another series where I don't like anyone.  Mayor of Kingston was that way.

Brits train to be actors. Americans train to be movie stars.

Some thoughts.

Spoiler

- Brutal beat for Peaches. No he shouldn’t be robbing people at gunpoint, but he’s dead, his fiancée is dead and her dad is dead.

- A lot of questions were answered in Episode 2, but the Dark Hearts have a collaborator and the police have a mole. Who are they?

- Prestige TV’s theory is that Margarita Levieva’s character Eyrn had an affair with Billy and Billy was beaten to death by the chapter president for sleeping with his old lady. Eyrn is now collaborating with Robbie out of revenge. Compelling and would make sense, but it’s a little too nice and neat for Ingelsby. We’ll see. Kind of interesting that Robbie said “not coming” instead of he or she isn’t coming when his tipster didn’t show.

- I didn’t  like Prestige TV’s theories on the police mole. They think it’s one of the kids, but all their theories were kind of weak.

- Robbie, not a super sharp guy, now has to hide a missing kid, keep his family together, keep his from going to the police, prevent his partner from freaking out, and oh yeah sell 12 kilos of the most dangerous drug in America. This is not going to end well for him.

- The Brandis Family dinner was probably the best HBO dinner scene since… The Sopranos. Dysfunction, estrangement, grief, and anger all mixing with pizza and Cholula. Very well done.

Yeah that was great all the way round.

Really good episode.  I'm in for as long as Ingelsby and HBO want to keep making shows together.

Watched both episodes last night, I loved it.   Kinda sucks it’s only 7 episodes, but hopefully that means less fluff.  So any idea how much the drugs they need to sell are worth?

Each kilo probably goes for $15-20k. Selling At $80/gram total street value 1.6 million.

Edited by MissingInAction

So how much do we think they could get offloading it, 1 mil?

Either way, that’s a lot more than I thought it was worth.

Last question, what’s the accepted spoiler etiquette?   I simply don’t read threads about shows I am not caught up on and don’t want to take a chance of it getting spoiled.  A show like this I’d think a week is enough time for anyone to catch up.

They might get $250k if they manage to sell it all at once. Street value is whats its worth by the time its broken up to sell to users which takes a few levels of distribution to get to.

Good point. The cops would seize it and say the “street value” is $100 million and it’s enough fentanyl to kill everyone on the Eastern Seaboard.

I think Robbie is going to take a haircut because the drugs are very, extremely hot and tied to a quadruple homicide and a high profile kidnapping. He can’t dump the drugs in the woods because it would burn his handler, but it’s more trouble than the value of the drugs.

Plus the channel of distribution was interrupted. Whomever expected a delivery and whomever expected to get paid is gonna be up the ass of everyone in the game.

It's like cheating on your taxes but not as bad.

Edited by MissingInAction

I would be surprised if they are successful in selling the drugs

Ingelsby has no chill. No episodes off.

Spoiler

- I’m preparing to have my heart ripped out. DJ Grassonova won’t make it out of Episode 5. I hope Sam makes it. Such a sweet kid.

- I wouldn’t recommend the Prestige TV recaps. Joanna Robinson basically jawboned this entire episode in her season predictions.

This show tries too hard

It’s not like you’re wearing it all day and you can see more than you think.  The key is to have a fitted mask.

What a great show, another fantastic episode.   Glad that temu rec league Tim Donaghy is headed to prison.  What a scumbag.

I loved it.

Nothing really to add other than I love seeing shows with the "Philly"-ish accent.

My dad's side of the family is from Chester County (Delco adjacent) and I hear their accents in the characters.  It's crazy that there are so many brits taking on these roles.  I guess all the actorrs from the area spend a lot of time trying to train the accent out of them.

Also, the neice is fucking hot.

She’s fantastic (the niece). I never saw CODA but apparently she was in that.

thats the ruffalo school of overacting

Grassonova is great.  Impressive to see the actor pulling it off after the smarmy Criston Cole.

Ruffalo getting thrown down the stairs after his wife died from that was a little on the nose.

I missed that. When did we learn how she died?
