June 10Jun 10 Watching for the first time and about halfway through season 4. It's a slow burn at times, but I'm enjoying it overall. I can definitely see the shift in Don during this season.
June 11Jun 11 timely bump as i've been rewatching this over the past couple of months. i'm halfway through season 6. i think my biggest take away thus far is that i did not realize at the time how fucking great the end of season 5 was. the last episode was kinda meh, but the 3-4 episodes that preceeded it were all bangers. maybe the best overall stretch of the show.
June 11Jun 11 That whole season killed. It was like a fever dream and “Signal 30” was one of the best episodes of the series.

Am I the only one who occasionally wishes this series had aired on HBO? Because, well, a "True Detective Season 1 Episode Two-esque Scene" with Joan Holloway, well, I've been to my bunk often at the thought... The wife and I just finished season 1 for the first time ever. Loving it. So, just how many cigarettes do you think they smoked making this festival of debauchery? Edited July 3Jul 3 by Bevo&Pevo
July 3Jul 3 I heard they used some sort of fake cigarettes. And enjoy. It’s as good a television product as has ever been produced.

July 3Jul 3 I read in an interview somewhere that it's some sort of herbal cigarette with no tobacco or nicotine. Just finished my run through and loved the ending. What they did with Don reminds me of Walter White, you appreciate him and admire him, then begin to feel bad for him almost to the point of dislike, but by the end he redeems himself. PROTIP: if you ffwd through all the solo Betty scenes you should be able to get through the entire series before OSU.

Dad had a gallon of 140 proof tequila that coincidentally looked exactly like Listerine to any snooping school teacher. Good ol tap water did the trick. It was around 90 proof when I was done.
August 8Aug 8 I finished up my rewatch a couple of weeks back. I had seen seasons 1-4 a million times, and 5 a few, but don't think I had ever rewatched seasons 6 or 7 after they originally aired so there was definitely some stuff I didn't remember. For instance, I didn't really remember how bad and unlikable Don got in season 6. I still was on his side for most things, but man he was a complete asshole at certain times. But man oh man it was still so satisfying when he ultimately defeated Jim Cutler at the end of the first part of season 7. "The Strategy" and "Waterloo" might just be the two strongest back to back episodes the series ever did. I also remember being initially offput by Don's little adventure at the very end of the series, but on a second watch, it made complete narrative sense. McCann was indeed a soulless "sausage factory" as Don called it back in season 3 and I can definitely see Don saying "fuck this" and getting out. In fact, I kind of hate that the final scene implies that he ultimately went back. I wish we could get some sort of epilogue season where it showed that Don went back, did the Coke thing, and ultimately left and just did something else with his life. Overall, I think seasons 4-5 were the show at it's absolute peak, but the whole thing is a fucking masterpiece.

Got kinda wild and cartoonish after that, but let's not go too hard on them for it. LSD, cocaine and copious hairspray will do that to you.

Unrealated to that, but something I just thought of now that I'm thinking about the show again, Don returning to the office in season 7 is such an awesome small scene that really captures the tension he had to be feeling. Very easy to put yourself in his shoes there thanks to the intercutting between him thinking about it and then actually doing it and the excellent, excellent score that accompanies it:
October 28Oct 28 when i was a boy, there was a mansion on the river i used to paddle by in my johnboat. the twinkling lights, violins, girls giggling about something. it’s different inside.
October 29Oct 29 Still my most favorite comical sequence in the entire series is when Pete goes to the fertility clinic and goes to give a sample; only for it to change scenes to Roger playing paddle ball in the office. Just spanking it. It wasn't very often they added physical humor, but damn, there it was slapping you in the face. I burst out laughing the first time I saw it.

"the fog" gets a bad rap, but take away the 8-10 min of childbirth (+sopranos-style day-dreams) and it's an excellent episode. it has a dramatic peggy scene when she first asks for a raise. it has the admiral television sequence, starting with a perfect scene in pete's office. and it has one of roger's best lines, right after they throttle pete post-admiral-pitch, when lane asks, "are we done with the flogging?" and sterling responds, "it's never as good as you think it's gonna be." when i do my rewatches, i ff thru scenes and characters i don't care about (like betty, giving birth, and some of grandpa gene), so s3 is fairly unblemished in my eyes. so much of scdp is about the solvency of the agency, it makes you miss the golden age of sterling-coo. i'm still convinced they could've done an entire season that took place in between the s3 finale and the s4 premiere.

October 30Oct 30 Canadian Club was Don’s office sipper right? Always kind of irked me. I wonder if it’s a homage to an Weiner alcoholic uncle or something?

"because you drank it all." roger liked stoli. bert didn't drink very often, but when he did he liked brandy. i think pete and peggy kinda drank what others poured them, but i wanna say gin was in the mix. and i think lane drank gin.
October 30Oct 30 Kind of surprised Don didn’t mix in a nice Pennsylvania rye, but hey he was drinking for the destination. Not the journey.

November 2Nov 2 I think Weiner was in a tough spot with Betty. How do you depict someone that is bored all the time in a compelling way? January Jones is a beautiful woman and a fine actress. I have no issues with her performance.

November 3Nov 3 FFWD through all the Betty scenes. They contribute nothing to the over all story.Yeah, I think Dons storyline would have been enhanced if Betty and kids were completely written off. Have 1-2 powerful episodes where he completely abandons them. Then like Ben in Friends, no more kids.
November 3Nov 3 Betty is annoying af. But she’s supposed to be annoying af. Don’t fast forward through the scenes. Watch this as it was written and intended to be watched. IMO, you don’t get the full understanding of Don’s character without understating and appreciating his fucked up relationship with Betty. It’s a masterpiece. Don’t chop it up.

Counterpoint--that look Sally and Don exchange in this scene is in my small handful of favorite moments and I love it even more now that I'm a dad with similar age kids (this whole episode is just replete with payoff character moments and it's SO satisfying).
November 3Nov 3 Betty's story arc at the end was fine. Not as good as many others, but still. Ms. Jones is a decent actress and played Betty as a generally bad person. Not sure why all the hate. Glen, otoh... I hope he died in Vietnam. Edited November 3Nov 3 by Parliament
