When I was a kid I lived at Astroworld. I'd get a season pass and then a bunch of Moms would take turns carpooling about 4 of us before the theme park opened and then pick us up after it closed. I didn't go every day, but I went a bunch. There's only so many times you can ride the same rides, and pretend like you're picking up girls who live on the other side of Houston that you will never see again, before a bit of hijinks ensues.

I had several favorite pranks I'd pull. There were two sets of cars on their own tracks on opposite sides of the theme park. You rode them around on a cement track with a metal guard rail in the middle so you couldn't drive it off the track. There was one pedal, which you pressed to make it go, but if you let your foot off completely it didn't coast to a stop. It braked. It's amazing to me those things basically burned fuel all day long because they were never turned off, but different time. One set was a convertible sports coup. The other was a model T style.

In any case, we'd get in one of the cars, drive about midway around the track, jump out and clamber over the chainlink fence. Then we'd run around a corner and peek back. Invariably, people would see us get out of the car and jump over the fence, but they wouldn't know what to do about it. So they'd sit there. Over a short period of time the cars would stack up not going anywhere behind the vehicle we abandoned. Eventually one of the underpaid teenagers manning the ride would wonder why isn't anyone going? Look around, see the abandoned car in the middle of the track, and have to run over there to drive it around so everyone else could enjoy the ride. I would laugh my ass off that no one would get out of their car and just go drive it around themselves because they didn't want to break the rules.

There was also a fake mountain in the middle of the theme park. The idea of it was to have something that sort of emulated the famous Disney castle, that would be a landmark for the theme park as a whole. Only, Astroworld didn't have as much capital to spend as Disney, of course, so it was done on the cheap. There was a ride inside called the Alpine Sleigh Ride, which was ostensibly a roller coaster, but not really. They had some cheap animatronics that were few and far between that you could look at as the ride lazily went around the mountain. The appeal wasn't the ride, which was terrible. The appeal was the supercharged air conditioning in an attempt to emulate a swiss mountain. So people would ride it to get a break from the overwhelming Houston heat.

Well, since the ride wasn't exactly dangerous, and wasn't really all that popular other than the aforementioned reason, security could be a bit lax. You weren't exactly fastened in. So we'd clamber out of the car halfway through the ride, and spend the next little bit jumping out from behind corners to scare the ever living shit out of people who were on the ride. Then we'd get into an empty car and ride it back down. You'd think we would have gotten caught after dozens of times doing this, but worker morale wasn't exactly top notch. They just didn't seem to care as long as we didn't hurt anyone.

Fast forward a decade later. I'm serving in the Navy in San Diego. I convince some other sailors that it would be fun to go to Disneyland. I don't know how I did it necessarily, but I convinced 3 other guys to take the road trip to Los Angeles. While I understood the dynamics of Disneyland as a business venture, and that Disney had made a mistake in announcing the project so that third party developers bought all the land around Disneyland and locked it into a smaller footprint, I didn't really get what that meant. Disney didn't have enough land to keep adding rides. Any new ride they installed, they had to take one out. What this meant eventually is that they had to focus on a demographic, and the demographic they chose was the pre teens, It's a Small World animatronic type rides. We had smuggled a lot of booze in to the park and then mixed it with coke, so we were pretty sloshed and bored out of our minds. This is before the movies came out, so I had to convince my sailor buddies about this iconic ride we had to go on called Pirates of the Caribbean. It's still more of the same, but midway through I decide I'd relive my Astroworld glory days, and clamber out on the stage and start drunkenly dancing among all the robots.

In case you weren't aware, even back in the 90s Disney's security protocols are a mite more stringent than Astroworlds.

I immediately hear this voice of God cracking down on me, "Get back in the boat!" I scurried over properly chastened and leaped back into my seat. My friends and I were looking at each other thinking, "we're cooked now." As the ride is coming out of the tunnel heading towards the exit, I can see a phalanx of security personnel waiting. I have a feeling they might be there for me. So I look around at my friends and tell them, "See you guys later," climb over the brick wall next to us, and take off.

A short while later I see my friends running around the corner laughing, "They thought it was the people ahead of us! They were excitedly pointing at us and we just ran!"

Ah, different times. Can't get away with that kind of stuff any more, that's for sure.

