Man I think they’re great. I’d have no problem with a set of them at all. I actually bought a ride or crash for my associations open mic night set and it sounded fantastic.

I don’t really look at them as a tier below zildjian or the others. They’re fantastic.

Well, they're out of the Turkish tradition, so I figured they'd be in the realm.  They endorse two of the drummers she's toured with (Thundercat and Sleater-Kinney) so I assume one of them made the connection.

  • Okay I’ll play. Austin era Fibes kit I just picked up. Original owner was Dan Tomlinson (Lyle Lovett). It was my unicorn set and sounds real pretty. And I also added a new Black Beauty snare.

Not so much pron, but damn...

The concept of recording audio cues for himself to help him out during his first playthrough is honestly genius. I've never seen someone do that before.

Cool clip of Buddy Rich and Desi Arnaz, Jr. in a drum "battle" on "Here's Lucy".  Look at those two kits.  What's Desi playing?  Looks like Ludwig?  Both kits are gorgeous.

You should check out his vid where he takes a shot of liquor every few minutes and tries to play Judas Priest or something. Makes it like 25 shots or so. Highly entertaining

Definitely a Ludwig. And the old Slingerland is in that white pearl is very cool, too.

Such a good series and she’s adorable.

She's really solid, but beyond that, she plays with joy.

Ran across this today. Check out the insane groove by Ginger Baker in what should by all accounts just be a straight rocker beat.

Also, feel free to also note the bad ass Gary Moore solo.

That's about as close as they could get to "Crossroads" without playing "Crossroads".

Today I learned that legendary jazz saxophonist Dexter Gordon is Lars Ulrich's godfather.

That's really weird.

I see it, but that might not mean much.  It's a bunch of drums.

What's the best way to introduce drums to a 7 year old?  Sticks and a practice pad?

A snare drum would be better, but most important (and it's exactly what we did) would be a good teacher who knows traditional rudiments and techniques.  Start the kid out right and the sky's the (potential) limit.  Let them bang around like a muppet and they're already behind the 8-ball.

Slingerland is coming back.

Kinda cool I guess - lots of history there.

Anyone got any new shit?

I just bought a very basic set of drums for my music room as it was all I was missing to have a complete stage set up at home.  Didn't get any cymbals though.  A long time drummer around town I've played with before and who works over at Dallas Percussion knew I was in the market for something simple when people come over to jam.  This set came in and he rang me up and said, "I think I've got your set."  It aint the prettiest or most expensive at all.  I'll send pics when I get a chance.  I just got them.  Haven't even set them up yet.  Too many other dad chores getting in the way.  Our drummer is out of town on vacay and he's going to help me set it up  when he gets back.

Anyhow, I'm open to ideas on how to find some decent cymbals at a reasonable price.  For the guitar guys, I'm perfectly find with Squier quality.  Not looking to go full Gibson Murphy Lab before I even know what I'm dealing with.  Capiche?

I just wrangled the kit I built my daughter back from her, since she's playing Gretsch Renowns these days.  Small (20" kick) Keller maple shells, "hand-stained" matte black (meaning I did a shitty job).  She has an Istanbul cymbal endorsement so I might get some of her hand me downs, but I need recs for hardware (pedals, stands, throne).  Nothing road-worthy needed, I'm thinking PDP or the like?

Sure. But I’d run a dw 5000 or 9000 bdp. I think 9000 series are the sweet spot. I had some of their MFG stuff and didn’t like it.

What’s the budget?

That's a great question.  I'm not even educated enough to know what to look for.  I'm a true newb when it comes to drums.  So far I've spent about $700 on drums and hardware.  I figured the cymbals would probably be an equal amount?  But that's pure guesswork on my part.

I have a lead on something for you maybe.

You can probably get a good set of used hats and ride and maybe a crash for $700.

I was VP of a local music association and bought all the drum gear for them and they were going to liquidate the gear we used for live events. Let me see if they’ve done that. If not - all your dreams are about to come true.

It’s looking pretty good.

What brands/models?  (I'm not looking for cymbals per se, but you never know.  I'd definitely get in line behind the other two posters if anything was interesting and left over.)

Mixed bag of stuff but all pretty good.

I will have some hardware and cymbals for sale in a few weeks out of my stash. All dw hardware and paiste signatures (I think).

Yes, just ignore the random solar/roof/window/treetrim cold calls.

What are your thoughts on Meinl?  Are they in that Zildjian A / Sabian AA pro cymbal league?

Man Ive heard some stuff I really like that are from lesser known brands. I think a few things are in play:
1. Newish companies innovating
2. Production costs decreasing due to new tech or materials
3. Realization that spend for legacy brands was heavy on the name alone

Zildjian Sabian and Paiste were the gold standard for years. They make great stuff and charge great prices. Some of the newer brands sound just as good but charge far less, depending on series of course.

Then, what do your ears like?

That Instanbul stuff sounds great for the price point. I mean studio engineers probably want specific weights and things but the crowd at continental club won’t be able to tell a 200g ride from a 222g ride.

I like the Paiste stuff but I have a ton of it too. If I was buying new gear I’d look at all the brands - fuck the name.
That Ludwig you posted reminds me of my DW set.  Will post pics later when I'm back home.

And WTF were you playing on that orange set?  Jesus man, 24x24 is crazy.

What happened to Ldogg53?
