A "boring" Week Two saw a massacre of the mid-ranked teams, as more teens went down than [EXTREMELY DISTASTEFUL ANALOGY REDACTED].

#12 Arizona State, #13 Florida, #15 Michigan, and #17 SMU all bit the dust. G5s had a hell of a week, with South Florida (hello again, Billy!), Ohio, and Army all upseting Power 4 teams.

From midafternoon onwards, it's a full slate of exciting SEC action as we get a jump on conference play.

Thursday

NC State @ Wake Forest (-7) (7:30/6:30 ESPN): Dave Doeren is having one of his happy "I'm surprised they did so well!" 8-4 seasons that he alternates with his "They've underperformed my expections" 8-4 seasons. What is it with ag schools and that record?  Wake Forest is trying to recover from Clawson's late retirement and a bare bones roster, which meant they played a home nailbiter with Kennesaw State last week.

Friday

Colorado @ Houston (-6) (7:30/6:30 ESPN): Which lower-tier Big XII school is better? Colorado isn't as good as Georgia Tech. Houston has pounded SFA and Rice, which tells us nothing.

Kansas State @ Arizona (Pick 'em) (9/8 Fox): K-State has been badly afflicted by the Irish Loser Curse, already picking up a brutal transitive loss to Tarleton State. Hello Army Football:

bafkreig4yh7q3475q7yhlhyz5grw2hejbc7sk7k

Arizona wallopped Hawaii, but otherwise not much known about them.

New Mexico @ UCLA (-14) (10/9 BTN): If Nico and his buddies can't handle the Lobos, we need to have a conversation about the future of UCLA football. That UNLV loss was ROUGH.

Saturday

Early

#12 Clemson (-6) @ Georgia Tech (12/11 ESPN): A massive game in Atlanta for the fate of the ACC! Clemson has been powerfully underwhelming, losing a season opener to Brian Kelly and getting in a 0-16 hole to Troy. Georgia Tech won in Boulder and generally looks like a very competent football team. Buzz buzz, Dabo!

Wisconsin @ #19 Alabama (-19) (12/11 ABC): I can't believe Wisconsin is this bad. I thought Fickell was going to do really well in Madison. Oops. They barely scraped by Miami of Ohio at home. This should be very ugly.

#4 Oregon (-25) @ Northwestern (12/11 FOX): Want to see a beating in a beautiful place? Oregon comes to Northwestern's temporary lake cottage to administer pain.

20241019_Facilities_MF_002_z7O8l.JPG&hei

#13 Oklahoma (-28) @ Temple (12/11 ESPN2): What a weird fucking game. The meth trailers trundle north to the homeland of fentanyl trafficking. Hope PPD has Narcan.

Mid Afternoon

#6 Georgia (-7) @ #15 Tennessee (3:30/2:30 ABC): The first massive SEC showdown of the year is in Neyland. Gunner Stockton! Joey Aguilar! Feel the excitement!

Pitt (-6) @ West Virginia (3:30/2:30 ESPN): BACKYARD BRAWL. Are these teams good? No, WVU just lost to THE Ohio University and Pitt hasn't played anyone. But oh my is the hate real.

#14 Iowa State (-20) @ Arkansas State (4/3 ESPN2): Iowa State schedules the weirdest fucking out of conference home and aways. Have fun in -checks notes- Jonesboro, Clones fans!

UTEP @ #7 Texas (-38) (4:15/3:15 SECN): Another cupcake on the trolley. Fewer penalties this time around, please.

#18 South Florida @ #5 Miami (-15) (4:30/3:30 CW): The biggest game EVER on the CW! South Florida's been a rolling ball of butcher knives to start the season. The Bulls won their last game in part due to stupid penalties and awful clock management, so they're already used to Mario Cristobal Brand Football.

Primetime (aka the SEC Variety Hour)

#16 Texas A&M @ #8 Notre Dame (-6) (7:30/6:30 NBC): Catholics vs. Cultists! The sheeple head to South Bend (carefully avoiding the very scary environs of Chicago) to face a wounded Domers squad.

