October 11Oct 11 They're outrageously high pretty much everywhere. We are planning a last minute road trip and one of our stopovers is probably going to be in the Nashville area. Even places 20-30 miles away in Franklin or Murfreesboro are still pushing $300 for a mid tier Marriott property next week. And its not just Nashville. The Westin in downtown Houston is $650. W Dallas is $1200. JW Marriott in downtown Chicago is $975. I would have assumed prices would be much lower due to decreased demand and the time of the year. What gives?

It's been a trend the last two years at least. I go to NYC 1 week every month. You can't get a big brand (Bonvoy, IHG, etc.) anywhere in the city (FiDi to as north as Hell's Kitchen) for less than $700/night. That's like lower end too (e.g. Courtyard, Holiday Inn) and up to $1400-1500 night for better properties. SF is the same. Edited October 11Oct 11 by Vegas64
October 11Oct 11 I was told the post Covid travel crazy was starting to slow down. I do know I’m getting lots more personal emails from AA and Delta and heard their bookings are down. But 1000% hotels and rental cars aren’t coming down. My hotels are not higher end either.
October 11Oct 11 I use this for travel and its been good, and if you're an AA member, you'll kill the points. https://www.aadvantagehotels.com/

I think you're noticing that the parts of the economy with the most price elasticity are those serving consumers most vulnerable to inflation. Hotels are increasingly chasing after the same smaller number of higher income travelers and the math of fewer travelers at higher rents pencils out for them.
October 11Oct 11 I mean, is this thread a Lamborghini owner bitching about the price of gas, or what? Spoiler I took the price of my upcoming reservations from my ap: This coming week, The Colony Texas Fairfield $112/ night M-F Following week, Lubbock, Residence Inn $135/ Su-Th Nov 1-12, Chicago, Courtyard Midway $138 Nov 13-16, Houston Marriott Westchase $158 Nov 28-30, Temple-Belton, Fairfield, $138 Feb 10-13, Las Vegas Westin, $219( that market has been at that price for the past 2 years at a minimum.) Are any of these luxury accommodations? Nope, with the possible exception of the Westin. Are they dumps? Also nope. I also plan my travel out 45-60 days out when possible. Work stuff changes last minute sometimes, but if you're diligent you can find decent pricing. I honestly laughed at the notion of "I wanted to go to a touristy area this weekend, and couldn't believe I was getting jammed on hotel pricing!"
October 11Oct 11 Also, "last minute" could vary for different people. If you're talking about the weekend of the 18th, LSU plays Vandy, so that could be affecting the price as well for the Music City area. That's a huge watchout this time of year, along with college graduations in December and May.

There's nothing crazy going on there that day. As for "other" places, I am all for staying in smaller towns or suburbs in "lesser" brands. I do it all the time but I wa more amazed at what the higher and mid tier has gotten.

Maybe it's a plus, maybe it's a minus; but that side of the family won't be in the "Bitch about your Family" thread. It's actually one of my favorite weekends of the year, regardless of locale.
October 11Oct 11 Nashville has one of the highest rack rates in the country, but your search ability isn’t great. The Drury Plaza in Franklin is a decent enough property that is under $200, has free beer at night, and decent breakfast availability. There are also plenty of hotels in the Vandy/right outside of downtown area for under $300. You’re not staying in a JW, but for a night with kids a decent room should be all that matters.
October 11Oct 11 downtown Madison was 😳 (where i'm headed in a couple weeks). i mean not exactly a premier destination. but yeah, woof. 😄

October 11Oct 11 Author The plan was to hit Hot Springs, then on to Nashville to break up the driving with the last few days in a cabin near the Smoky Mountains. The whole road trip idea went out the window and we're flying into Chattanooga instead with a couple of nights there and then up to a place near Gatlinburg.

Maybe you'll find Sue's dad there dealing stud.

October 12Oct 12 when we were in the kentucky/tennessee area just passing through, we found it almost impossible to find a room right along the interstate 24 the day of. ended up 10 miles off the interstate in hopkinsville holiday inn if you need a reference point
October 13Oct 13 you'd think with the VRBO's and AirBnb they would have some comp. I live in a small town on I-10 in the Florida Panhandle and seems like everything is here is $200 plus.
October 13Oct 13 I dunno. I like small town motels, where the bathroom has a sign on the mirror that says "PLEASE DO NOT CLEAN FISH OR BIRDS IN SINK," so I'm maybe not the best guy to ask about this.
October 13Oct 13 But cleaning human remains in the sink is still acceptable, right? I’m asking for @Nicole44 of course.

Family Weekend for UW. Next time try booking graduation weekend and you see you got a bargain!

October 13Oct 13 Paid $100 for a last-minute hotel in Luling this weekend so yeah I feel your pain. Absolute highway robbery.

Banged the front desk chick at the Drury in McAllen about 15 years ago on a work trip. It always holds a special place in my heart but I think that was the last time I stayed at one.

Maybe, but my initial search was for a Tuesday night. Unless the Titans are doing some MACtion, I don't think that would be an issue. Highly recommend Read House in Chattanooga. We were within walking distance of several good restaurants (Community Pie and Tupelo Honey) and an easy drive to several others (Clyde's and Little Coyote). Just got to the house outside of Pigeon Forge. I can't wait to check out the Trump Store we passed on the way in. But I get this view from the balcony for the next 3 days...
