The debut albums thread has started covering sophomore efforts. Already mentioned:

Led Zeppelin II

Alice in Chains: Dirt

Beastie Boys: Paul's Boutique

Public Enemy: It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

What else comes to mind?

Radiohead.bends.albumart.jpg

Megadeth_-_Peace_Sells..._But_Who's_Buyi

Jimi Hendrix: Axis: Bold As Love

Fleetwood Mac: Rumours (I don't give a fuck)

Carole King: Tapestry (I mean, come on.  This might be your leader.)

Black Sabbath: Paranoid

Metallica: Ride the Lightning

The Beatles: With the Beatles (Or Please Please Me depending on how you score My Bonnie)

Queen: Queen II

Cream: Disraeli Gears

RATM: Evil Empire

Rush: Fly By Night

Nirvana: Nevermind (shrug, I'm counting Bleach!)

And my favorite sophomore release

Smashing Pumpkins: Siamese Dream

(Side note: I count Bleach, but I don't count Opiate as Tool's first real release.  I'm a complicated person.)

These are two of the best answers. A lot of the others are good, but not iconic.

I have this album somewhere, it's a quadraphonic version and has an alternate ending to War Pigs.  Doesn't have that weird speeded up thing at the end.  Wonder what it's worth.

This so much.

Nevermind is the right answer.

Rumours?  That was Fleetwood Mac’s 11th album.

My nomination:

Blech. Negatory. A band is more than a name, and if that lineup, with its entirely new direction, voice, and sound, isn't considered a whole new band then the term is near meaningless. That they didn't change the name is immaterial.

By that logic Frank Zappa has had about a dozen second albums.

5 star masterpiece. I'll accept it.

I don't think Mick Fleetwood, and especially John McVie, have the type of input that define a band's identity like Zappa did.  Zappa was a constant, THE constant.  Mick and John aren't that type of constant.

Maybe if Christine McVie was the primary creative voice to bridge the group's identity before and after Lindsay and Stevie joined you'd have a strong point.  But she wasn't.

Riiiight. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie never had much input on Fleetwood Mac.

Good one.

LOL. Dude.

According to Wiki, Ah Via Musicom is EJ's third album. But his first was released in 1978, followed by Tones 8 years later.  In any event, I wore the shit out of my Ah Via Musicom cassette in college.
