July 29Jul 29 Need tips for (relatively) painless vehicle registration facilities in the Austin area. I'll happily pay a convenience fee at a title shop, etc. if it cuts down the insane tax office wait times. Central/north is better than others, but I am willing to learn. Registration has not expired, insurance and ID are in hand, and passing emissions inspection is current.
July 29Jul 29 Go to Johnson City and register there. You don't have to register in the same County. I had to get my license renewed, I drove to Seguin and had it done the next day. Didn't have to wait 3 months for an appt.
July 29Jul 29 You mean to just pay your annual registration and pick up your new sticker? HEB customer service, bro. If it's open.

July 29Jul 29 Unless you're talking about a new vehicle that requires titling, you can do it online with no issues. All you need is the license plate number and last 4 of the vin.
July 29Jul 29 Author I don't want to do it online, I need the sticker by Thursday. Does HEB provide the sticker at the point of sale or is it mailed?
July 29Jul 29 Sticker is at point of sale but if you are more than a few weeks expired or don’t have the green renewal paper they won’t do it for you.If you do online, you’ll get a receipt within about 48hrs and that is good for proof of registration.

It's good thru Thursday, I just don't want to drive around on an expired sticker (even if I have the receipt). I'll try HEB tomorrow. Thanks.
July 30Jul 30 Author Well, that couldn't have gone better. Sticker Stop on Burnet just north of 183 got me in and out in less than 15 minutes, and it took me about 2 minutes at the Burnet/Koenig HEB to get my sticker. Thanks for the tips.

Some time after online payment, you get a receipt that they expressly tell you is good for proof of registration.
July 31Jul 31 jimmyjazz is clearly riding dirty and doesn’t want to give the cops any reason to pull him over. smart man.

July 31Jul 31 I clearly misunderstood the assignment. You could have stayed home and smoked your chiba so long as you have a printer. Also, the fuzz wont mess with you if you are within a month of expiration if they see it and if they run your shit after you register online it will show up anyways. Point stands, if you need a new license because you are 6 months past expiration and dont ever look at your license because you are old and dont run drugs, go on a road trip. Austin times are insane but odds are good you can get in the same week in surrounding counties. Trust me I stayed in a holiday inn awhile back.

It's good through the 5th day of the month after registration, and the online receipt is good for 30 days, just in case anyone else is needing the info. Plus, isn't the sticker pretty much literal, window-dressing at this point. A plate scan tells them whether your registration is up to date. Edited July 31Jul 31 by dcbc

I think that's true -- I got caught by the plate scan on MoPac last year (different vehicle). I had completely forgotten to renew that registration and I was a couple of months over.
August 8Aug 8 I'm up this month for the new Travis county emission test. Is it, just go to your normal inspection place? Anything different to expect? Still have to wait?

Still have to wait? Normal inspection places will do it. It's a lot quicker since they just test emissions. Just plug in the machine, let it ding, pull it out.
August 8Aug 8 Author One Lamb's shop told me it would be a couple of hours. I went up the road to Sticker Shock (Shop) on Burnet and it was less than 15 minutes.
August 8Aug 8 I go to the Wash Shop on Guadalupe just north of campus. Just the emission test took around 5 min but I did need to wait 24 hours before doing the registration renewal online but they give you a email receipt that can be used for a month until you get the sticker mailed.
