Good thing that play wasn’t a punt return. He’d have grabbed it and ran backwards out of the endzone in his endless quest just to feel alive.

And here I thought you knew the rules of football.

You guys should go watch some Trey Moore UTSA tape if you’re concerned about him as an off the ball linebacker. He basically played outside linebacker there and looked comfortable in space. Texas doesn’t really ask their LBs to carry guys across the field in coverage anyways, it’s more of a match style coverage. Nansen had produced many ILBs who record high sack numbers.

Just don't do it if there is less than 5 to go.  Roughing is pretty rare.  They call running into a lot.

Damn, 18.2 career return average on punts without housing one.  That has to be some sort of record for a guy who has returned punts for two years.  Would have been an outstanding pickup.

Every $9.95er update since like April has been essentially “every single player on the team looks like an All-American”. Yet I don’t remember a single blurb about Baker. Now we’ve got chatter that a true freshman could win that job. They’re clearly not satisfied with the guy.

I have a similar suspicion with kicking. We brought in Shipley hoping he'd resurrect our kicking game, but so far all we've heard is that he's in a "battle" with our fucking kickoff specialist Will Stone for the job.

I suspect FG kicking will be substandard and unreliable again this season.

The holder gets a bad snap and the ball bounces up to the kicker. The GBall defenders are coming at him in full force.  He panics and starts running in the opposite direction. At around the 50, he just throws the ball behind his back, while running full speed towards the GBall end zone, at the GBall defenders. One of them picks it and houses it. Funniest shit on a football field I’d scene since earlier in the same game when Casey Hampton threw our center at our QB for a strip sack and fumble TD return.

We're getting to the point where you're going to have to stop criticizing my spelling and posting behavior. You have a head injury this week or something?

Now we have a brand new corner, and no one is replacing Barron, at least not next year, and certainly not at the beginning of the year. That motherfucker blew up blocks in the screen game to make TFL and locked down his guy, pretty much all the time. CB is a concern, and the secondary in general as Barron allowed are safeties to do a lot more shit.

... 😄

Kidding aside, Barron is the kind of player that makes a bad coach look good. He's the total package -- athletic, smart and driven. He spent a lot of time watching film to refine his technique and play recognition. We can only hope the example he set was infectious.

Didn't he arrive in the Summer? How can there be an ongoing "battle" when you typed this before his first practice is over?

Why are we worried about returning punts this year?  It should be turnover or bust on defense.

Nope. Akina was the guy behind the "here's how to blow up the 'shield' in front of the punter" stuff that was so much fun to watch that year.

Yeah, I don't think it's worth the risk.  The refs have itchy trigger fingers when it comes to any contact with the punter.  Going for the block 10 times feels like it results in 3-4 drive extending penalties while getting 1 block if you're lucky.

Y'all are a bunch of wussies. You forget how much fun it was averaging a punt block per game.

It was and maybe Akina can help get the punt coverage team back to that level.  Currently, it's not worth it and I also don't think they threw anywhere near as many flags back then.  If you don't block the ball and breath on the punter while running by it gets a 5 yard flag now.

Fuck me for responding to who I am responding to, but y'all should know that "in a battle with..." is routinely used as:

  1. a way to appeal to current roster members by not simply handing a job to a transfer, even if the entire intent is to have the transfer start. Similar language was just used with Endries about not yet running with the ones even though he's going to be the starting TE. It's oftentimes just a smoke show not to piss off the roster or breed entitlement and/or generate a lack of effort for the new guy.
  2. a public form of motivation for guys to step up (whether it be the incumbent starter, young, or new player)

We see this shit every year.

Before the First Practice (Gerry)

Spoiler

Before the first practice ...

Gerry Hamilton

Before the first practice ...

The Texas Longhorns will take the field for the first practice of the 2025 season in three hours. Before Steve Sarkisian blows the whistle for the first time this season, I thought about some categories that the OTF community may like to sound off on.

First player to arrive at practice (non specialist) ...

Two seasons ago, Jordan Whittington and Xavier Worthy were first to practice every day media was allowed to be at a practice viewing.

Last year, it was DeAndre Moore Jr.

This year, I'm going with a trio of DeAndre Moore Jr., Emmett Mosley and Arch Manning.

Most important player in 2025 ...

Arch Manning, period. The question I have with Arch Manning may ultimately determine the ceiling for Texas in 2025.

If Arch truly looks like a future first round pick: Texas will be in the playoff, without question. Whether that is 11-1 or 10-2.

