when my hispanic wife and I were just boy and girlfriend, in the early aughts, we went on a 3 week grand tour thanks to her dad financing two tickets to Europe for graduating college.

Anyways way too much detail.

We started in London and left from Frankfurt with many stops in between. Anyways, we made it to Nuremberg, saw the courtroom where the trial was held (surreal af), and we'd visited dachau and auschwitz on the trip and it was all a bit heavy.

Then we see a Mexican restaurant right in the middle of Nuremberg with a sign advertising margarita specials. Goddamn did we need a margarita, some enchiladas. The margaritas were fucking terrible so we had like a dozen because we fucking needed them. We were 22. Everything was terrible. But we were 22 and ate all of it.

Anyways, I had a great feeling i was going to get laid that night but we got back to the hotel, my wife bought a snickers and threw that up and passed out

I’ve a hunch Mexican food in Europe will improve in years to come. If it hasn’t already. And, bbq.

There's a creditable bbq joint across the street from the train station in Faro, Portugal - young Portuguese guy owns it, not an expat. It's where you change trains in the Algarve so I stop by there every once in a while. It's not even close to what you'd find in Texas/the South, but it's still pretty tasty.

Best Mexican food I’ve had in Europe is in Bratislava old town: amazing al pastor. Whole family from Veracruz, abuelo tends bar and talks about his amateur boxing glory and abuela runs the show with some bemused Slovak waitresses studying Spanish at the university.

The old man is something of a lothario, I gathered, and abuela runs the restaurant social media. A couple times she got fed up, posted long complaints about his errant ways (in Spanish) and announced the joint was closing and she was heading back to Mexico. Within a week there’d be a new post full of forgiveness and promises he’d change his ways, and assurances they’d keep dishing up amazing tacos. Better than a telenovela.

Czech has a decent BBQ scene, Texas style. Sort of reverse cultural exchange since Czechs and Germans pioneered old school meat market barbecue. I knew an expat who imported pellet smokers and sold them to the upper crust, a real luxury item. The best place in town didn’t do brisket but made more than acceptable beef cheeks, homemade sausage, and ribs. All peppery, good bark, and sauce only ok the side. At Thanskgiving they’d sell smoked turkey and fixings. And made watermelon margaritas. It’s good enough that I would eat there if it were in Texas, although not elite.

It can be had. The boy found the Mexican grocery store in Glasgow, and Berlin had several legit taco places.

But opening a place called “Texas Taco” in Northern Europe is a backup plan for both kiddos. Like, Norwegians LOVE tacos…they just can’t make them for shit. Serve them an ordinary taco (carne asada, picadillo, whatever), and their eyes bug out in delight. Germans too. There’s a market there.

I remember being wowed by the Mex in Evanston, back when the Dead were touring. But, it’s a brand new era, and taco trucks are on the move. I’d love to try huevos and Portuguese chorizo, like Machaca. Hot house some chiles, and be in business with salsa calientest. Brisket on Saturdays. Morning tacos. Lunch tortas. Make like you do business in San Antone, and go home at three.

Let me know, and I’ll visit your place, I’ll come early.

Why do you fuckers eat Mexican and BBQ in Europe? You have all of this amazing food to choose from and you blow a meal on a shittier version of something we already excel at in Texas. I’m genuinely confused.

When visiting? I don’t. When living there? The kiddos want a taste of home.

I would hit up this one Mexican restaurant called Alcatraz in Berlin frequently with friends, mostly because the margs were damn good, as were all of the other drinks. The food was tasty, but odd. Not a chili in sight. The fajitas were heavily seasoned with thyme and bay leaves.

I found this great taco place Dolores late into my stay there. Highly recommend.

Whoa. That looks…pretty damn decent. Explain.

whaaaaaaaat ????

maga experts have said the dems are causing this shut down ????

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/trump-online-tantrum-demand-republicans-041400792.html

President Donald Trump has demanded that Congressional Republicans use the “nuclear option” to unilaterally eliminate the filibuster and end the ongoing government shutdown.

“It is now time for the Republicans to play their ‘TRUMP CARD,’ and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post late Thursday evening.

The filibuster is the Senate rule that requires 60 of the chamber's 100 members to agree to pass most legislation. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, meaning that legislation can be stalled if members vote along party lines.

Republicans could eliminate the filibuster using their simple majority, though many have historically been opposed to the move, arguing that it would ultimately benefit the Democrats when they return to power.

Europeans in any given area do their local food - whatever it is - very, very, very well. They've been making it for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years, and enjoying whatever the local specialties happen to be is a huge part of getting to know the local culture. However, outside of the bigger cities there is typically very little diversity in what you can find outside of the local fare. If you spend any time at all in a place you'll eventually want something else, and most of us live in places here in the US where we enjoy many different types of food so we miss it at times. I can't get Vietnamese or Mexican for love or money in southern Portugal and was very pleased to find a Thai restaurant in Tavira that was at least a vague shadow of what I can eat in Seattle (for some reason Tavira has several good Indian restaurants and a new Indian grocery). Amazing as they are, you can't just live on sardinhas, bacalhau, or lulas for every meal.

The great thing about Trump's order to get rid of the filibuster is he finally exposed to MAGA that the Republicans can end the shutdown if they wanted to.  And now, the GOP senate's phones are going to get blown up with people demanding to end this thing today.

Mike Johnson probably uttered the word fuck when he heard of this news.

Fwiw, I just got back from Paris and was picking the brain for restaurant recs of the sommelier for the Michelin starred, top 50 in the world restaurant that cost a plane ticket to eat at.

His suggestion?  A Mexican restaurant in the 11th arrondisement...

Bear in mind this is the Mexican taco I see advertised from casual restaurants:

Weirdly, a lot of the top restaurants in Paris (and Austin) are sushi omakases.  Why do we eat that here?  I mean, Tokyo is just a 15 hour flight away.

We spend $250/week on groceries for four people. $4,200/year isn't shit.

How and where do you live lol

Texans don’t appreciate HEB enough for just the prices, weirdly. I think we easily hit over $250 on groceries a lot of weeks in NC, if you count diapers and detergent and all of the non food stuff as well. We eat at home all the time and have berries and probably a fair number of luxury items in there but also not to a crazy extent. It’s not hard to do.

The fact this isn’t completely dominating headlines like last time is a pretty good indicator of how much more volatile broken our world has become since 2019 and how this isn't going to be resolved before breaking the record.

"Volatile" is not the word you are looking for.  The judges would have accepted broken, non-functional, failed, and fucked.

"Volatile" implies unpredictability.  Nothing here is unpredictable. Quite the opposite.  Throw a Republic off a cliff, and gravity will compel it to continue to fall.  That's what's happening.
