I assume that we all know that illegal aliens or undocumented are not eligible for most of those things.  The one exception being states that allow medicaid for undocumented persons.

And for it to work for the ACA subsidies, you have to file a tax return and pay taxes.

Exactly.  You wanna know how “illegalls” and “dirty poors” are getting subsidized healthcare?  They are coming into the Ben Taub/Parkland ERs for a 10k workup for their cold/flu once their symptoms get so bad cause they don’t have a $30 primary care option.  Until Trump/Abbott tell docs to throw dying people on the streets, each and everyone of us will pay for uninsured people’s healthcare, just in the stupidist and most expensive way possible.

Did you know gov shutdowns aren’t in the Constitution, any law, or Court ruling? They exist because of a 1980 OLC memo—a lawyer’s opinion that everyone just went along with. Before 1980, funding gaps didn’t cause shutdowns. What one memo created, another can undo. How the next D admin can undo it: https://open.substack.com/pub/data4democracy/p/why-americas-government-shutdowns?r=10322&utm_medium=ios

That is fascinating and enraging.

It’s one account on Twitter of the tens of thousands of accounts that dabble in politics. This will never be seen by most people and is already forgotten. You would need it to be picked up by someone interviewing him in real time.

So ACA recipients, like myself, are getting fucked early, but as fewer poors have healthcare, we're all gonna pay the hospital tax and everyone's premium is going up.

Is this winning?

Hooooo boy. This is BAD.>50% of flights today will be cancelled or seriously delayed. 😞 Which wrecks tomorrow too. We just tipped it total chaos. :( https://t.co/N1Fh9U3TnU

Win an election and immediately surrender getting nothing in return. No matter how low my expectations are somehow they disappoint me anyway.

Yeah let's have vote when we won't have any leverage and will lose. Brilliant. If they do this we will have suffered for nothing.

They were terrified that they were winning elections and getting too popular. Can't have that.

What a fuckin joke if true.  Yea I am sure the pubs are gonna fully respect you and negotiate on the next issue in good faith after you cave for basically nothing.  How can you possibly negotiate this poorly when the public is blaming the other side more than you and you are currently “winning”?   I feel like I am taking crazy pills.

It’s weird because I’m seeing half the media Dems say this is a bad deal and Dems caved and the other half saying it’s the radical Rs who caved.

If the Senate Dems cave with little in return but the promise of a vote, the sentiment on blame for the shutdown will absolutely 100% shift to Democrats and Republicans will yell it from the rooftops. Surely they realize this...

In a way, I almost hate the Democratic Party more than maga at this point. I just can't wrap my head around the continued abject fecklessness despite the intellectual edge over the opposition. Somehow we've elected a bunch of politicians that have no fucking guile or will to power whatsoever.

Only the Democratic Party would take away from last Tuesday's win that they should cave on this less than a week later.

Nah. Democrats will be unhappy but normies have already made their minds up and the damage is done politically from the shutdown. It would have been great to get the subsidies restored but honestly them expiring hurts Republicans a lot worse politically than it hurts Democrats.
We can always do this again in February.

This was my first thought as well.

Like I think that might be where we are at right now, a potential/failed centrist caucus coup [contains quote post or other embedded content]

apropos of nothing, here’s a photo of a young chuck schumer attending trump lawyer & confidante (& joe mccarthy associate) roy cohn’s birthday party at studio 54, in 1979

However bad you think Schumer is, he is worse https://prospect.org/2025/11/08/why-does-schumer-keep-trying-to-cave-government-shutdown/

I think the Senate Ds have played this situation about as strategically as it can be played, but Schumer needs to be bounced for a very simple reason: he’s not a good leader, and his caucus can’t trust him.

Klobuchar, Warner and Tammy Baldwin would all be better choices at this moment.

seems very clear there's a specific breakaway group of mods and, in particular, institutionalists trying to force the Senate conference to break or bend Slotkin and Gallego both nos at least going into the meeting because they're not part of the breakaway group
