  • Chopper changed the title to Shipley swallowed by private equity. RIP Shipley

Fuck Shipley. $4.99 for a large cup of coffee. That was 3 months ago, and I am never going back.

Not disabling my ad blocker for that stupid article, but did it say it was shutting down or just a change in ownership?

That's definitely one of our go-to breakfast places, especially when we're heading out on the road.

They sold to a private equity in 2021

Yawn. Shipley’s was already owned by a private equity firm who is selling to another.

I have a very, very special place in my heart for Shipley. It was one of the first places a departed uncle took me to when I first immigrated to Houston and tried for the first time a fresh-glazed donut. A donut of any kind! And to this day, a Shipley fresh-glazed is my all-time favorite. They remain a guilty pleasure and something I'll occasionally grab a dozen of when I visit family.

You're right. I didn't notice the subhed. Maybe not much about anything.

I have never understood the fascination with Shipley's.

It's like the Li'l Sebastian of breakfast places.

I like Shipley, but then again, I've never had any donut wow me.

I remember a few years back Grant Brisbee tweeted that he was going to Houston for the first time and asked for places to eat.  Quite a few people mentioned Shipley's and I was like, "We have a fucking Shipley's in San Marcos, and these clowns are suggesting it's where you should eat in Houston?"

I think it's more cause it started out in Houston? But I get the sentiment though.

A friend of mine (sort of, more of a friend of a friend) came to Austin several years ago for work and was staying at the JW Marriott on 2nd & Congress downtown. He lives in a rural town with few restaurant options so naturally he wanted to go somewhere for lunch. Dude was literally around the corner from Cooper's BBQ and his restaurant of choice that he wanted me to take him to was....Shake Shack.

I legit haven't said a word to him since and that was like 7-8 years ago.

Shake Shack is pretty damn good, not that I ever go to there...

I chose Shake Shack over Cooper's BBQ every time.  I could also find many places better than Shake Shack.

Sure but as a non-native/resident are you gonna choose a chain over a local spot that's at least supposed to be good? That seems crazy to me.

Definitely worth posting.  You sure showed him.  Maybe he'll read this thread, realize it's him, and feel bad...

A large hot coffee is $2.70 and all north Austin, CP and Leander locations.  What did you order?

The superior Shipley donut can be eaten off the shelf without getting sticky fingers.  Duncan and Krispy Kreme are nasty by nature and there is no choice but to get icky fingers.

There’s one on the way to my office.  I’m not a huge donut eater but occasionally I swing thru on my way to work and grab a couple sausage jalapeño cheese klobasnik things.  I’ve had worse.

Their glazed donuts are the best glazed donuts, but their kolaches (suck it Czechs) leave a lot to be desired. I don't eat donuts much these days, so i prefer an Earl Campbell or Renfro's kolache from the local Cambodian run place.

Not in Japan if you're hankerin' for a hamburger, you can't!

Half of Japan's "hamburgers" are the Japanese hamburg-steak recipe (ugh!), and the other half are so drowned in condiments you can't even taste any beef! (double-ugh!)

Shake Shack is a hamburger-oasis in Japan, and they keep opening locations.

It's very popular with the locals, as there's barely a place to sit in Shake Shack even in the less touristy neighborhoods/(wards) in Tokyo, like Ebisu.

Actually, I'm not a weeb.

Weebs purport to know everything about Japan.

I'll never know everything about Japan, not even close.

It's just worth the adventure to explore the cities and the countryside.

Round Rock Donuts was the only one that I've ever really, really loved.

I’m sure he’s very broken up about it.

Agreed, but there’s too many here that enjoy getting cream filled.

Shipley’s straight out of the fryer (ask them and they will make it for you) is an entirely different experience. Far superior
