Have lunch fairly regularly with a buddy who's business is in San Marcos, so always trying to meet south to cut his travel time.  Moreno BBQ, Satellite ATX and Oasthouse are the last couple of spots we ate.  Looking for quality sit down lunch that isn't going to break the bank or take forever (Leroy & Lewis).  Throw some names at me - prefer locations closer to MoPac than 35, and definitely not East of 35.  tia

Another friend suggested The Local ATX.

Hope to get a good list going here.

Pretty safe menu. Most everything I've had there has been pretty good.

I like their fried rice a lot.

Forgot a good one - I like Las Lomas a lot too. Probably my favorite Texmex in that area. They have weird hours though so check before you go.

I like that Las Lomas randomly turns into a Tejana club with a DJ on Friday/Saturday nights sometimes.

In my opinion Tuk Tuk Thai has always been the jewel of the area. They switched to a take out model during COVID and you have to ask them to sit down now. Pad Thai and beef noodle soup is great

Saps is where it's at if you're looking for S Austin Thai imo.

I like saps, but prefer super Thai myself.

I think it was someone on here who first mentioned it. Cruzteca is outstanding. Great drinks too.

Moreno BBQ
Satellite ATX
Backspin
The Local ATX
Dong Nai
Cypress Grill
Las Lomas
District Kitchen
Tuk Tuk Thai
Saps
Super Thai
Cruzteca

Cruzteca has become our go to brunch spot. $3 mimosas and migas tacos are great. Cypress is also a mainstay for 15 years. Great brunch and Troy’s Favorite Lunch is awesome. I think I’ve had the whole menu.

Jimmy's Big Burgers on William Cannon/S Congress

Forgot to snap a pic, but here's one from the google

Photo of burgers and fries

I'm not sure what qualifies as "south Austin" but I like Hecho En Mexico and Habanero Cafe, among others.

I would argue that both of those are technically South Austin in the strictest of definitions, but Habenero Cafe doesn't meet the criteria for my particular needs.

Had lunch at Ramen Tatsu-ya today on South Lamar, which isn't really the South Austin I was looking for, but they do have a location on South Congress near Stassney.  It was delicious.

Speaking of burgers, don't sleep on Little Darlin'

Rusty Cannon Pub has pretty damn good bar food and is an all around quality dive-adjacent neighborhood bar to watch a game or meet a large group of people. It's in a super shitty strip mall at S 1st and Stassney which really adds to the vibe.

Friend has played there a few times. I need to go check it out

Rusty Cannon has so much potential, it’s crazy how they get the easy things consistently wrong. Owner from 04 Lounge probably knows better, but because of the food I can’t quit it.

There are stretches of time this place is quieter than a library but you can hear everyone’s conversation from the booths or the pool tables cause no music is playing inside. Then when someone does put money into the machine it’s at max volume. Some random sports podcast recording will be happening sometimes you go in and you can’t ignore it . Seems like Sunday afternoons are when a live band usually plays and that’s good. There’s always a group of people outside that have been regulars for years who get their own setup.

The people working there are the type of people who laugh at saying sportsball. TVs are always on some terrible rotation of channels (think NFL Network on a Saturday at 1pm, or on a Tuesday when it should be on ESPN for basketball games midweek). They have had it on SyFy and MSNBC in the past when football is on. There is a late 20s blonde girl with heavy natties that can absolutely get it, but she just got lip injections cause I guess she was bored.

The food specials were the best and now they have required anyone coming in to have an alcoholic drink to go along with it. That includes half price wings on Monday, and then the aforementioned burgers on Wednesday. It used to be a BOGO special but now it’s buy a beer and get a burger for half off.

Saw lunch South Austin and immediately began missing the burger at Little Darlin. And the vibe.
