so how many more years of non-dominant OL play will it take before we realize flood probably needs to be upgraded.

RBs keep going to the league...

It isn't Flood, imo. It's the talent at the OG position and inability to call plays to minimize or overcome the weakness there.

If QB is going under C, someone thinks the OG position is improved.

Did the Purdue kid visit and then pick Oregon?  Or we wanted him to visit and he didn't?

I don't remember.  Would be the 2nd white DB to go along with Taaffe if he had picked us

It all just depends on who you're talking to. If it's someone familiar with the Houston area you'd say the Woodlands. If it's someone who isn't familiar with it at all you'd say Houston because they'd know where that is, but wouldn't have any idea where the Woodlands are.

They do.  Cause they’re talented and good.  Sarks offense and the 11 he puts out are solid enough to allow those skills to shine.

After the 8 games in the SEC regular season, the University of Texas had the highest yards per carry of any SEC team.  It dropped to 3rd after adding the 9th game.  Also keep in mind, our QB was a net negative on that YPC whereas to name a few - Jackson Arnold, Milroe, Pavia, Dart, Nico - other teams QBs were at least positive on the season.  Individually Wisner was #3 in conference games at YPC.

Sometimes we struggle with the rare concept that a player is equally as good at run blocking as they are pass blocking.  I can’t imagine you find that many do pick your preference.  And that displacing a good to great DT is simply not a frequent occurrence.  When you play a UGA or an OSU or a Texas, you simply aren’t going to over power them on the interior too often.  And when you get in the red zone and are playing 9 on 11, it makes that run a bit more difficult.

We may be better at running on the interior, but the truth is Hutson has played enough and has yet to show he’s a better player.

As for going under C, maybe that’s the reason.  Could be the preference of the QB.  Who knows.

I don’t mind the minutiae.  Feels more like how buddies can pop in and out of normal talk with a random memory, story or  thought. For example by buddy and I were talking about the 10yr bond and then on a dime we turned to dildo color odds during WNBA games

One of the cretins on the OTF board said something the other day like "If Littleton is in line for a bunch of playing time, what does that say about the quality of the DB room?".

It was hilarious of course, but it got me thinking that this might be the deepest DB room I've ever seen at Texas. It probably won't be the best, but I don't think you can argue with it being the deepest top to bottom. I did second string already, but I think we could put our third team out there and do alright for ourselves. That would look something like Santana Wilson and Kade Phillips at corner (lol), Filsame and Jonah Williams at safety, and I guess pick one of Mack or Littleton at star, because the other options are McDonald and Taaffe. lulz

As CJ reported on Tuesday, Michael Taaffe sported a green non-contact jersey in practice.

Of note, Taaffe is seeing more and more action at nickel in an effort to get the best five DBs on the field simultaneously. This is at least partially influenced by the fact that Derrick Williams has looked really good in his return from injury.

Remember, Williams was the starter last season ahead of both Jelani McDonald and Andrew Mukuba prior to injury.

**

The fight for the back-up quarterback spot is really heating up.

Matthew Caldwell has brought a level of stability and professionalism to the back-up role that Trey Owens must match.

Owens, as a thrower, has been impressive at times in camp. More impressive than Caldwell in fact.

But Caldwell’s experience is also showing up and catching the attention of coaches. He’s had fewer turnovers while being efficient running the offense.

I still give a slight nod to Caldwell to win the job based on what I am hearing.

However, the first scrimmage comes Saturday. It’ll be a big day for both.

Yet even after the scrimmage, I suspect this will be an ongoing battle throughout the year, especially if Owens doesn’t win it initially.

Owens is the more toolsy QB. But Caldwell’s precision has shown up in the little things, like footwork quickness.

**

I misreported something earlier in the week and need to correct it. Freshman cornerback Kade Phillips is not entirely practicing, at least he wasn’t on Monday.

I’ve been told it has been a hamstring tightness issue.

Perhaps Phillips is back later today, similar to wide receiver Ryan Wingo, who has been at practice this week but just not full go.

**

Why so long for Wingo to return?

We’ve told everyone repeatedly that Wingo was dehydrated after last Wednesday’s practice.

Before folks say, well, he shouldn’t be out for that long over dehydration, it’s important to note that Wingo was briefly hospitalized from it. So coaches and trainers were in no rush to get him back unnecessarily.

He’s been out there with the team in the interim, just not full go.

Sark said he is expected back fully at this morning’s practice.

**

One freshman we have not mentioned much to this point is Smith Orogbo.

But his name came up in a conversation on Tuesday.

Orogbo, after recovering from surgery during the spring, has shown some real glimpses early in training camp of why they recruited him in the first place.

He’s got long arms and surprising suddenness in a short area. He has some work to do in the weight room, but there are some who believe he could be a real player for Texas in the long term.

**

Outside of Tre Wisner, the RB role is a bit of a crapshoot right now.

Yes, CJ Baxter has looked promising but there are still low expectations for him early in the season.

One of Christian Clark, Jerrick Gibson and James Simon need to separate in the coming weeks. Clark is currently running ahead of the other two.

Clark may fit the offense the best and be the one most ready to go. But he had a couple of fumbles over the weekend, too.

**

Based on feedback, the Texas tight end room has looked very good and is particularly versatile.

  • D. Williams looks good back from his knee injury.
  • While Owens is more talented than Caldwell, Caldwell is forcing Owens to improve his leadership and professionalism to earn the backup QB spot, which may not happen at first, or at all, this season.
  • Kade Phillips dealing with hamstring tightness.
  • Wingo's dehydration last Wednesday - he was briefly hospitalized, likely for intravenous fluid therapy and observation. Like some of us said earlier this week, this shit can turn serious fast and no one is going to take chances. Also, this is another situation where "personal issue" meant "medical issue." File that away for when OTF uses it next time. Regardless, he's supposed to back at it today.
  • Tre Wisner is a known commodity. Coaches are waiting for one of Clark, Gibson, or Simon to separate from the pack for RB3 (RB2 early in the season as Baxter preps to return).
  • Coaches are gruntled by the TE room.

TBD until we see results on the field, but Emaree Winston has to be one of the most surprising recruits in a while. We were all completely ambivalent as to whether he ended up in the class. Early returns on him and Townsend are great to hear given where we're at in the 2026 class. On the other hand, reading between the lines on Lockett/Ffrench, it sounds a bit concerning. Bobby/Gerry didn't talk about them as instant contributors during the recruiting process, but you'd like to hear better things from recruits of their stature. Particularly because the seem to be well behind McCutcheon and it's not like they're hyping him up as a future Day One draft pick. I'd trade all three of those guys for DK Moore.

I'm not 2 worried at Lockett/Ffrench. McCutcheon received the same really good WR coaching as Livingstone that most HS players don't get. Also, in a similar scheme to Sark's. He should be expected to be ahead of others. He also seems like a smart guy. The same could be said about Mosley's background. He's from Stanford and his parents went to ND. Smart and able to learn quickly were certainly expected. Lockett/Ffrench are certainly not lacking athletic talent. When they catch up knowledge wise they will be fine. But that also includes having the patience to wait their turn and not hitting the road if they don't start their Freshman year.

I'd add Michael Terry in there, who never played WR in high school. I'm really excited about him long term.

Terry absolutely played some WR in high school. I’ve posted about it before but I watched him in his last high school game. I don’t know if I was misreading things, if he’s truly a bad apple, or if he was just fed-up being 1 of 2 players having to carry a subpar team deep into the playoffs but I was not impressed at all with his body language, demeanor, or leadership. I don’t think I’d count on him lasting at Texas.