Florida @ #3 LSU (-8) (7:30/6:30 ABC): Billy Napier's roaming comedy troupe heads to Baton Rouge straight off their uproarious home welcome to the visitors from Tampa. That said, Florida has talent, and doesn't this just feeeel like the kind of game Brian Kelly would lose?

Arkansas @ #17 Ole Miss (-10) (7/6 ESPN): Lane Kiffin LOVES losing stupid, chaotic games to Arkansas. This could be another in a long line of brainless melees.

Vanderbilt @ #11 South Carolina (-7) (7:45/6:45 ESPN): Diego Pavia just murdered Brent Bry's career with a furious second half comeback in Blacksburg.

However, he comes up against Dylan Stewart, LaNorris Sellers and.... some other guys. If Vandy wins, start selling your portfolio.

RIP Pac 12 After Dark

Boston College (-9) @ Stanford (10:30/9:30 ACCN): Stanford catches the Eags after a crushing overtime loss in East Lansing (see below). This might be their best chance at a P4 win. Also, why the fuck is this a conference game?

Texas State @ Arizona State (-13) (10:30/9:30 TNT): Speaking of needing to bounce back after a horrifying loss, here come the Sun Devils! Will they get angry, or will Texas State catch them with their pants down?

Minnesota (-2) @ California (10:30/9:30 ESPN): Minnesota might be immune to the cold fog blanketing Berkeley at night. That said, Cal's new QB looks like he might be the truth.

After last week, I don't trust us to cover -41.5

I hope I'm wrong this time.

Hoping for a Ga Tech win

tennesse has their best chance here.

Florida could do something funny

please Notre dame.

Oh lord that Gopher

Every few New Year's Eves there have been sightings of that gopher at the Overlook Hotel.

Good thread as always.

There's not a great place for a weekly potpourri and I don't feel like starting a thread on it, but here are things I've read or found interesting heading into this weekend:

Spoiler

-Matchup records this week are really interesting in different series.

--Tenn vs Georgia - Georgia 29-Tenn 23-2 ties. UGa's win streak is 8. When Dobbs completed that Hail Mary in 2016, that put Tenn at 23-21-2 versus the Dawgs. It wasn't until the early '90's that these two founding members of the SEC played regularly, hence the lower H2H count of games overall. Old SEC scheduling was as idiotic as these two fanbases.

--Florida is tied in the LSU series 34-34-3, but LSU is up 11-4 in the last 15. Florida last won in Baton Rouge in 2016.

--Who has owned the Arkansas/Ole Miss match-up? Recency bias had me thinking Ole Miss. Whoops. Arkansas is in control, 38-32-1. That includes recent history, where they're basically .500 for the last 20 years.

--Ga Tech upsetting Clemson this week is everyone's big upset pick. Clemson has won 9 in a row and 11 of the last 12. They must own the series, right? No. Clemson was a Ga Tech doormat for most of their history playing one another. GT owns the series, 51-36-2.

-Speaking of Clemson/Georgia Tech, the line opened at -9 for Clemson. It's moved 6 fucking points down to -3. That feels like a lot.

-Colorado and UH have a rich history as rivals. They've played once, a CU win in the 1971 Bluebonnet Bowl in Houston.

-If KSU doesn't win tomorrow night, finding a path for bowl eligibility from there gets pretty tough. They have at Baylor, TCU, at KU, Tech, and at Utah left on the calendar. If Arizona takes them to 1-3, they'd need to win out against UCF, at Okie State, and CU, plus take 2 of those aforementioned 5 games in order to get there.

-OU has played in Philly against Temple once, losing 14-7 in 1942. I listened to Keeler on Off Campus yesterday and I'll say this, I ended up believing that at least he really thinks Temple is going to win. He cleaned up in the transfer portal and has a ton of confidence. I expect an OU win, but I've come off of the "OU will pummel Temple" thinking. Maybe this one is a little uncomfortable for the Okies.

