Most of the big name dealerships and their relationships with Texas schools….

There has always been a mystique around cars in college football. Before NIL, there were whispers, message-board postings and social media photos soft-pedaling accusations of underhanded dealings by boosters.

Paparazzi-style photos appeared in the newspaper, like in 1979, when future SMU Pony Express (and Excess) star Eric Dickerson's gold Trans Am made national news and became the most famous car in college football history, right up there with the Ramblin' Wreck of Georgia Tech.

But now, there are thousands of Eric Dickersons. Players legally pose with their new sports car on a dealer's Facebook page. While it takes some of the cool factor out of the old days, it's a natural evolution for the combination of sports and commerce. And a Pontiac seems downright quaint in retrospect. Across the country, major college football parking lots might as well be outside the Chateau Marmont.

It would be interesting to see a list of who drives what at each of the Texas FBS schools.

My favorite part about Dickerson is an aggy booster paid for his Trans Am. He drove it right up to SMU.

SMU Turned Eric Dickerson's Gold Trans Am Into a Recruiting Image

I found the historical parts more interesting in that story. I posted that link this morning over in the current recruiting thread, but it's worth a repost on the main FB board because of that history.

And one of the cool bits of history was the story of what happened to that car. Wonder where it is now. That was a pretty famous car and it wouldn't have been easy to keep it from being noticed after it got stolen unless it was repainted ... which I suspect it was.

I never heard that Dickerson's TA got stolen. Any idea what side of town? I doubt it happened near Highland Park.

Oak Cliff. Down at the very bottom of that story, which for a really long piece was still worth the read.

Nope I’d think this is worthy of its own thread.

I vote no delete. Not the only link posted more than once, and I think it's a great story that deserves its own thread if for no other reason than the history woven through it.
