August 25Aug 25 At least there's a UT story behind the company. I wonder if UT has any equity since some of the original science was licensed from the university. Curious what kind of money this involves. I imagine quite a bit.

This is from less than a year ago: https://atozsports.com/college-football/texas-longhorns-news/usc-arkansas-adding-corporate-logos-to-their-field-but-dont-expect-texas-to-cash-in-after-ncaa-rule-change/ USC, Arkansas adding corporate logos to their field, but don't expect Texas to cash in From the sound of Del Conte’s remarks, it’ll be a while before the Longhorns put logos on the field at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Maybe never. “Anyone who knows me knows I’m a traditionalist. We haven’t contemplated any of that,” Del Conte told A to Z Sports on Thursday. Texas, arguably the most financially successful athletic department in America, doesn’t need money. The football program alone generated $183 million during the 2022-23 fiscal year, according to figures obtained by USA Today. Putting logos on the field or the UT uniform might be more trouble than it’s worth. Texas would have a hard time selling a corporate sponsorship to the field. The Longhorns currently play on Earl Campbell-Ricky Williams Field at Royal-Memorial Stadium. It’s hard to imagine UT pushing its two Heisman Trophy winners aside for a business name. The field was renamed in Campbell and Williams’ honor in 2020. Previously, it was called Joe Jamail Field in honor of one of UT’s biggest donors, who died in 2015. Frankly, it’s hard to envision Texas putting any sort of corporate logo on anything associated with its football stadium, field or program. Then again, anything is possible for the right price.

Lol I don't think a rich person or institution has ever said, "You know what? We have enough money, we don't need to make any more, we're good" Especially when it involves partnering with an Austin-based company that started as UT research. What starts here changes the world.... This sponsorship is an easy way to highlight the university as a whole, to help a UT friendly company gain visibility, and, with that increased visibility, foster what could be a very very lucrative partnership for years to come. Plus, I'd prefer a logo on the field rather than a jumbotron commercial or something that interrupts game flow.

August 25Aug 25 Does anyone have a link or knowledge of the deal as far as who pays whom, how much, for how long, etc? Even without the “how much” who writes the checks and who cashes them?

Well I guess I'll sit around freaking out that we MIGHT some day add corporate sponsorships to our uniforms even though he's fought all attempts to have Nike give us alternate uniforms and has repeatedly said the uniform is sacred and we're not touching it.

August 25Aug 25 Bfd. Looks pretty damn unobtrusive as on-field logos go. I'll worry about it when our RB trips over the logo on the field. And, yeah, equating this to doing the same on uniforms is dumb. CDC has a lenghty track record of energetically defending the untouchable nature of our uniforms.

God help us if we lose a home game this year. "ITS THE STUPID ON FIELD LOGO!"

That, and as far as logos go, it's not the most ostentatious. But I'd be lying if I said I'm happy about it or even OK with it. There are so many ways logos and advertising can make it into a stadium like banners on sideline walls, etc. Seems like keeping the field itself free of corporate clutter is not a huge sacrifice to generating revenue in the interests of keeping the game focused on itself.

Conversely, an unobtrusive logo on the field seems like not a huge sacrifice to generate more revenue to help with revenue sharing bills.

Source - if it was, we'd already have them.
August 26Aug 26 8 hours ago, TexasBeta said: Pass.. we are better than this Technically, we're observably not. I don't know. I feel in a lot of ways UT was on the leading edge of commercializing college sports in the 80s and 90s. I watched as the gameday experience became more and more about what sponsor we could graft on for a few more bucks, so the athletic department could show they were raising revenue year after year - their source for job security in ways success on the football field never mattered. We sold our soul in half a dozen ways. We named the field after Joe Jamail for a huge donation. At least it was from a legendary alum, but it still bothered me some. I realize we've walked that back. I'm glad we don't have a corporate sponsor for the stadium, but I feel like it's just a matter of time. I saw an article today from The Athletic on how much college expenses and revenue have risen from 2005 to 2023 based on FOIA records. They did a survey of schools, with 3 from the SEC, 3 from the Big 10, 3 from the ACC, 3 from the Big 12, and a few others. It basically said what I've been saying for years, which is we're nowhere near the top of the scales, and that it's not sustainable. But the only thing that's really going to bring it under control - either the rabid search for new revenue sources, or the escalation of expenses - is some kind of federal legislation, or the collapse of the industry. Maybe both. I feel good about UT's ability to weather wherever all this goes, but I'm concerned about what the future of college football is going to entail.

I hear you, but he’s also developing a long track record of bastardizing DKR. The tacky SEZ is going to age horribly. He gave Arnold and Itkin a naming display so large for their donation you’d think the university was renamed after them. Now a corporate sponsor on the field