If he looks like he's a year away from being a true first round level selection: 10-2 or 9-3, and a fight to get in the playoff is possible.

If Arch looks like the future 1st overall pick of the draft: Texas will play for all the marbles.

Longhorns that will make the biggest year two jump ...

DL Alex January ... will play to the level that moves him into the "three and out potential" category.

RT Brandon Baker favorite to win the right tackle job, and a future NFL draft pick. (Gerry's not down on Baker...)

OG Nate Kibble ... had a terrific redshirt year. Backed it up with impressive spring. Question here is will be the third guard, and thus backup at both RG and LG.

N Wardell Mack ... his development in however many snaps he gets will be key in 2026 and 2027.

Very important, yet underrated addition to the team ...

Punter Jack Bouwmeester. The addition of an experienced punter than will be in a NFL training camp a year from now is the easy answer for me. A top tier defense can go to the next level with a punter that can flip the field, pin opponents inside the 10 (not 20), help place the defense in the best positions to help maximize capabilities and apply the most pressure to an offense possible.

First year starter that will beat the expectations ...

Left guard Neto Umeozulu. And the run game will improve because of it. (this would sure be nice)

Culture warrior ...

Ryan Niblett. He will impact winning in some way this season. Culture warriors are very important to winning programs, and the coaching staff.

Position Texas has to have good injury luck in 2025 ...

Offensive tackle. Position is too green in terms of game experience to sustain long lasting injuries this season.

Most important hash mark in 2025 ...

Right hash. Enter Mason Shipley.

Mr. Reliable, and the up and comer ...

Junior linebacker Liona Lefau and sophomore linebacker TyAnthony Smith. Or Lefau can also be referred to as steady Eddie. When Steve Sarkisian recently called Smith a "budding star", that was. key mental note taken. Doesn't come as a surprise, but more proof of what the sophomore from Jasper High is about to become for the team.

Westlake EDGE tandem ...

Senior Ethan Burke and RS sophomore Colton Vasek have an underrated job this season. Barryn Sorrell was as consistent performer as the Longhorns have had in the Sarkisian era.

I don't need no stinkin' spring practice ...

Tight end Nick Townsend will play this season. Just too talented to keep off the field in some capacity.

First off the bus ...

Justus Terry, hands down. No need to write a 'graph on this one.

Freshman will impact winning in different ways this season ...

N/DB Graceson Littleton

LB Elijah Barnes ... could be a key on special teams in 2025.

S Jonah Williams ... watching return game here as the season moves along.

Will flash in 2025, but biggest impact is 2026 and 2027 ...

EDGE Lance Jackson

DL Myron Charles

DL Josiah Sharma

RB James Simon

WR Daylan McCutcheon

WR Kaliq Lockett

WR Jaime Ffrench

Probably not this year, but remember my name in the future ...

QB K.J. Lacey ... has really impressed since arriving.

WR/ATH Michael Terry III ... needs time to develop.

EDGE Smith Orogbo ... that first and second step will show up when the frame is ready.

Level of Comfortability Entering Fall Camp (Wed. AM)

Level of Position Comfortability on Day One of Fall Camp

As simple a breakdown as the title would insist.

Quarterback: 9/10

If 2024 was a total 10, then the 2025 season comes in just a tick below. The addition of Matthew Caldwell figures to be one the staff likes behind the scenes and will push the QB2 battle throughout camp. Arch Manning remains healthy and all is well for the 2025 season.

Running Back: 8/10

Quintrevion Wisner is RB1 entering camp for the Texas Longhorns. The SEC's only returning 1,000 yard rusher will get first team duties as the return for CJ Baxter inches closer and closer. Fortunately, there is a significant increase in capable bodies in 2025 with Christian Clark returning, James Simon entering the fold and Jerrick Gibson moving into year two.

Wide Receiver: 8/10

Right now, the group at wide receiver sits at four – Wingo/Moore/Livingstone/Mosley. Who else joins that group is going to determine the ultimate ceiling of this unit in 2025. It is very solid at the moment, but at some point, someone will get dinged up and it would be ideal if there was a seamless transition into that next man up, who I figure to be a freshmen.

Tight End: 9.5/10

This is as versatile and deep a tight end room the Texas staff has had in Austin since arriving in Austin. With this room, Texas checks the vertical passing box and the in-line blocking box without having to sacrifice the other. Between Jack Endries, Jordan Washington, Nick Townsend, Spencer Shannon and Emaree Winston, the Texas TE room will be significantly more versatile than previous years.

