My God.  I'm all for equality and all, but can we nip (pun intended) a few of the women off ESPN?  Someone by the name of Candy Maldonado (may have gotten the first name wrong) has an article about teams making or not making the playoffs.  Of course, Texas is the team that she'd bet on to not make the playoffs.  Fine.  Cool.  I have a couple of worries as well.  Namely that Texas could lose at OSU and at GA, and only have room for one more loss to make the playoffs.  But, she states that the Texas v aggy game is a coin flip.  Fuck's sake.

Only Candy Maldonado I recognize batted between Kevin Mitchell and Matt Williams for the Giants.

Hell yeah.  Just kidding.

I probably shouldn't have used a sexist angle.  It's just the stupid hot takes, from random pundits, these days.  Like that idiot Doering.  Ok, yes, Arch is probably overhyped, but to claim that some scrub transfer from Wash St. is going to win the Heisman is just stupid.  Even if he's actually good, the offensive personnel around him isn't.  It's a take that nobody will remember when OU goes 5-7 and Mateer gets sacked 7 times a game.  Some of these folks are no better or informed than the average texags poster.

Really looking forward to watching Endries do his thing, Uncle Peyton can forward some Dallas Clark vids to Arch for reference.

(And just to add to the stupid shit on the board, Jack has one of those faces that if you doubled the right side of his face [I guess that’d be “mirrored”) and did the same with the left, he’d look like two different people.)

Pam Maldonado?

Didn't realize she was on ESPN. She was on VSin (a gambling podcast feed) the last few years, and she's clueless. She's a Longhorn though.

So she's taking the Bohls/Justice by extra negative about the Longhorns avoid looking like a homer? Wonderful. Another one of those is just what we needed

Air quality index hit 184 where I am yesterday -- had to stay inside and read Surly. Watched the video of Jaggy McJacksonJr's sick catch. Looked at the AQI and noticed it had gone down. Rewatched the video. Noticed the AQI had dropped again. Watched it a couple more times and AQI went all the way down to 121.

Got skeered the air might improve so much we'd all get oxygen poisoning, so I quickly closed Surly and went upstairs to hide under the bed.

Update for today from Bobby with some interesting takes on the younger players.

*****

Texas will hold its fourth practice of training camp later today. It’s scheduled to begin at 6:30pm, just like last night.

The first two practices were held in the mid-afternoon of the Texas heat. They’re meant to get a team prepared for the worst conditions.

The team got a real feel for that. One Texas player was severely dehydrated and subsequently missed the next couple of practices (yes, I know who it is, but, no, I’m not going to name them).

Bottom line, the message from coaches is clear: stay hydrated, get your rest and treat your body right because this is an extremely taxing sport, especially in the middle of summer.

**

There’s a little positive chatter behind the scenes on recruiting.

Texas is gaining some confidence on a pair of players currently committed elsewhere.

**

There are so many talented young players on this roster, a few of them are already looking to leapfrog talented veterans or at least solidify a spot in the rotation either as a starter or key back-up.

Those players (so far) include:

- WR Daylon McCutcheon

- TE Emaree Winston

- OL Nick Brooks

- DT Josiah Sharma

- DE Lance Jackson

- NB Graceson Littleton

Others to watch for:

- WR Michael Terry

- TE Nick Townsend

- OL Jackson Christian

- DE-DT Justus Terry

- CB Kade Phillips*

- S Jonah Williams*

* Neither Phillips nor Williams practiced the first two days. But both have been received positive reviews through summer training, enough so to merit inclusion on this list.

**

KJ Lacey, Jamie Ffrench, Kaliq Lockett, Jordan Coleman, Zelus Hicks, Myron Charles, and Bo Barnes all look the part early but are not situated to make a major positional impact early. However, Hicks and Barnes could absolutely be major contributors on special teams. Lockett might also get some early run there, too. He was surprisingly good as a gunner and blocker in early punting practice reps.

**

We’ll keep our ears to the ground for more practice notes for you.

So either Campbell or Wingo was hungover at the first practice. Got it.

Like hearing about a young WR embracing all his roles, especially blocking. Encouraging if true.

What is the Texas Longhorns fall practice schedule? Workouts begin soon! - Longhorns Wire

Spoiler

What is the Texas Longhorns fall practice schedule? Workouts begin soon!
Trey Luerssen
Longhorns Wire

The Longhorns will begin fall camp on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at Denius Fields on the UT campus.

While there are a handful of practice windows open to the media, most of the Longhorns practices will be completely closed to the public.

The first week the team will work out without pads as Sark and the coaching staff install the primary schemes for the coming campaign. Then the Horns will strap on pads next week.

Texas will hold two intrasquad scrimmages on Saturday, Aug. 16 and Saturday, Aug. 23. Both scrimmages are also closed to the public.

It all builds up to Texas' season opener in the Horseshoe at the Ohio State Buckeyes on Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. CT.

The OSU guys are trying to be soft about it, but apparently the OSU defense looks dramatically better than the offense, mostly due to QB and OL play.  I think that was also the story in the spring. They did matchups 1’s vs 1’s, 2’s vs 2’s today and the defense was kicking the offense’s ass. A bright spot for the offense was when Smith beat Devin Sanchez deep by 5 yards for a TD.

You missed the word defense, but we can infer.

This certainly portends well for Texas regarding August 30th.

  • So how did Texas and OSU defenses rank in turnovers created in 2024?
  • Seemed like 2024 Texas defense was not good at causing fumbles...  Any predictions on whether Texas 2025 defense will be better at generating more turnovers?

I don’t have numbers in front of me, but Simmons and Hill combined for 7 FF. That’s a pretty good start, if repeated.

I also don’t have any statistics to back it up, but just watching last season it feels like we had a lot of forced fumbles that we didn’t recover, more so than usual. I’d be curious if anyone had stats and whether my gut is right or completely wrong.

Yeah, hits between tackles and downfield were where I was frustrated by 2024 defense related to FF...need more "ball stripping" going on from players not named Hill & Simmons.

(Have fun with that phrase Surly)

Some interesting commentary about Deandre Moore's confidence on yesterday's Coffee & Football. Linked to start at 34:56 and ends about the 37 minute mark. Hope he backs it up.

https://texaslonghorns.com/sports/football/stats/2024

We had 26 fumbles, lost 12.

Our opponents had 24 and lost 9.

2023, we fumbled 19 times to our opponents 14.

Back to 2022, we only had 9 fumbles and our opponents 11.
