Any chance that Democrats would cave likely (hopefully) ended on Tuesday.

All the democrats need to do is keep putting it out publicly:

"Americans health insurance premiums are skyrocketing in 2026 because of trump's big corrupt bill that republicans passed into law.

We demand they fund the subsidies for health insurance and put in a premium cap so millions of Americans dont lose coverage due to cost. They can do that at any time and this shutdown can end. Or they can use the nuclear option in the senate to abolish the filibuster and the shutdown can end. It's in their hands."

Just keep the truth flowing to the people every way possible. Follow the Mamdani method.

We canceled the holidays. I 100% recommend that.

We're definitely pondering what the drop dead date is for this to end with enough time to not royally fuck air travel.

Our Thanksgiving return fare isn't refundable--and I'm guessing airlines aren't going to do a damn thing to recoup their customers--but how much is our time and frustration worth.

we've got flights to PR the week of Thanksgiving... i'm not expecting a refund from United, but if this thing drags on and flights are legit canceled, won't they at least have to give a credit?

Sure, I can try.

Dems have little incentive to give in on their Medicaid and other budget demands after Tuesday's results and polls showing that Republicans are largely being blamed (and rightfully so, imo) for the shutdown.

Republicans have a myriad of options, but with no singular play that makes everyone in the big tent happy. Even removing the filibuster which gets rid of Dem opposition there is not a 100% chance that all Republicans agree to vote on cutting Medicaid among other issues with the budget. On the other hand, you have those that do not want to agree to keep Democratic demands in the spending budget. Removing the filibuster also opens a can of worms were where there can be more legislation that purple area R's don't want to have their name associated with as the midterms near. On top of that they have to come up with a budget(s) that the president will sign.

Good basic summary.  I would also add that Trump has repeatedly unilaterally overwritten Congressional passed laws (tariffs, selectively defunding departments he doesn't like, etc) and the pubs in congress have done absolutely nothing to oppose it to the point that even if they "make a deal" there is ample reason to believe it will just be overwritten the second the government reopens.   Basically there is absolutely no reason for the dems to in any way help pass anything at this point.  This is what happens when you elect not serious performative people to manage serious things.  chaos.

I'm pretty sure the current administration rolled back the Buttigieg era consumer protections, so I'm not sure what they'd be forced to do, if anything.

I’m not flying again until April.

So now everyone's just waiting around for Trump to force Congress to abolish the filibuster or for an administration and political party famously known for admitting their mistakes to come back to the table and reach an agreement.

My completely baseless guess is something gets done next week, and the GOP tries to wrap in a "we did what we had to do to save your Thanksgiving from those dastardly Democrats" bow.

Not exactly non-partisan, but likely pretty accurate.

The wild card is whether or not Johnson brings the House back even if the Senate comes to an agreement to re-open the government. He's moved Heaven and Earth to keep them out of session to protect Trump from whatever is in those Epstein files.

So Johnson's in the Epstein files.  It all makes sense now.

Well Trump's balls are in Johnson's mouth. And Trump's balls are all over the Epstein files. So by transitive property I believe you're correct.

A buddy of mine that is a government worker had another viewpoint on this - with Trump say that he might not pay furloughed workers, working during the shutdown might be a good thing because it gives you argument that you deserve your pay. I mean it's fucking shitty that we are in the position that we are, but at least he has a point to get his.

i know they rolled back a lot of Pete's policies but surely they can't just take your money, cancel your flight (force majeure or otherwise) and not give you anything...?

Google AI gives this...

who knows if accurate but i guess ill just hope it is for now 😕

I'm pretty sure I remember reading a while back that it had been rescinded.  I can't imagine how this group would have failed to get rid of it since it was a fair policy that helped the public.

Google AI is absolute shit. Not saying they’re wrong here, but it’s completely unreliable.

Obesity Drugs May Drop to as Little as $149 a Month

President Trump announced a deal with Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to lower prices on hugely popular weight-loss drugs for Medicare, Medicaid and American patients who pay with their own money.

ok i ventured to the actual USDOT site...i can find no mention of force majuere or 'acts of god' or even weather, but it does clearly say if the airline cancels or changes a flight more than X hours that you are still due a refund.

Screenshot_20251106_141756_Chrome.thumb.jpg.979c1533d2913aee03ebf525be1fd770.jpg

i don't love how much emphasis is placed on the airline canceling as i can see them trying to claim 'well we didn't cancel it, that Real World dude did' but again... at this point we can just hope.

im sure it will be a shitshow regardless 😕 but hey, maybe he'll start flinging serious shit at the Republicans this week and force them to...do something lol

also...random thought i had last night... maybe the airlines could create a fund and all chip in to pay TSA/ATC in the interim 😆 i wonder what the financial impact of that vs. absorbing 10% canceled flights would be 🤔😄

I called it. These companies will throw some coupons to those paying fully out of pocket. If you use your insurance or Medicare, it’s full price. Which means higher premiums for all.

Which is strange, you know? Usually indifference produces really good government.
At any rate- the biggest “issue,” if you can call it that, is that this spring congressional Republicans did a bunch of things they did not negotiate, and then  added insult to injury when they came back and broke a bunch of deals they had made to keep the government open the last time.  They then dared the Democrats to do something about it and refused to negotiate for a continuing resolution, because they thought Schumer would cave. But he didn’t.
As of now, the Democrats are asking for the ACA subsidies to be restored. The GOP is refusing to negotiate that and Mike Johnson is even refusing to  commit to a vote. That’s where we are now.

I can guarantee a vote that you are also guaranteed to lose.  Senator Thune is a hell of a negotiator.  The fact that he's making any offers shows they're getting desperate though.

We're visiting our daughter in Minnesota for Thanksgiving week. But we always drive because I like driving and seeing this increasingly shitty country for some reason.

Of course we take an extra hour or so by going through Arkansas because I will never be in Oklahoma voluntarily. Ever.

well, if there aren't any air traffic controllers it'll affect everyone.

What's it take to be an ATC? Can I get my shifty, no good, bum of a nephew a job? Just needs to show up and pee in a cup and look at radars? He plays a lot of video games and can maybe repurpose his screen time to look at blips and boops on radar screen? I think he finally got his bachelors...

It's supposed to be one of the most stressful jobs there is.  I've only ever interacted with one ATC and it was in Vegas.  He was off duty and gambling at the casino we were staying in.  He was so insane that it made me nervous about flying home.

Yea the old “I have nothing to offer but I want everything you have!” negotiation tactic is a classic.