Offensive Line: 7/10

This isn't a concern, just more an unknown. I will continue to bang the drum that the older your offensive line is, the better off you typically are to enter a season. Now, we will see if that holds true, but the three 4th-year guys on the interior provides a solid floor for this unit. There will be a competition at right tackle, but Brandon Baker enters camp as the guy in pole position. Cohesiveness is the key and I would love to see the unit displace the defensive line more often in the run game than what we saw in the spring.

EDGE Room: 10/10

The most talented room in the facility has arguably more depth than anyone else as well. Between Colin Simmons, Ethan Burke, Colton Vasek, Zina Umeozulu and now Brad Spence, there are so many different weapons here. Add in a Lance Jackson and Justus Terry, and there should not be a drop off in production or talent regardless of personnel on the field.

Defensive Line: 8/10

Much like the wide receiver room, I feel solid about the pieces in the room, I just want to see it in action. The five portal additions are led by Cole Brevard and Maraad Watson. By all accounts, Alex January is going to join those two to round out the top three on the DL. Fortunately, Texas has plenty of pieces to find its rotation and two very hungry true freshman chomping at the bit to get on the field.

Linebacker: 9.5/10

Whether Texas is facing a team that grounds and pounds, or spreads out the field and flings it all over the place, they will possess the necessary personnel to matchup well with anyone. Led by one of the country's best in Anthony Hill Jr., there is plenty of optimism with Ty'Anthony Smith being a larger piece of the Texas defense. And Trey Moore's versatility will be something that factors into a strength as well.

Cornerback: 8.5/10

Malik Muhammad has one of the cornerback spots on lock entering the fall, which means all eyes go to the opposite side of the field and who can win that job outright before August 30. There are four names in the conversation – Jaylon Guilbeau, Kobe Black, Warren Roberson and Kade Phillips. We will see how this plays out, but right now, there are plenty of options.

Safety: 9/10

It always helps when you return a 2nd Team All-American to lead your secondary and Texas is fortunate enough to do just that with Michael Taaffe. Jelani McDonald is a fan favorite pick for breakout candidate of the year in 2025 and the return of Derek Williams Jr. provides that sure-fire centerfielder. Will Jonah Williams jump JJR or Xavier Filsaime? We will see, both are jockeying for that 4th spot in the room currently.

Special Teams: 7.5/10

Getting older in the kicking and punting game was a clear priority for Jeff Banks this offseason, yet questions remain in the return game. Will Texas have a game-changing returnman? Based off what I believe the strengths of those named by the Texas special teams coordinator on Tuesday, my expectation is probably not. Yet, still, the coverage units should be improved and the place kicking simply can't get worse than a year ago.

The stupid thing is that the roughing the kicker penalty against ASU shouldn't have been called. The punter loses his rule book protections if he leaves the tackle box. The ASU punter was well outside of the box.

Yes he was.  We also put our best athletes on the punt block team.  I remember Roy Williams getting a couple.

I don't mind going for blocks if it is more than 5 yards to go.  I don't like extending drives with running into the punter.  Especially against douchey times like OU who always seem to have a punter who flops.

punt blocking is a unique skill like saving penalties in soccer

the technique to avoid kicker simulation (flops) is totally different for outside speed rushers v. inside leapers

i would hope we have a dedicated assistant coaching specialist on this

Spoiler

Just in case you missed it, there were two major notes that emerged from yesterday:

- Michael Taaffe has spent some of summer working at nickel. If Taaffe somehow wins that job, it would allow Texas to have starting experience at every single secondary position, albeit a couple in new spots.

Manny Muhammad and Jaylan Guilbeau at corner. Derrick Williams and Jelani McDonald at safety. Taaffe at nickel.

We spent a lot of off-season wondering what Texas might do in the secondary, how all the pieces might fit to maximum effect.

Well, this is one permutation that, if it works, would be huge for “experience” in the secondary.

Granted, I think it’s a tall order for Taaffe. Asking him to match with players who are oftentimes the quickest on the other team’s roster may be too much.

But Texas is ready to give him a shot.

- LaAllen Clark, the Texas edge coach, revealed yesterday that Arkansas transfer Brad Spence had moved full time to edge.

Spence was in a crowded linebacker group that included returning starters Liona Lefau and Anthony Hills, as well as Trey Moore and Ty’Anthony Smith.

