We had 26 fumbles, lost 12.

Our opponents had 24 and lost 9.

2023, we fumbled 19 times to our opponents 14.

Back to 2022, we only had 9 fumbles and our opponents 11.

Yeah, only recovering 9 feels way low. Well, maybe not way low but shit you’d think 50/50 at worst.

i'm assuming they'll scrimmage next Saturday and the following Saturday?  feels like thats how they typically do things.

Definitely scrimmages 16th and 23rd per the statesmen and other websites. I know I heard in a IT or one of the OTF YouTube videos, the first one is 9 days after practice starts which is next week. 3 is normal. 1st one everyone goes ape shit cause the defense wins. Then the 2nd one nerves settle(depending on injuries). And the 3rd no one cares about because it's game week right after.

Baxter fumble kinda cost us the NC appearance 2 years ago. Not that it's his fault we still should've fucking won.

Blue lost a fucking fumble that game too.

Update for today from Bobby with some interesting takes on the younger players.

*****

Texas will hold its fourth practice of training camp later today. It’s scheduled to begin at 6:30pm, just like last night.

The first two practices were held in the mid-afternoon of the Texas heat. They’re meant to get a team prepared for the worst conditions.

The team got a real feel for that. One Texas player was severely dehydrated and subsequently missed the next couple of practices (yes, I know who it is, but, no, I’m not going to name them).

Bottom line, the message from coaches is clear: stay hydrated, get your rest and treat your body right because this is an extremely taxing sport, especially in the middle of summer.

**

There’s a little positive chatter behind the scenes on recruiting.

Texas is gaining some confidence on a pair of players currently committed elsewhere.

**

There are so many talented young players on this roster, a few of them are already looking to leapfrog talented veterans or at least solidify a spot in the rotation either as a starter or key back-up.

Those players (so far) include:

- WR Daylon McCutcheon

- TE Emaree Winston

- OL Nick Brooks

- DT Josiah Sharma

- DE Lance Jackson

- NB Graceson Littleton

Others to watch for:

- WR Michael Terry

- TE Nick Townsend

- OL Jackson Christian

- DE-DT Justus Terry

- CB Kade Phillips*

- S Jonah Williams*

* Neither Phillips nor Williams practiced the first two days. But both have been received positive reviews through summer training, enough so to merit inclusion on this list.

**

KJ Lacey, Jamie Ffrench, Kaliq Lockett, Jordan Coleman, Zelus Hicks, Myron Charles, and Bo Barnes all look the part early but are not situated to make a major positional impact early. However, Hicks and Barnes could absolutely be major contributors on special teams. Lockett might also get some early run there, too. He was surprisingly good as a gunner and blocker in early punting practice reps.

**

We’ll keep our ears to the ground for more practice notes for you.

Hook’Em!

Looks like Jackson Christian is turning out to be the Parker Livingstone of the OL

Was trying to find out how many Ewers had by himself and AI said 20 in the 2024 season. No way that's correct, right? Feels like he was in double digits though, but I couldn't find the right number.

I can remember 3 that had weird bounces right back to the other team or just unlucky recovery situations.

"The Football Database" says Quinn had 6 fumbles, 5 of which were lost.  I have no idea if that's accurate.

Quinn had somewhere between 5 and 20 fumbles lost last year. No idea if that’s accurate. As always, verify critical facts.

Between us and then looking at our collective opponents versus us, you have to go back to 2018 when we lost 5 of 16 fumbles at 31% for worse than the 34% we recovered last year.

So probably a reasonable assumption that we weren’t lucky in that department last year.

IT stuff:

Some Saturday afternoon quick hitters for you. The team will take to the practice field at 5:30 again today before being off on Sunday.

Star

This has probably been the position of greatest mystery the last couple of months. Wardell Mack and Graceson Littleton played Star (nickel) a lot during the spring and continue to do so. But, sources and logic lead us to the opinion that a more experienced veteran will get the start against Ohio State. Enter…Michael Taaffe.

