Black Sabbath was mostly before my time, and I was always more interested in the guitarists on Ozzy's solo albums than I was in Ozzy himself. So since the news, I've been trying to pin down what made Ozzy the popular icon he is. For someone who represented a musical genre, he really didn't do much to define it. I mean, he didn't have an objectively great singing voice. He didn't compose the music or write the lyrics that were responsible for this new musical genre and which made him famous. I think he maybe only came up with some of the vocal melodies in his Sabbath and solo catalog. Musically, he was a front man in the most cynical use of the word. A figurehead who attained heights with a lot of others creativity doing most of the heavy lifting. And he had this whole career outside of making music that was engineered primarily by his wife. So what made Ozzy an icon? Ultimately, I think it was that Ozzy was Ozzy and nothing more or less. The Alamo-pissing, bat-head-biting Prince of Darkness. And people of a certain age and social standing loved him for it. He was the square peg to society's round hole who really had no capacity to be anything notable in established and traditional ways. So he lived life without much regard for if or how it might line up to anyone else's expectations and damn if he didn't wind up digging himself a hell of a square hole to exist in. That's something that resonates, man. Timelessly, across generations. Its the struggle of all young people coming of age and wondering how they could possibly become anything of note in a world that they seem to live on the fringes of. If Ozzy could do it, they can do it. It was the attitude. “That’s metal” basically means that’s something Ozzy would do. Edited July 23Jul 23 by Pato del Muerto

There were a few times I spent as much as 10 hours a day upstairs in my home studio studying Rand, Jake and Zakk. RIP Ozzy, you will be missed but I know you and Randy are already tearing it up, up there.🎸🎸🎸
July 25Jul 25 I’m gonna have to disagree with “didn’t have a great singing voice.” But it’s all subjective. Is there any scary music any more? I mentioned earlier that I encountered Sabbath in Jr High and it scared me a little. Same for Shout at the Devil in middle school. I remember finding Pantera and Slayer a little shocking until I fell in love with them. Are there any bands doing that to kids these days? I hope so. Maybe we need a new PMRC.

I've already copped to not being anywhere close to a Sabbath (or even metal) guy, but I've seen plenty of live clips of early Ozzy, and the guy had a very good voice. Maybe not as pyrotechnic as Halford or Dio, but the guy could sing.

When “Paranoid” came on MTV, all of us stopped and watched. Ozzy was transcendent.
July 25Jul 25 The AI art of the Prince of Darkness ascending to heaven is a bit much, but this made me grin. I think Ozzy would appreciate it.

July 25Jul 25 All I know is that I had heard for years about the evils of Ozzy Osbourne from parents, teachers, churches, media...I went to a friend's house in 8th grade and he put on the Bark at the Moon album. I thought to myself "I don't know if I'm going to hell or not, but I know I'm going to keep listening to this guy."
July 25Jul 25 I have loved seeing all the artists and bands pay tribute to Ozzy on social media. I think the only comparable passing in terms of both fans and other artists affected has been Prince (in the social media era). I could post so many War Pigs covers that I've seen in the past couple days - all excellent, imo (Faith No More, Temple of the Dog and TPain probably my favorites), but this is pretty awesome: also: Judas Priest still touring!

July 29Jul 29 Jake E Lee was the underrated Ozzy guitarist. Here’s an old video of a girl crushing one of his best.

August 4Aug 4 After Ozzy died, Facebook recommended I follow Geezer. His Facebook is pretty much like any normal dude…hiking, Aston Villa matches, vacations in Italy, taking the grand daughters to see Adele, playing on stage with the Foo Fighters. Other than the access music has given him, he is shockingly normal.