-Pitt isn't getting any consideration as a schedule threat to anyone of note in the ACC, but they might be pretty good. They were undefeated last year when Holstein went down, then finishing the season on a 6 game losing streak. Eli Holstein and Desmond Reid are an excellent backfield combo and Holstein looks like he could play at the next level. If Pitt runs off and whips WVU in Morgantown, maybe they're a team to watch as a turd in the ACC punch bowl. They have Louisville, FSU, Miami, Notre Dame and Ga Tech on the schedule.

-Most pundits have declared Miami ready for USF due to the early ranked wins by USF. That's probably true, but Cristobal is considered a mediocre HC precisely because he still finds a way to fuck games like this up. I'm thinking Miami wins, but not by 17.5.

-Ohio is better than casual fans probably think. If Ohio State blows them out, I'm going to be impressed.

-I think Minnesota could be a surprise team this year. I guess this weekend will tell the tale. If they are pretty good, the schedule is favorable besides what I assume are sure losses at Oregon and at OSU.

That is a huge swing

In the five biggest games:

Clemson has looked wobbly. Opportunity for rival Georgia Tech, a 3.5-point underdog. Why I'll be watching the Tigers' offense closely.

Another 3.5-point road favorite: For four years, Kirby Smart's defense has had the number of Josh Heupel's offense, often by locking down the red zone. More on this series below.

This will probably be your first time watching A&M this season. The 2-0 Aggies' offense should be a real test for the 0-1 Irish, who are favored by a TD at home.

This weekend's edition of the Florida-LSU rivalry was supposed to begin Billy Napier's schedule ordeal, but USF started it early. Last year, Napier began salvaging his employment by beating Brian Kelly. Just a touchdown spread.

But the game I'm most looking forward to is, of course, the biggest game in The CW's three-year CFB history. Those upstart Bulls are 17.5-point underdogs at Miami, but FPI would put the line around 8. 👀

The comments on the aggies from the national media reflect a group of people who have not watched them play yet. I think there’s just been a bunch of box scoring reading and highlight sampling.

To be fair, if you're a national sportswriter without an SEC focus (Kirk is a Kennesaw State grad), you've got other things to do besides watch A&M pummel nobodies. What he could have done is ask an A&M journalist what they think, but we know how objective they are.

Been abroad and catching up on games late this week. Wow, it has not been a great start to the season for the Big 12...

- Arizona State losing to MSU

- Kansas State losing to Army

- Baylor losing to Auburn

- Okie Lite self-immolating against Oregon

...or the ACC

- Clemson losing to LSU

- Virginia Tech losing to Vanderbilt

- North Carolina getting slaughtered by TCU

- SMU falling to Baylor

If this was the year for the Big 12 and ACC to prove that the sport doesn't entirely revolve around the SEC and Big Ten, they've missed that chance.

I can't remember whether it was Herbstreit or someone else, but I laughed when they explained that Gameday was headed to Morgantown until WVU fumbled it with the loss to Ohio. I don't know why, but I enjoy rooting against WVU. Dick Rod being there makes that even easier. I've even visited Morgantown for a Texas win and enjoyed it, horns down coping from them and all. Maybe it's just the ease of generally rooting against the Big 12 and enjoying pointing and laughing at all of them.

The minute those hillbillies got into the Big 12 with us, they claimed us as their #1 rival, even though we had almost no history with them.

The poor guys couldn't get into the ACC with all of their actual historical rivals because their academics were such a cluster fuck. Luckily the Big XII has no such ideals.

Not to derail this thread but it seems like Morgantown is either a great experience with alcohol flowing and welcoming people or a bizarre one (to put it kindly) with toothless hicks screaming in your face and ready to throw hands at any moment. My experience was the latter.

We were with friends who went to WVU and they were dressed up in WVU gear, so we didn't get anything besides the light-hearted stuff from others. For all of the "Morgantown is a lot of fun!" that I've read on the boards over the years, I didn't really get it. We black car-ed to and from Pittsburgh, so maybe we missed part of the charm by not staying there, but we tailgated and went to some famous local haunts for food and drinks. Went to the school bookstore, etc. It was all fine, but I didn't find anything extraordinary about the place. They were also very docile after getting pummeled.