The move gives Spence a direct path to the field, either as a rotational player behind Colin Simmons and/or as a pash rush specialist. It also creates depth at edge, where both Zina Umeozulu and Colton Vasek and freshmen Lance Jackson and Justus Terry are backups.

We’ve been told all spring and summer that Texas wanted to make sure they found a way to get Spence on the field more. This appears to be their solution.

**

Some other takeaways from yesterday:

- Texas has a very strong staff overall. From the quiet confidence of Pete Kwiatkowski and his plain-spoken explanation of how Steve Sarkisian has managed to keep all of his coordinators in place since his arrival to the straight-forward discussions of position coaches Chris Jackson and Kenny Baker, it’s clear to me that Sark has amassed a collection of good, clear communicators with clear and straight-forward expectations.

The group also represents an eclectic mix of ages and backgrounds.

Bottom line, I think this coaching staff rivals any a Texas coach has ever assembled. I know those are large words for some of you who have followed Texas football through the years, but I firmly believe it.

- As Jeff Howe noted in a separate article, Jeff Banks discussed that Texas would likely be a more aggressive punt block unit in 2025.

I have to wonder exactly why.

Is it the lack of an elite punt returner? Or is it a lack of elite outside blockers/gunners to keep the punt returner clean?

At any rate, the idea as a whole is something to register prior to the season.

- Kyle Flood stated clearly that the right tackle job is up for grabs. As expected, Brandon Baker and Andre Cojoe are the two who will battle it out. Let’s see how that plays out and whether or not freshman Nick Brooks gets a shot there, too.

Flood also singled out another freshman, Jackson Christian. IMO it’s an early sign that we could see Christian and Nate Kibble being long term (in a year or two) solutions for Texas somewhere along the offensive front.

**

Practice is here.

Can’t wait!

What’s funny is that I thought Shaw would be the bell cow of our DT transfers.

I was hoping for this as well based on his five-star/top 10 prospect pedigree and his very obvious overall talent level. I figured that those things combined with Baker's development skills would create a monster DT - but the more I think about it, the more it seems like it's probably not going to happen. It sounds like his injury was even worse than originally thought and he had a more bad weight to lose than expected. Unfortunately, I think that, despite the apparent rise in play quality during his last little bit at UNC, he still has a long, long way to go.

I really hope that I wind up being wrong about this but it seems like a long shot. However, if Maraad Watson and Brevard wind up being as good as advertised (and Kanu the boatload of absurdly talented freshmen develop well), I don't think it will matter much. Fingers crossed for Shaw, though. Him having some kind of Broughton-like awakening would be a game changer

This is true, but Kicking has been an issue for a singular year (1st year it has been sub 80% under Sark/Banks). The 45-55 discussion is just a distraction. Having a kicker that is reliable outside of 45 yards in college is a luxury. Texas has been lucky in that regard.

Here is the emotionally crushing final three minutes, including the 'Horn's Down' sign from the Beavers following the loss.

This is true, but Kicking has been an issue for a singular year (1st year it has been sub 80% under Sark/Banks). The 45-55 discussion is just a distraction. Having a kicker that is reliable outside of 45 yards in college is a luxury. Texas has been lucky in that regard.

Redzone scoring percentage:

2021: 4th (Sark's first year)

2022: 19th

2023: 80th

2024: 101st

not a great trend

TD% in redzone

2021: 4th

2022: 65th

2023: 120th

2024: 54th

not quite the same linear trend, but ugly none the less.

All this comment says to me is that "red zone scoring percentage" expressed as a ranking is not a useful metric for evaluating an offense.

Would you rather have Texas' offense from 2021 / 2022, or Texas' offense from 2023 / 2024? I know which one I prefer.

If the data tells you something useful then it's great. If it tells you something you know to be bullshit, then it's just more noise.

To be clear what I meant by this. We are talking about practice. And I am so fucking excited I almost can't control myself.

This is just comparison in one facet, not overall. It it tells you Texas is struggling in the redzone. I assumed most would look at the numbers and just say they confirm what their eyes have told them, but it is the internet, so someone needs to argue.  Unfortunately, BCF Toys is down, so this is the best I could of stats.

Yep. In and of itself, red zone scoring percentage seems like a good indicator of offensive success. However, what’s the sample size? Whats the team’s explosive play TD percentage? Shit, was even was their overall record?

Appears to be highly spurious data, to me. Something, something… shark attacks and ice cream cones, my man.