The senior second-team All-American safety first made waves in the program at the position and he’s been there a pretty decent amount in the first three practices. He has looked good at the spot (one of the first players mentioned), though he has also worked at safety. While at safety he’s with Jelani McDonald. When Taaffe goes to Star, McDonald has been paired with Derek Williams, Xavier Filsaime, and Jordon Johnson-Rubell.

On the surface, it seems unlikely Taaffe would play Star outside of certain looks—he’s the main communicator, after all, and he’s unlikely to play the position in the NFL. But, he has the experience, intelligence, and selflessness to do it.

We’ll continue monitoring to see how it plays out.

Ryan Wingo and DJ Campbell

The sophomore wide receiver and senior offensive guard participated in the first practice but missed the second and third. Smart money says they won’t be back until Monday. While the issues aren’t something that should hamper them long term, they could each use a very productive August to springboard into the season.

They are two of the most important players to Texas’ success this year.

CJ Baxter is turning heads

The third-year running back looks pretty damn healthy. I haven’t heard he’s 100% but did hear he impressed in Friday’s thud tempo practice. Just him being out there is a big win. Not only does he appear healthy after his significant knee injury, he’s also carrying his weight as well as can be expected given the layoff.

Should we have expectations for him against Ohio State? Based on the first three practices, a trusted IT source believes Baxter will be available and play in Week 1.

Two Friday standouts

Junior linebacker Liona Lefau was mentioned for his ability in coverage. He’s a smart player who is always where he’s supposed to be. “When they’re in zone he’s like having another DB out there.”

Redshirt freshman quarterback Trey Owens had one of his best practices ever. When Sark brought in Matthew Caldwell he challenged the other quarterbacks to beat him out. Owens apparently took that to heart.

The most annoying thing this past offseason was watching Texas fans on various boards take turns on who could be the most pessimistic on CJ Baxter's health. My personal favorite was a guy on OTF who, after Baxter was cleared to rejoin team activities in May, said confidently that we shouldn't expect to see Baxter at all until the 2026 season. Upvotes all around, for this brave take.

Hell we had guys here last week talking about how Baxter will miss the first month or six weeks of the season. Well that would be pretty strange for a guy getting first team reps on July 30th, now wouldn't it. Anyway, it's great to see him looking good this early.

Who to believer.....CJ Vogel and Gerry Hamilton or IT?

They're not that far off. One says expect him to play, the other says don't expect to see much of him. Whatever. The next month will decide that.

So Wingo and Campbell had issues with dehydration which caused them to miss two days of practice.

I feel similar about Christian Clark. He was a big question mark because of the Achilles, and mentions of him looking good have pretty much been glossed over.  Either as unreliable at this stage of camp, or inconsequential i guess.

Key notes from Texas players after second practice of fall camp (247)

Spoiler

AUSTIN, Texas — Following the conclusion of fall practice No. 2 on Thursday afternoon, Longhorns offensive tackle Trevor Goosby, wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr., cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau, and edge Ethan Burke spoke to reporters. Here are some of the key notes from each players' time at the podium.

— DeAndre Moore Jr. doesn't lack confidence. The third-year WR shed light onto his goals for 2025

"First and foremost I want to win the natty," he said after the second practice of fall camp on Thursday. "I think we've got to the doorstep two years in a row — two too many for my liking. I want to win a national championship. We got short at the SEC Championship. I want to win the SEC Championship. As far as personal, I want the Texas touchdown record, I want at least 1,200 yards and I want to win the Biletnikoff."

Asked if he believes he's the best receiver in college football ...

"I do," Moore said. "I'm dynamic. You can put me in the slot, you can put me outside, you can put me in the backfield, you can put me at quarterback if you needed me to. Imma do it."

Moore is the leader of the wide receiver room for first year starting quarterback Arch Manning. Moore had one of his best outings of the season last year when Manning started for the SEC opener against Mississippi State. The West Coast native caught 4 passes for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns. Moore was asked about the differences between Manning and former quarterback Quinn Ewers.

"One had baby wheels and one had super wheels," adding we know which is which.

— Jaylon Guilbeau moves to outside corner, has new source of motivation

"It's been going smooth," Guilbeau said of the position change. "Just getting in the rhythm of playing corner. I've been at nickel the last three, three and a half years. Just getting in the rhythm of playing corner and getting my traits back. I played it in high school but once I got here I went to nickel. Just getting the fundamentals back and building on the small details."

