I saw it the other day, and I enjoyed the technical effects, but the story was meh. Like others said, the first 2/3 were somewhat intriguing, but the last battle was like a remix of Avatar 2 scenes. I don't understand why they would do that, it felt lazy and cheap. I expected this one to feature a volcano, lava, some desolate landscape in another part of the planet with its own natural obstacles and problems for the Navi to... well navigate. No clue why they cheaped out and recycled a bunch of stuff from before. We already went through the flying dragons in the floating islands and explored the ocean in depth last time, why are they focusing on that stuff again? That's where the movie really lost my interest, the previous installments felt fresh, vibrant, magical and new, I wanted to see every corner of this planet. Nothing in Fire and Ash really felt new, except the other tribe, who weren't as pivotal to the plot as they should have been.

My biggest complaint too. Though I guess if 2 and 3 were supposed to be one movie, that’s why 3 isn’t have a new biome. It’s more like Avatar 2, part 2

Yeah, I saw that explanation too, but then why even make 3 at all? It's been done in the previous movie. If this were like movie 5 or something, it would have made more sense, but it being so quickly after 2 makes it feel like a mistake. 2 felt complete at the end of the movie, I didn't even think there would be a pseudo-Avatar 2.5 or whatever this was. Continuing the Spider storyline is fine, but it didn't have to be more water-focused landscapes, they could have kept most of the story the same, even with the flying whales and developed a whole new biome on the other side of the planet.

Bro, did the kids say bro in this movie a lot like they did in part 2, bro?

I asked Google's Gemini AI, and the results might surprise you...

Bro, people around the world love these movies, cuz.

Here’s hoping we get the sequels then. I took my middle-schooler to an IMAX 3D screening (theater one at Barton Creek AMC is absolute trash, avoid Barton Creek AMC) after he watched the first two the previous week at home and he absolutely loved them.

I’m like the others, I appreciated the visuals and I kind of saw what they were going for, but the last battle was too much. At this point, what’s left of RDA leadership?

Cameron said if 4-5 are not made, he will write a book wrapping up the one dangling plot line from three. What was it? The colonel’s death or the Ash tribe?

I have a suspicion that they aren’t getting made, partly a combination of Cameron’s age and interest in moving on and Disney looking at the books and seeing part 3 didn’t really make THAT much once all the bills are paid.

It’s over a billion after like 4 weeks. It’s probably getting made. I doubt he’s going to be involved in the minutiae of 4/5 but he’s going to be very involved in the overall of it.

I expect Disney is paying more attention to the $266m-$300m domestic compared to Way of Water’s $650m. Bear in mind the exhibitor share of ticket profit grows the longer a film plays (to incentivize them to keep it in theaters) and foreign sales aren’t as profitable as domestic. I don’t know how much they spent on P&A but rule of thumb it’s an additional 30%-50% of the production budget (and this is a world wide release) so it’s not insignificant.

Anyway, I’m sure it’ll make a profit but I can see how Disney would be risk averse at spending another $500m.

What was/is the attraction of Avatar?

I thought the first one was meh, so I skipped 2 and won't watch 3.

Also, the Avatar font is basically Papyrus

I haven't seen the latest one because it seemed pretty much like part 2 recycled with a new antagonist. These are technical marvels and you do feel like you're transported to a different world. I'll definitely watch it when it hits Disney+ or I can rent it on 4K.

Yeah he wants to make 2 more, but just give us one to close it out. All I ask.

If he had his way, 2 and 3 would have been 2 and we could end it with a trilogy. But it would have been 6.5 hours long.

So yeah, I'm fine with treating Avatar 4 like the third movie of a trilogy and ending it there.

Same. Hope it's not a split movie with a cliffhanger...just give us the finale and close it all up.

I'm predicting Quaritch either switches to their side or sacrifices himself in the end...too much foreshadowing with his care for Spider and Jake force feeding him "Open your eyes Colonel" speeches.

I have only been paying very peripheral attention to the James Cameron press tour, but I think he mentioned that Fire and Ash is the end of that story and any sequels would be set on Pandora but picking up with (mostly) new characters.

She a fucking trooper, but I have to imagine actors like Zoe Saldana would prefer to be working in LA near her family more often and not in a wet suit covered with CGI dots for a year at a time.

Hmm that's the first I've heard that...I did hear him say a 5 movie story...but maybe missed that latter part.

And I'm sure. Zoe putting in work...been in 3 of the 4 highest grossing movies.

He said in an interview that if he doesn't get the additional movies, he would write a book that would close out the one dangling plot line from Fire & Ash. We've already guessed what it is on this thread, but I'm guessing it's something to do with Spider/Quaritch.

You may well be right, but I think he closed that narrative loop. I think he wants to continue Kiri’s story, maybe as a much older character (and Weaver won’t have to have her voice adjusted to sound younger).

That could be the thread he was referring, since she was obviously destined for something big.

That makes more sense than Spider/Quaritch.

Just something to close the narrative off...been 16 years of it now.

Hmm that's interesting...haven't thought of that. A time jump and focused on older kids would be interesting.

I just looked and she's in 4 of the top 6 highest grossing of all time. Doesn't hurt to be in Endgame/infinity war AND Avatar/Way of Water.

Add in what all the Guardians did and even fire and Ash over a billion now...Samuel L Jackson is the only one close I bet.

Zoe Saldaña becomes highest-grossing actor of all time with 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'

Just saw this...Fire and Ash put Zoey at the top. Was Samuel L and Scar Jo before thanks to the MCU.

yeah wasn't even including them cause they don't compare to the other two properties...

if she ever got into Star Wars she'd pretty much hit the nerd trifecta(Marvel/Star Trek/Star Wars) with the Avatar movie side hustles.

I kid, I know those movies have their fans and they probably contributed to Star Trek being where it's at now with multiple series.

I’ll probably watch it for the visuals but the last one was not good and about a hour too long.

The first one was a very very good Star Trek movie considering they had to reestablish the characters with new actors(and pretty much nailed the casting with Spock and McCoy).

And it's funny I actually like the 3rd one more than the 2nd one...mainly because it felt more like a 1 episode off shoot "villain of the week" like the original series than a continuation. I know why some don't like it...but it's much more enjoyable a watch than Into the Darkness.

Oh yeah, it goes 1, 3 and 2 in that order. They butchered Khan so badly in Into Darkness.

Either way - Saldana, between Marvel, Trek and Avatar, is loaded loaded and set for multiple lives just from 11 movies. And is still slumming it with T-Mobile commercials and Paramount Plus dramas.

All true. And don't scoff at that Tmobile money...plus Lioness is fun.