I just find their ratings to be askew with CBs more than anyone. I’ll have watch guys, see them get picked on, and then they’ve got a higher grade than the CB on the opposite side of the field who the opposing team was avoiding like the plague. If memory serves, the returning starting CB for Ohio State had a higher grade last year than his drafted counterpart and the dude returning was holding/PI machine who was almost always in danger of getting burnt.

Davison Igbinosun. Was exactly the same at Ole Miss. Was a penalty machine who was constantly picked on and somehow that got him a transfer to tOSU and a title ring.

Dude must be doing something right, but it's hard to see what it is.

Speaking on Stroh, based off the pic it looks like playing left guard, gonna assume it’s a hand off. He either stepped with the wrong foot or had zero chance from the start. Because if the DT is in a 3 Tech at worst he could’ve washed him down the line. But if he’s playing right guard and that’s a 1 tech or nose shade. Stroh might be fucking lost

It was a huge waste of Earl Campbell's talent. Instead of lining him up 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage with a lead blocker allowing him to get a full head of steam, he was lined up a yard or two behind the quarterback and sent into the interior of the line.

It was a huge waste of talent. Earl "ran like a deer" when he got to Texas, but they bulked him up to play FB in the Wishbone.  He was still quick, but not as fast.

Sometimes, Earl got to the line so fast, he took a hard turn parallel to the LOS, because there wasn't a crease in front of him. Two big reasons he never should have been a FB.

If I remember correctly, Earl sometimes ran as a wishbone halfback when Roosevelt Leaks was in the game.

There’s a new Anthony Hill Mic’d up clip on Instagram. Two take aways. Hill blasted Wisner in pass protection, but Wisner stayed in front of him somehow. That was cool. Stroh had a terrible rep at Guard on a goaline situation, someone just tossed his ass.

I liked Hill shit talking Wisner some "Don't hold me!".

Sorry to divert from the Disney talk but this triggered me. I remember going to see UT play UH in the Astrodome in 1983. UT won 9-3 and I was never so pissed after a win in my life. Mossey Cade intercepted a pass and returned it to the UH 1 yard line, you guessed it, FG. Walking out of the stadium I remember seeing UT's total yards for the game was 90 something. It was embarrassing.

After the 1984-1989 stretch I decided I'd never again be mad after a win.

I was at that game, too. My Dad and I weren't very happy about that game, neither, but we'd both come to expect shitty experiences when playing Cougar High.

Yes, he’s playing LG.  Yes, it’s a handoff with Gibson going off Strohs right hip.  It is not a wide angle shot so you can’t see much.  The DT didn’t make the play on the RB and not sure he even negatively impacted him.  My initial thought is that the block was effective even if ugly with the DT trying to cut backside rather than fight thru.  But too many unknowns based on the limited view.

If the DT was a 2 tech then I guess that’s the best case scenario when getting beat. But then I have concerns about the DT trying to shoot the B gap when head up with the Guard lol if it’s a zone concept though and that’s a 3 tech Strohs job is to block out. He failed, his head and body are going the complete opposite direction of where it should be going. That’s why I thought it was a misstep. May not matter here but if he sees meaningful time. It’s something to keep an eye on.

No hostility here btw I was just a former O-Linemen and I picked what I saw in the close up lol wide view would certainly help matters but oh well

No hostility here either.  Just talking football.  I was too talented to ever play Oline.  Just joking - sorta.  But I do appreciate you guys.  I don’t know the footwork aspect of the line so any aspect of that is appreciated.

And I looked at it again and can’t determine jack.  Robertson is blocking right although not really engaged.  No one blocks Hill.  It looks as though the DT is inside Stroh but can’t exactly tell which way he wants to take him because Gibsons desired path isn’t totally clear.

You can only see 3-4 guys in the clip at a time.  Caldwell, Robertson, Stroh and Gibson then Brevard and Hill so it looks like they’re going against the 1/1b defense.  Probably crappy O across the board.

Thursday

With the football season about to start, that means it’s nearing unofficial visit time in the recruiting world.

Yesterday alone, there were comments about Texas commitment Derrek Cooper potentially visiting Miami and the Hurricanes not giving up, and another regarding A&M commitment KJ Edwards and his interest in attending a LSU and Texas game.

Here’s what I can tell you:

When it comes to the running back position, the Longhorns’ pursuit of Cooper is singular. Texas is all in on Cooper.

