As long as they have a coach in place by the portal window, there is enough talent on the roster that with enough NIL money they could be ok next year. They have an unbelievably soft schedule next year. USC, Mich, Wash are the only teams they play that are in the top half of the big ten this year. Depending on how those 3 teams are next year, they could feasibly play the entire season without facing a ranked team. OOC is Marshall, Temple, Buffalo. No matter who they hire they can buy their way through that schedule. However, the portal door swings both ways. It would have to be a home run hire to keep the talented guys on the roster. There are no home run hires left in the bottom of the barrel. Edited December 3Dec 3 by nnm

There are no home run hitters left in the bottom of the barrel. There’s no home runs left but you could call up some NFL OC and pull off a double through the gap with that schedule. That’s about as good as they can hope for at this point. I don’t see any way they don’t end up with a downgrade with their first hire after Franklin, but I thought that was most likely as soon as they fired him. Even with the probable downgrade in the short term after Franklin, it was time for him to go after the back to back losses as 20 point favorites. If he had just lost to Ore, osu, and IU, he probably doesn’t get fired and everyone just says “same old James”. Without a doubt one of the best program builders in the country. Several obvious flaws that showed his peak was 2nd tier in the big ten.

It's 50 this season and it was 49 or so last year. It is unique to the academies in that every student is 'on scholarship' and receives a stipend. Add in the extreme differences in culture/ training obligations and academics, and their washout rate is higher than Big State U. You'll find Navy and AF in the same situation.

He is not a great recruiter and is conservative to an extreme fault. Imagine Jason Garrett if he took a bunch of hallucinogens and watched a 10 minute YouTube video on analytics. UNT could have at least tried to go after a G5 coach with some upside. Hiring Neal Brown is punting on 4th and 1 on the 35 yard line.

December 3Dec 3 Seems like Hartline aimed kinda low for his first job. If he had waited a couple of weeks he probably could have gotten a billion dollars out of Penn St.

Seems like an easier path to a title while living in a place with better weather.

December 3Dec 3 I’ve known Terry for a long time and I never thought he’d get a serious look but, it seems like he may.
December 3Dec 3 I can't imagine "the fanbase" would truly support that hire. I'm a big fan of Doug Meacham and how he handled this season as interim but I'd be pissed if he were handed the HC job at OSU, especially if it was because we struck out on multiple other options. I understand Smith won some games whereas Meach did not so there's some difference there but how do you go from firing Franklin a few months after a CFP appearance, strike out on multiple sitting head coaches and coordinators, and be happy with hiring the interim who from what I understand has never even been a coordinator?

It’s basically equivalent to the worst NCAA sanction short of the death penalty. Has anyone ever been hit with a 25 scholarship reduction for one year? I know the portal mitigates this and the new coach will pick up some stragglers before the signing day in February, but this is like a meteor strike on their roster.

December 3Dec 3 It's clear that Penn State jumped the gun firing Franklin when they did, but I can't help but remember USC's coaching search after they fired Hackett. They had some very high profile names turn them down then had to "settle" for Pete Carroll. We know how that ended up. Still, I don't see how Penn State gets out of this without doing the Rodney Terry thing which it appears they are going to have to do.

It's impossible to understate the degree to which the LDS dominates culture, business, entertainment, everything in SLC/Provo, and it's turned up to 11 at BYU, and then that is turned up to 1,000,001 in the football program. It would be really hard, if not impossible, for a non-LDS person to have the credibility he needed to corral NIL $ in Utah, develop the relationships with business leaders needed to sustain a program, and basically just to be respected. And to several posters' points above, I know a lot of LDS plus-size folks. Utah in general is healthier than some other parts of the country, largely due to its outdoor activities and the larger percentage of outdoor recreational athletes, but that's not an LDS thing. They're just as much victims of our obscene American diet and lifestyle as the rest of us. (I'm not LDS, btw. Not even close. But I do know a number of them). Awesome job generalizing diet and BMI and America ….and that relates how to donors ? You need to get more crayons in your safe space . You seem like a typical bigot.
