August 18Aug 18 Popular Post We're so back. And just like every year, college football sends us a lovely amuse bouche with Week Zero. A note: there's some football product in mid-afternoon, but go for a walk and see your families instead. It's not worth it. #17 Kansas State (-3) vs. #22 Iowa State @ Dublin, Ireland (12 ET / 11 CT ESPN): Let's begin with a ranked rivalry game from the shores of the Irish Sea. Last year's Aer Lingus Kickoff was a barnstormer that presaged the 2024 FSU Seminoles as one of college football's all-time wet farts and Georgia Tech as a surprising ACC contender. This year the cornfed masses of Middle America descend on Dublin to watch two serious contenders for the Big XII title. Matt Campbell has another strong Cylcones squad. Rocco Becht returns, though he loses his elite WR corps to the NFL. The defense should be nasty, and Jon Heacock is one of the best minds in college football. Chris Kleiman thinks this is the year K-State can finally break through the 9-4 ceiling. Avery Johnson and Dylan Edwards are a great 1-2 punch for his offense, and their defense, especially the LBs led by Austin Romaine should be able to make Becht's life miserable. Smart coaches, good players, this should be a fun start to the season. I'll tip K-State in a low scoring battle. Fresno State @ Kansas (-12.5) (6:30 ET / 5:30 CT FOX): It's an alternate (and in some ways even more agricultural) Farmageddon in KU's mostly upgraded stadium. Love the wheat endzones. KU has Jalon Daniels back with some fun weapons to play with - Emmanuel Henderson from Bama and Bryson Canty from Columbia were highly sought-after WRs and Daniel Hinshaw is much-hyped to have a breakout season with Devin Neal gone. Matt Entz takes the reins in the Valley after Jeff Tedford stepped down, arriving from NDSU. As is tradition these days for coaching turnover, FSU flipped a quarter of its roster through the Portal and Kurt Warner's son EJ will be starting at QB. They will probably not be in good enough shape to handle a well-coached P4 team, but Leipold has dropped a season opener to South Dakota before. This is also the Bulldogs' last season in the MWC before they join the Zombie Pac-whatever. Sam Houston State @ Western Kentucky (-10) (7 ET / 6 CT CBS): CUSA action! These are likely to be two of the top four teams in the conference, so it's a surprisingly important game in Bowling Green (famous for Mammoth Cave National Park, and being the home of Corvette production). Stanford @ Hawaii (-2.5) (7:30 ET / 6:30 CT CBS): Is this a great game? No. Is it a G5 school in a beautiful location favored at home against a P4 with a really snooty fanbase? Yes. Enjoy the car crash. Edited August 18Aug 18 by texifornia
August 18Aug 18 most years, the best attraction to the Week 0 game in Dublin is keeping track of how long the beer cup snake grows....

It’s also not opening til 2029 so I doubt much planning has happened except for a finding plan.

August 18Aug 18 I have Irish relatives through marriage and we've visited plenty, but mostly on the west coast with Galway as the home base. The crazy thing about going from there to Dublin is that, the first time I did it in 2009, it was like a 6+hour drive. Maybe more like 7+ if memory serves. Now? Less than 3 hours. They've really built out a lot of infrastructure that they were lagging on for decades. Anyway, to tex's original post, the kids growing up there still have to learn Celtic/Gaelic/whatever they call it in school. They say there's a pocket of like 10,000-ish people on the island who still speak it as native tongue. Also, Dublin is a terrific city. I want Texas to open against someone there, preferably Notre Dame, someday. I'm excited about the Iowa State/KSU game. Does Matt Campbell do his typical opening game bedshitting? Or does he have his team ready for a conference rival? Does Klieman move on from whatever personal stuff was causing him problems last year? Can Avery Johnson approach living up to the early expectations when he arrived? Can he complete a forward pass at least 15 times in this game? Interested in finding out. The KU/Fresno State game could be fun. Leipold has another new OC. Maybe Jalon Daniels figures some shit out more quickly this season. KU closed well last year, but their start was ugly and ruined the year.

The point is that MSU isn't Stanford. It's a huge state school with good history in both revenue sports and it isn't on the other side of the country as its conference. They're never going to be perennial title contenders but they shouldn't be going 5-7 every year or ever go 4-8.

Lots of shitty state schools suck at football. Additionally, while they have a decent history, they're not an overly rich college one of the biggest NIL players is their state school rival. It's going to be harder for them to claw their way out of this hole. On the other hand, Jonathan Smith seems like a good coach. But we'll see. I don't think it's a given they're going to return to 8-4 seasons.

I wouldn't put any money on them returning to any sort of glory but they should be able to not suck as much as they have as of late. They are still recruiting pretty well in hoops - I know basketball is a bigger deal up there but they aren't Duke or Kansas. They care about football, too.

Everyone got turned off by the Mel Tugger stuff, but if Smith shows real signs of life, they're going to be okay on that front. Regarding Maryland, folks should look at their schedule. They just brought in a decent dual threat, true freshman QB, and Locksley has actually amassed some talent. Everyone is picking these guys at the bottom of the Big 10 with Purdue this year. Maybe that comes to fruition. That said, I think they've got a shot at being an ASU type of riser this year. Regarding the schedule, they play poo in the non-con and then they miss Oregon, Iowa, Ohio State, USC and Penn State. They get Indiana and Michigan at home and go to Indiana. They could go anywhere from 3-9 to 9-3.

Two of my best high school friends were Northern Irishmen who moved back home afterwards, to I started in Cork and worked my way north to visit them for a St. Patrick's Day in Coleraine/Portstewart, and I've been to Dublin on work travel as well. Every country on earth tries to tell you they have the friendliest, most hospitable people, but Ireland is the only one telling the truth, and I say that as someone with zero Irish ancestry. What a wonderful place.

August 20Aug 20 Popular Post Fuck K-State. Excited for this one. Getting up early to smoke some egg casseroles on the pellet grill. Gonna do one with Hatch chiles, chorizo, and chives. Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar in the back yard. Unseasonably cool weather (high of 73) will make it feel like Fall after an absurdly muggy summer. I kinda can't believe it's here, but it's here.
August 20Aug 20 Campbell's notoriously bad to start the year, but he's 4-2 against Kleiman, and none of the wins have been fluky. One of these trends will give. My biggest concern is that Jayce Brown (KSU WR) got wide open a couple of times last year against our best returning cover guy (Jeremiah Cooper). Granted, he was having to spend the pre-snap lining up 4th string LBers in the right spot, but I'd assume they'll take some shots against Cooper early to try and get some momentum out the gate. I think our offense is going to be fine. Rocco Becht is a dog, our line is serviceable, we have 2 pretty damn solid RBs, and a couple proven good TEs. WR is a question mark, but the guys coming in are talented on paper, and Campbell always has at least one really good wideout on the roster. Defense was riddled with injury last year. The LB corps in particular. They fell off quite a bit, but it's hard to prognosticate this year because so many guys who never expected to play were playing. Now they have a ton of returning experience, but how good are they?