Guilbeau is doing the same thing Jahdae Barron did last season, making the move from nickel to corner.

"I'm athletic. I can do it all. Pretty simple," Guilbeau said, adding he picks Barron's brain about the transition. He says Barron told him: "go to outside and show that you can cover."

Guilbeau has a new source of motivation this season after welcoming his newborn daughter, Ryleigh , earlier this month.

"This is the reason why I'm doing it," he said. "I got a little daughter that's leaning on me. I wake up every morning and kiss my daughter on the forehead and tell her: 'Baby, I got you. This is what daddy is doing. I got you. You don't gotta worry about nothing.' I feel like being a father just lights a fire under you."

— Trevor Goosby takes over for three-year starter Kelvin Banks Jr.

"I just love it. I love it," Goosby said of coming to work every day. "I love playing O-line. I love being at The University of Texas. I wake up with breath in my lungs every day and it's a blessing from God every day. So I get 24 hours, God gives me 24 hours. What am I going to do with it? I'm going to be the best version of myself. I do it for my family, too. I do it for my mom, both of my brothers, and my pops, and everybody else. I got people counting on me, so that really keeps me going."

Texas' red-zone struggles have reared their ugly head twice the last two seasons in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

"We definitely take it personally," Goosby said. "A lot of the red zone, it was on us most of the time. I feel like that's something we can really fix. If we really get it locked down we're going to be an elite offense."

Goosby stepped up in big situations last season, filling in for Banks or Cam Williams at various points late in the year. That experience prepared him to be more of a leader this season.

"I was prepared last year," he said. "That preparation really carried over into this year. I can credit Coach Flood and Kelvin Banks, all the guys that have graduated, they really helped me with my leadership."

Ethan Burke ready to be consistently elite, notes right tackle Brandon Baker can piss him off

"I think I've had spurts where I've been elite, but just for me, being consistent every time I step out on the field being the best version of myself," Burke said.

Burke spoke on going against Texas' two tackles, whether it be Goosby or right tackle Brandon Baker.

"Trevor, just the length and the stature, he's a huge human being," he said. "I would say his physicality, too. Both him and Baker are very physical. Baker does a good job. I think his fundamentals are great. Rushing, he gets this hand on my rib and it pisses me off sometimes, but he's really good at it. Both of them are very physical players, but that's how they bring you through this program. Baker, just smart player, really hard worker, always here after getting extra work. He's always in the weight room after. He's the only guy in there after practice putting in extra work and he's getting extra recovery. For him that's really helped bring his game to another level."

Burke will play opposite Colin Simmons this season in what's the genesis of a quarterback's nightmare.

"Colin is just a great player and someone who's great to play off of for the interior guys and for me on the other end," Burke said. "And just communication. He's upbeat, fun guy to be around. I've grown really close to him so it's been outstanding."

Burke says "too many" people have come up to him this offseason to pat him on the back for his critical fourth down stop against Texas A&M last November. He says it's not a bad thing, though.

"t's a good feeling," Burke said.

However, the Austin native says he doesn't know if the moment of Longhorns lore has fully set in.

"Not right now," he said. "I think maybe in 20 years I'll reflect and think that was really cool. There's been so many cool moments just being on this team that in the future … right now I'm not seeing it fully. Then once I'm sitting down maybe with my kids or whatever who knows, just reflecting on it, it's going to be an awesome moment. That game and so many others, and we still have the future, so hopefully more to reflect on."

worse than the fumbles was the not stepping up in the pocket on 4th and 5 to deliver a ball to a guy wide open across the middle and he has to stop and dive to catch it and not make the first down

Its likely not going to be, but thats terrific marketing and sign me up for it.

In reality, its game one with a lot of new players and a bunch of stuff changing. I think its going to be awesome, but teams don't even have their identity game one with the kind of veteran turnover both of these teams have had. Brand new identities need to be forged and this will make a lasting impression on who these teams eventually become.

I hope it's a one sided ass kicking where Texas runs Ohio State out of their own stadium, just like Michigan.
