April 6, 20187 yr Came up on a bad wreck on the way home yesterday. 18 wheeler in right lane takes evasive action for some unknown reason, loses control, starts skidding sideways, rolls over a Lincoln Town Car and into the median. Truck driver was killed, Lincoln driver sustained non-life threatening injuries. 287 was shut down for several hours. Edited April 6, 20187 yr by RPM

May 5, 20187 yr Used to go to Inland Cold Storage in Kansas City. It's a bunch of tunnels like that. First time I ever felt claustrophobic when I drove way back in there. They were blasting new expansion, too. That did not help. Guess this guy was in a hurry to get some of that 94¢ fuel. Edited May 5, 20187 yr by RPM
May 6, 20187 yr Author Full disclosure: our permits had us in the left lane from just south of riverside to just past 183 on 35N111" long 93k lbsThere were 4 of us with escorts running front and rear.
May 7, 20187 yr Author How do bridge heights work in terms of route planning? Is that all electronic now?I haven't hauled anything over 16'. I believe 18' and over is considered a super load which would require an actual route survey and bucket trucks to move power lines. But the state issues a route with the permit. Still have to pay attention to bridge heights. I forget the limit but if a bridge is under a certain height maybe 15' they are marked by a yellow diamond with the measurement on it 1/2 to 1/4 mile before the bridge. There was a bridge between temple and Waco that was not noted on my permit. It was 13'9" and I was 15" luckily I was paying attention and got off the exit before. A couple of drivers missed the exit and had to wait for police to shut down a lane of I35 so they could back up to the exit ramp.
May 7, 20187 yr Damn, that's crazy. I figured there would be more checks for something like that than just watching signs, some kind of national database or something that dots are required to update. It seems like Cesar Chavez in Austin is like 13'9" but my memory could be off. Not a lot of room for error there.

Next time you're on the interstate look at the bridges as you go under them. 90% or more have damage from being hit at some point.
May 7, 20187 yr Author Did you see this one? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.tennessean.com/amp/561358002?source=imagesDriver was over 100 miles off his permitted route. Not livecend to pull that trailer either.

May 7, 20187 yr What do you mean he’s not licensed? I see a banner on the tractor... LOLz. Hauled way too many overweight loads back in the day, but that was before DOT and regulations being so much tighter.

May 7, 20187 yr http://www.wipp.energy.gov/wipprecovery/about.html The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a deep geologic repository for permanent disposal of a specific type of waste that is the byproduct of the nation's nuclear defense program. WIPP is the nation's only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as transuranic, or TRU, waste. It consists of clothing, tools, rags, residues, debris, soil and other items contaminated with small amounts of plutonium and other man-made radioactive elements. Disposal of transuranic waste is critical to the cleanup of Cold War nuclear production sites. Waste from DOE sites around the country is sent to WIPP for permanent disposal....

We had an evaporator body brought in from Houston up to Texarkana on a truck that took days because it was accompanied the entire route by bucket trucks and police. They would bring drivers in and swap them out so the truck could continue to creep along. That shit would have driven me crazy. Also, I’ve looked to see what that cost, but I haven’t put my hands on the figure yet. Had to be a damn pretty penny.

May 10, 20187 yr Drifter, who is responsible for securing the load to your trailer? Do you just show up at the loading site, and then take off when they say you're good to go, or are you responsible for that?
May 11, 20187 yr Author The driver is always responsible. Doesn't matter if it's preloaded or not. I never trust anyone to secure my loads. Picked this shit up today. It's equipment to make those rubber running tracks around ball fields.

May 31, 20187 yr Author 59 over the San Jacinto river Just north of Houston. Was told the river is nearly 60' deep here and it was over the road during the Harvey floods.
May 31, 20187 yr I was on the outskirts of a little southern town Trying to reach my destination before the sun went down The old CB was blaring away on Channel 1-9 When there came a little boy's voice on the radio line And he said, "Breaker 1-9, is anyone there? Come on back truckers and talk to Teddy Bear" Well I keyed the mike and I said, "You got it, Teddy Bear" And the little boy's voice came back on the air "Appreciate the break who we got on that end" I told him my handle and then he began "Though I'm not supposed to bother you fellows out there Mom says you're busy and for me to stay off the air" But you see, I get lonely and it helps to talk 'Cause that's about all I can do, I'm crippled and I can't walk I came back and told him to fire up that mike And I'd talk to him as long as he'd liked "This was my dad's radio", the little boy said But I guess it's mine and mom's now 'cause my daddy's dead Dad had a wreck about a month ago He was trying to get home in a blinding snow Mom has to work now to make ends meet And I'm not much help with my two crippled feet She says not to worry that we'll make it alright But I hear her crying sometimes late at night You know there's one thing I want more than anything else to see Oh, I know you guys are too busy to bother with me But you see, my dad used to take me for rides when he was home But I guess that's all over now since my daddy's gone Not one breaker came on the old CB As that little crippled boy talked with me I tried hard to swallow a lump just wouldn't stay down As I thought about my boy back in Greenville town Dad was gonna take mom and me with him later on this year Why I remember him saying someday This old truck will be yours, Teddy Bear But I know now I'll never get a ride on 18-wheeler again But this old base'll keep me in touch with all my trucker friends Teddy Bear's gonna back on out now and leave you alone 'Cause it's about time for mom to come home But you give me shout when you're passing through And I'll surely be happy to come back to you Well, I came back and I said before you go 10-10 What's your home 20, little CB friend He gave me his address and I didn't once hesitate 'Cause this hot load of freight would just have to wait I turned that truck around on a dime And headed straight for Jackson Street 229 And as I rounded the corner, oh, I got one the heck of a shock 18-wheeler's were lined up for three city blocks Well I guess every driver for miles around had caught Teddy Bear's call And that little crippled boy was having a ball For as fast as one driver would carry him in Another would carry him to his truck and take off again Well, you better believe I took my turn at riding Teddy Bear And then carried him back in and put him down in his chair And buddy, if I never live to see happiness again I want you to know I saw it that day in the face of that little man We took up a collection for him before his mama got home And each driver said goodbye and then they were all gone He shook my hand with a mile long grin And said, "So long trucker, I'll catch you again" Ah, I hit that interstate with tears in my eyes I turned on the radio and I got another surprise "Breaker 1-9", came the voice on the air "Just one word of thanks from mama, Teddy Bear We wish each and everyone a special prayer for you 'Cause you just made my little boy's dream come true I'll sign off now before I start to cry May God ride with you 10-4 and goodbye"

June 1, 20187 yr Author Needs more attention. First of all Lot Lizzard is the preferred nomenclature dude. Best is a very subjective question? And I can't answer that from experience. I can tell you by volume. San Antonio Flying J is still a very active spot where they still advertise on the CB and you can spot them running between trucks. Also Dallas TA seems to be fairly active still even though it's gated and paid parking. Amarillo is also very active with aggressive Lot Lizzards that will knock on your door at 3am.
June 1, 20187 yr Author So much better stuff out there than these old worn out hero trucker bullshit narratives. I'm so tired of hearing about how great truckers are. Hang out in a truck stop for an hour and you will begin to hate these fucks as much as I do.