Texas feels good about its position with Cooper, too. He will visit this fall for at least one game. And remember, he has an official visit to Texas still available.

As for Edwards, him wanting to visit Texas is one thing. Texas pursuing him is another.

As I said, Texas running back recruiting is currently a singular pursuit of Cooper. And the Horns will take only one.

More than anything, Texas is focused on not taking its proverbial eye off the ball with Cooper.

**

Speaking of recruiting, it looks like the Sam Houston State game is lining up as the first big weekend the Horns are pushing for recruits to come to campus.

While there could be an uncommitted 2026 player or two, the visit list will be primarily composed of 2027s, 2028s and beyond.

**

The scrimmage this Saturday will be fundamentally different than last Saturday.

This week, it will be an actual, true scrimmage, at least through the first part.

That means no free substituting play by play, the defense must react to what the offense is doing pre-snap in real time, and there should be no quick whistles.

One of the goals of the second scrimmage is to make it feel more like a game and less like an exercise. Last week, while they scrimmaged, it was more of an exercise.

Now, there’s still immense value in that exercise. But this week is, as Steve Sarkisian has said, where he and his staff start to make some hard decisions, both in personnel and of future strategy based off of that personnel.

**

Given those upcoming decisions, here are the spots we’re watching closely:

- Back-up QB (Caldwell or Owens; engineering drives of 13 and 16 plays in the last scrimmage puts the onus on Owens to match)

- Tight end rotation (Washington is making a move; will it be a subtle one or will he displace Shannon in the process?)

- Nickel rotation (Taaffe and McDonald will see a lot of action there, but just how much will Littleton and Mack? They need to have good scrimmages to assert themselves.)

- Corner opposite Muhammad (Guilbeau is thought to be the leader in the clubhouse but just how much time Black gets early in the season, especially against Ohio State, could be determined by his play this weekend.)

**

Texas practices today and tomorrow before the scrimmage on Saturday. They were off yesterday.

Hook’Em!

I hope Washington displaces Shannon. We pay in 12 personnel so much.  Juan Davis was sub replacement level at receiving and blocking last year.  It hurt our offense.  I fear more of the same with Shannon if he is TE 2.

Washington passing Shannon has seemed preordained to me. Were it not for Washington missing the spring, I doubt it would have to be a thing. That said, I don’t think they’re bullshitting us about Shannon being a good blocker. If they play him in situations, they’re doing it because they want to, versus having to do so.

That's good to note.  Because Davis was an awful blocker.

I would love Washington to supplant him, but it been a long time since Texas had a solid blocker at TE. It has been an issue in blocking for most of Sark's tenure. More focused with finding a capable blocker at TE to match with Endries. Not too worried about pass catching.

Much rather have a highly capable blocker at TE to balance Endries with. Shannon can catch too, he just isn’t as athletic as Washington

No clue how good of a blocker Washington is.

Do you know Shannon can catch from his extended gametime and targets over his Texas career?

Hasn’t physicality been the knock on Shannon up to this point? Like he’s a huge, fairly athletic guy but not a strong blocker?

There were 9.95 reports of him having decent hands, or being more than a blocker, which gets you a ham sandwich.

Story time! When I was a kid circa 1990 we were on vacation, and a Texas football player was house sitting for us. Well he invited half the team over to watch a Mike Tyson fight PPV. Lance Gunn shows up and goes to the wrong house. "Is this where the fight is?" All 6'4, 220 of him and bald. Evidently our neighbor slammed the door in his face.

I’ve known Lance since his freshman year.  One of the nicest people you will ever meet.

He bleeds orange and was at the Sugar Bowl party at Mannings.

Just How Dangerous Might the 3rd Down Defense Be? (Thursday)

Texas' 3rd Down Pass Rush Taking the Next Step

When you have a top-5 defense in the country, not often do you find many areas of true weakness. In fact, many parts of your defense would be considered strengths.

Taking a deeper look into third downs and what might the personnel groupings on obvious passing situations might be, I can not help but think the Longhorns' could have one of the best packages for third downs in all of the country. Before getting into reasons why that may be, let's look back at the 3rd down conversion percentages since Pete Kwiatkowski arrived as the Longhorn defensive coordinator.

