It doesn't matter that ICE in the cities is failing or the military mobilization is failing.  That's not the point.  They are normalizing troops on the ground in American cities for when it will matter...election day.  They'll be there to "protect" the peace and integrity of the election.

they aren't normalizing shit is what I'm saying - they are attempting it and it's going like a fucking lead balloon. No one is like oh okay this is normal/okay.

You should really read a history book about 1930s Germany and how often the nazis fucked up their plans and pissed off their citizenry until their schemes caught on through cultural normalization. There can be all the resistance you want, and then DHS will helo-rappel down and go Fallujah on them. The State has a legal monopoly on violence, and they have been ratcheting up with zero check on their power.

I really wish I had your optimistic mindset, but brother, America is as cooked as our o-line is.

Yep.  Hitler took power in 1933.  WWII started in 1939.  It took a long time to move all the pieces in place, and this is a much bigger country.

I'm surprised and disheartened at how much progress they've made in less than 9 months.

And what little resistance they're running into will run out of steam.

Dark times are coming, and soon.

I mean, they aren’t being run out of these towns on a rail. They are still arresting and disappearing people, American citizens included.

Maybe I've been too busy to notice. Have a bunch of Republicans been pushing back on these tactics? Are they doing so loudly and unequivocally? If so, that's great!

No shit.  It's not like Fox News and Newsmax are bitching about this.  They are cheerleading it.

Republicans are indeed being brutal and fighting among themselves.....over who can be at the front of the line in order to

The only battle is over who can bow the lowest and pledge the most fealty to the Lord God King And Ruler Supreme Over All, His Majesty Lord Donald Trump.

Thom Tillis is retiring. Murkowski and Collins are concerned, I'm sure, but not that much considering the hedging and non-confrontational language they used.

Who else? Who is drawing Trumpian fire for defying the Orange God?

I'm so confused. They aren't fighting back and are in fact amplifying everything, anti-immigrant rhetoric in particular. The Texas National Guard is about to fucking invade Chicago FFS. Nobody is stopping them. The most hopeful moment of the last year was some stonefaced generals in a room and that hasn't manifested into anything.

If it's about getting low, Abbott has a considerable head start, and it looks like he doesn't want to squander his lead.

This is correct. An incongruence with the Nazi timeline is that the Nazis had 400,000 stormtroopers doing it's work in 1930-31. Trump cannot command that kind of force to do his plenary bidding just yet. But they're working on it.

Saving this for the eventual declaration of martial law.

It really is amazing how you can look at this and think that we're not headed into full on authoritarianism.

Kind of like the frog in the pot?

It’s really weird how all these freaks won’t stop screaming about the powers of the president…. when a Republican is in office. They’re pretty fucking quiet about the whole thing when it’s a democrat. Pretty weird.

Yeah, this country is fucked. Already have the escape plan ready to go for when it inevitably collapses. Just waiting to see who will become this generation’s Maximilien Robespierre to kick off our version of the reign of terror. Scary shit to be living through.

I mean fuck, all it would take to end this madness dead in its tracks is a handful of GOP members in the House and Senate to say, "Fuck this shit. This is wrong" and it's fucking over tomorrow as they would then have the numbers to stymie Trump's every move. They can ice the puck until '26 and then '28. Hell, they could even fucking impeach the asshole and maybe do the right thing and convict his fucking treasonous ass this time.

It's hard to compare the US and Nazi Germany, because the circumstances that allowed the Nazis to achieve power were very different than today in our country. The Germans were living in a time of unparalleled poverty, collapse of institutions, threats to the government by Communist elements and the humiliation imposed by the Allied powers.

We are a very different story with a much more diverse mindset and our economy is strong. While Trump and his minions continue to subvert the law to achieve their goals, it is hard to imagine anything similar to the Nazis occurring in the country unless we suffer from some catastrophic event, like a disastrous war with China or a cataclysmic terrorist attack.

One could argue, and I think will argue in the future, that the internet and social media have had a similar effect as several of the things you mentioned. Truth is we don’t know how this period of history is going to end, but the parallels are disturbing so far.

A dozen senators could even reopen the government.

But it's the Democrats' fault.

You're right about one thing: we are utterly destroying this Republic, to the point that it is unsalvageable, FOR NO FUCKING GOOD OR SANE REASON AT ALL.  If we were desperately poor and starving, I can see desperate people doing desperate things.  And while we have created pretty staggering economic inequality (and wow....opting for a path that says "and let's ACCELERATE that, and create a world of billionaire oligarchs and slaves" is...a choice), we are self-immolating for no good reason at all.  We just like hating other people and blaming them for everything, even things that aren't a problem (sorry, fuckheads, a trans high school volleyball player in Oregon is meaningless).

But you're wrong about something similar occurring.  It IS occurring.  It's not just happening, it's done.  Every failsafe has already failed.  The damage is done.  Now, we just wait for the final collapse.  It will happen as these things always do: gradually, then all at once.

I'm confused.  A motherfucker has tried multiple times to burn my house down, has openly announced his intention to continue until he succeeds, and I'm supposed to just relax and expect him to keep failing?  Is that really the argument you're making, imma?  Because that's exactly what it sounds like.

I would argue that it's far easier to do today than it was in 1933.  The failed business man, reality TV show host and POTUS out front has told us so.

One historian agrees with you. He said fascism arose in Europe due to the economic uncertainty and fear caused by the Industrial Revolution coupled with the rise of Bolshevism. He claims today the technological revolution and the fear of islam/terrorism is causing the same effect in the West. So perhaps those forces are causing something similar.

Yeah, it's over 80 years later, different part of the world, and all of that.

What I was really getting at was how long it took Hitler to get things in place before shit really hit the fan.  We're still in the early days of this rising fascist state.

I don't think we'll see a holocaust, per se.  But this country will get a whole lot whiter and more Christian over the next few years.  And I don't think we can rule out a world war.  It's hard to even know for sure how far these ghouls are prepared to go.  I mean Stephen Miller is like an SNL character for a Nazi sketch.

Our economy is NOT strong - an ever smaller group of consumers and businesses make up a significantly larger percentage of spending. It's a K-shaped economy with the top getting exponentially bigger while the bottom gets steadily smaller.

The stock market is strong, but individuals are fucking struggling. Hard times and complex problems make people look for simple solutions, and trumpism and blaming nonwhite people is a simple answer.

I joked earlier this year about trump DIY'ing his own economic calamity to enable his fascist takeover, and goddamn it's happening before our eyes