Hoping we can get an early multiview with the Clemson, Bama, Oregon, and OU games

Agreed, the town is small but not particularly charming. I went with a group of mild-mannered Texas fans, so it was weird to get so much aggression from WVU fans unprovoked.

The WVU fans were wonderful when I was there for that big homecoming Texas game. After they got the horns down out of the way we had plenty of drinks, hospitality, food, moonshine, the works.

Morgantown is fine. PGH is cool.

I've never been treated better or had more fun as a road fan than my trip to Morgantown.  Utterly first class experience.  Gorgeous setting.  Unique and quintessentially college football.  We were getting flagged down an plied with food and booze every 50 feet.  The morning before the game, a guy in the Krorgers saw us buying beer and invited us to his tailgate.  When we got to the lots, we tried to head directly to it, and it took us 3 hours because so many people stopped us.

Most places I went to road games people were cool (Waco and Columbia, MO being the exceptions), but it was on another level there.

Never heard of a good Baylor experience. My brother went to an Ole Miss - Baylor Sugar Bowl and said the Bears fans were a joyless, judgmental crew whose only redeeming feature was that they cleared out of the bars by 10pm.

It was back during the Floyd Casey days (one of RGIII's first starts) and there were more ISU fans tailgating 2 hours before kick off than Baylor.  We tried to make friends with the one Baylor tailgate and they just sneered at us with their polo shirts tucked into their white slacks.  My buddy claims when we walked up, he overheard them arguing over whose ancestors owned more slaves.

We were in the middle of a multiday bender, wearing shorts, flip flops, and likely cut sleeve t shirts.

It was like a movie scene of culture clashes.

When we went into the game, we realized that we had bought tickets in the middle of a wealthy Baylor alum section.  We had also snuck beers in in our shorts, and about half the group was shirtless at this point (there were 6 of us).  It didn't take long for the natives to take unkindly to us.  A Texas state trooper came up and kicked 4 of us out before the game even started.  I'm not sure why they let the other two stay.  The other 3 guys decided to head back to our hotel, but I was determined to sneak back in.  I found a different shirt in the car, entered a different gate, got back to the original seats and barely said a word all game.

They absolutely fist fucked us.

There is no reason to go to Jonesboro. I’m there a lot for work there is a lot of manufacturing in the town.  It is a shithole.

Miami and FSU had nice wins. GaTech beat Colorado. Hard to tell if either Clemson or SMU is worth a shit.

I think the top of the ACC is pretty good - the mid to bottom is fucking awful though.

B12 seems like a bunch of meh teams again.

Yeah, I'm not exactly beating myself up over it.

But I can dig a shit hole.  A buddy and I went to the 2017 ISU/Akron game in Akron (we've seriously been doing this shit for decades) and had a really good time.  Tickets were $5.  You could drink in the stadium.  The handful of people tailgating were fun, and we drank a lot of beer watching football in dive bars that night.

FCS had a decent tailgate scene in its last year or two (for our standards, obviously not by general P4 standards) and the first year or two at McLane saw a decent setup. Got outsourced to a third-party group for turn-key service and it completely obliterated it again. They stopped that and did a mixed model, but it still isn't good.

I had way more problems with our own fans at SMU last week than I did with pony bros who were all chill and having a good time. Almost fought a plastered dude who kept hitting my wife's chair over and over again even when told to stop. Also, some dude behind me yelled for Aranda to kill himself which was lovely. He didn't take it very well when I mentioned it after the comeback and he was suddenly cheering for him.

As for Morgantown, it was alright. I didn't find them very inviting and definitely had more fun drinking in Pittsburgh with Pitt people the night before the game. We had seats in a random section, and we were surrounded by people from WV who didn't really get into the game even though it was that classic 70-63 matchup. I've had the best luck as a visitor in Kansas & Oklahoma weirdly enough. Sporting KC fans were fantastic to us Austin FC fans a couple years back. BU was #1 when we got obliterated at Allen Fieldhouse a decade or so ago and their fans were really welcoming. oSu did great when we played at Boone Pickens as #3 and got smoked in 2013. I'd like to hit up Manhattan and Ames soon.