  • 2021: 42.35% (94th)
  • 2022: 41.31% (88th)
  • 2023: 25.99% (1st)
  • 2024: 31.72% (7th)

That is quite the leap. Considering the expectations of the defense, the returning production from a year ago and expected impact from new additions, the Longhorns should remain in, or near, the top-10 of these defensive third down attempts.

***

Exploring the NASCAR Package

Pick your poison for who you might see on the field in obvious third down situations. We will get to see the NASCAR package immediately in 2025 with the rematch of Ohio State likely to bring plenty of tricks out of the bag of the Longhorns early on in the season.

Last year in the opener against Colorado State, we saw a sneak peak of what became one of the Longhorns' best defensive personnel packages of the season.

Screenshot2025-08-14at9_16_20AM.thumb.png.0beb3de0d668c4bc5afe96ebde13c4f4.png

The question this year becomes who fills the roles of the departed players?

My best guess for the NASCAR package in 2025 is as follows:

nascarproj25.thumb.jpg.1ff2eb882e3e1812776ff8f67e0129bf.jpg

Filling the roles of the 2024 package, I like the look of this unit. The interesting part of this will be how does Texas utilize the linebacking position next to Anthony Hill Jr. Do they go with another pass rushing threat like Trey Moore, or a guy who plays very well in space like TyAnthony Smith?

Remains to be seen, but the versatility of the unit is there.

***

That 3rd Down Blitz

This was what really inspired the entire conversation about third downs. Especially third and longs.

I was rewatching Colin Simmons' sacks from 2025 and couldn't help but notice a recurring theme. I'll display where his sacks occurred in 2024, then let you answer what the general theme is:

  • Sack 1: 1st & 10 .
  • Sack 2: 3rd & 8
  • Sack 3: 3rd & 18
  • Sack 4: 1st & 10 ... FF vs. Miss State
  • Sack 5: 3rd & 22
  • Sack 6: 3rd & 17
  • Sack 7: 1st & 10 ... FF vs. Kentucky
  • Sack 8: 3rd & 10 ... FF vs. Georgia
  • Sack 9: 3rd & 8

If your guess was third downs, you got yourself a smart noodle. Six of Simmons' nine sacks from a year ago came on third and longs, otherwise in that NASCAR package.

What is interesting here, is the addition of Anthony Hill Jr. in this conversation gives you a look at the aggression Texas has when deploying both Simmons and Hill in pass rushing situations. Again, favorable and heavy passing downs, you get both Simmons and Hill coming after the quarterback.

  • Sack 1: 2nd & 12
  • Sack 2: 4th & 12
  • Sack 3: 1st & 10 vs. Miss State
  • Sack 4: 1st & 20 vs. OU
  • Sack 5: 3rd & 20 vs. OU
  • Sack 6: 1st & 10 vs. UGA
  • Sack 7: 1st & 10 vs. UK
  • Sack 8: 3rd & Goal vs. UK

***

All together, the average distance to the sticks for Simmons on his sacks is 12.5 yards, where for Hill is 12.1. Texas wins first down, and it puts so much pressure on opposing quarterbacks and offensive coordinators to get into third down and reasonable, otherwise the drive ends and the Longhorn offense is back on the field.

It’s not a big deal but would like some clarity on the NASCAR package.  I saw the write-up on OTF but didn’t clarify it.

Here it says at least 3 Edge guys.  On OTF, it showed last year having a 6th DB instead of s 2nd LB.  They also drew up a theoretical with only 5 DBs.  I had thought the 6th DB was part the package.

Does it require the 6th DB?

All you really need to understand is the DE aspect of it, man. It's fast people to bum rush the passer and DBs/LBs. What is behind the main rushers is dependent on the opponent, matchup, and down and distance.

No. It is just really about the DL. Made famous from Spagnola and the Giants, when he would put 4 DEs on the defensive line. Think Babers uses it for 3 DEs and a DT. Basically just a pass rushing personnel  package.

He also tied for 1st in most Pass Interference penalties in the NFL last year.

Washington might be the key to unlocking the offense given Arch and the line are good. Being able to go 12 personnel and punish teams that go nickel with the run,  then punish them with the pass when they go big up front to stop the run. That requires the 2nd TE to be able to block on the end of the line against nickel and beat a LB in coverage against a big front. He and Endries are the only ones that can possibly do both, but Endries is a probably bit light to be blocking in line. Unless his technique is flawless.
