April 21, 20187 yr I'm glad we get TCU in the last series of Big 12 play. TCU isn't going to make a regional unless they win the Big 12 tourney. If TCU is smart they will just conserve their arms in the final series against Texas and try to make a run in the Big 12 tournament.

April 23, 20187 yr B&E were saying 36 wins and top 2 in the Big 12 should set up a regional host slot. Any truth to that?
April 23, 20187 yr 35 minutes ago, jimmyjazz said: B&E were saying 36 wins and top 2 in the Big 12 should set up a regional host slot. Any truth to that? That would mean Texas wins 8 of its final 12 games w series @WVU, @tech and tcu. You would think Texas's rpi following a performance like that would reflect a top 16 ranking. Barring a conf tourney 0-2 or 1-2 performance, I think Texas could safely assume its role as a host if that were to happen. Last year, Texas finished 5th in the conference with a losing record, but still almost hosted because of their strong conf tournament run. So nothing is guaranteed until we see how the last 14-15 games go I guess. If Texas can pull off a conf regular season and tournament championship (albeit, not an odds on favorite to do so), no question they're a top 8 national seed. Not that we're getting ahead of ourselves or anything... Edited April 23, 20187 yr by X-Wing @Aliciousness

Win all the remaining non-conference games (Houston, Texas State X 2) 2-1 vs WV, 1-2 vs Tech, and 3-0 or 2-1 vs TCU. I think that puts Texas in the top 2 in the Big 12 and gives them a chance to host. The Big 12 is down this year but it's still the #2 RPI conference. Our metrics are about to jump in these next 2 weeks if we can just win a few games. Especially with WV and Tech on the road......all of those will likely be group 1/tier 1 wins. Edited April 23, 20187 yr by texasstrong12
April 23, 20187 yr The other thing to remember is there are a few teams ahead of us in RPI that I don't think will host. A&M for example is 9-9 in the SEC and they close with @ Miss State, Florida, @ Arkansas, South Carolina. There's a very good chance A&M finishes 2 or 3 games below .500 in the SEC. There's a couple other SEC teams like Kentucky, Missouri and Vanderbilt that are in same boat. All these SEC teams that finish around .500 in conference or below .500 aren't going to host. April 23, 20187 yr Team has set itself up nicely to earn a regional or not. And don’t bet on the committee not awarding regionals to middling sec teams, especially if they had a good nonconference record. Then they can match those regionals up with Florida, arky, and another top 8 sec regional to really set the conference up to get at least 2 to the cws. Edited April 23, 20187 yr by Pato del Muerto

In year's past, finishing around .500 in the SEC has not been good enough to host. There are 8 SEC teams currently in the RPI top 25 and I bet they get a max of 5 regional hosts this year. As another poster said, it doesn't take into account conference tournaments. Also, at least imo, depending on who it's against, Texas can bolster a host resume without winning all 13 of 13 games. Would probably take winning the conference though, or getting outright second and not being swept by Tech. Also, and this is completely hypothetical as the odds are astronomical, but if Texas went 13-0 to end the season and finished 41-15 before the tournament (with a big 12 championship assuming Ok St doesn't win the remainder of their games either), I'd find it very hard to believe that Texas wouldn't get a national seed with that record and a road series sweep against Tech to boot. Then again, it's probably not best to deal in hypotheticals
April 24, 20187 yr The committee does not go straight RPI when determining regional hosts. I would have to go back and look at the history of RPI to determine how often teams outside of the top 16 in RPI are regional hosts. But there's been a couple examples in recent history that I can remember off the top of my head. Coastal Carolina in '16 finished 12th in RPI and didn't host. I believe Virginia ended up being the host at around 20 in RPI. http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/sports/college/sun-belt/coastal-carolina-university/article80713962.html There were a lot of people upset a couple years ago about UC Santa Barbara hosting. I can't remember where they finished in RPI, but I believe it was in the low 20s. They went 0-2 in their regional so that's the only reason I remember that one. Maybe those are just anomalies. I would have to look deeper into RPI and regional hosts.
April 24, 20187 yr Geography can play a role, once they finalize the field and see where everyone is and if there are decent regional foursomes and as few orphan teams as reasonable.
April 24, 20187 yr Also, based on history the conference winner of the 2nd best RPI conference almost always hosts. Florida '17 (regional host) Miss State '16 (regional host) Louisville '15 (regional host) OK State '14 (regional host) Vanderbilt '13 (regional host) Florida State '12 (regional host) Virginia '11 (regional host) Arizona State '10 (regional host) Florida State '09 (regional host) Arizona State '08 (regional host) Texas '07 (regional host) That's as far back as Warren Nolan goes in terms of conference RPI rankings. If we won the Big 12, we would be the first team in 11 years to win the 2nd best RPI conference and not host.

April 25, 20187 yr Ugh, and now WVU's rpi dropped after beating Marshall last night. The Mountaineers are not very good and, from the looks of it, have some shoddy pitching, but can hit the ball. If Texas doesn't win at least 2 of 3 in that series, the hosting chances could be kaput. Then again, it's probably going to come down to how we play in the @Tech series regardless
