December 1Dec 1 If you’ll allow me to be me for a second, does anyone else see Sochan dragging the team down on both sides of the floor? I’m trying to give this dude the benefit of the doubt.

December 1Dec 1 Well, this game is fucking over. Can’t make a goddamn basket, can rebound, can’t guard the three point line.
December 1Dec 1 Well, great game from Harper tonight. Keldon and Vassell looked good too. The perimeter defense is so bad sometimes, though. Really frustrating.
December 1Dec 1 that was probably one of our better non ant stretches of the season, first 6 min of the 4th.
December 1Dec 1 Author 8 hours ago, Mitch Cumsteen said: Vassell had the best game of his career in Denver so I expect his chucking to be at an all time high and go 2-14 from three. He’s probably going to put up a Valentines Day stat line tonight. 1-9 from three. I was close. He actually shot a worse percentage than I predicted.
December 1Dec 1 The old adage, "you are what you emphasize," still true. The Spurs clearly do not emphasize perimeter defense. Ant Fucking Edwards! He should never be wide open! Under any fucking circumstances! At times they appear so easy to solve. The offense also suffers amnesia at least twice in the second halves of games, and completely forgets its identity. That is the most frustrating part of these games, and it almost always results in a lead being erased in a matter of minutes. If we're lucky, we regain control of the game. Eventually the top half of the league is going to figure out how to exploit this even more, and the games will take on the trajectory of what we saw tonight. Wemby hopefully can continue his maturation and in the process of being "the guy" prevent those amnesia spells. But the defensive issues are extremely worrisome. I have not seen it get better and we're approaching December. I would hate to see a team this good swept in the first round.

Feel like he's been missing some intensity and energy this season. 8 hours ago, hornfan785 said: The perimeter defense is so bad sometimes, though. Really frustrating. Castle and Wemby are basically our only plus defenders. Sochan should be but again - not sure what's going on there. Keldon can't cover anyone. Vassell has little IQ on that end. Champagnie is passable I guess? Barnes is crafty and a pretty good post defender but isn't chasing guys off the 3 line. Harper is a rookie. Fox doesn't really play D. The communication and coaching could be better but it's not some huge mystery why we're 6th in 3PM allowed and 3rd in 3P% against as a team. We're a good defense when Wemby and Castle play and we're a bad defense when they don't. We've had some cute moments without him but we need the big guy back. This is a middling play-in team sans Wemby - although they've done a good job keeping their head above water.
December 1Dec 1 Allow me to grab the lowest-hanging fruit and go with "Sochan's IG is now full of pics of his GF. All offseason and still now part of the season." Maybe he's lost some edge to the undefeated opponent of competitive hunger. That boy is head over heels.
December 1Dec 1 He looks completely lost out there. He’s missing switches on defense, is poor at rebounding, and seemingly everyone he guards either draws a foul or scores. Offensively, woof. He has the dribble hand off down pat, I’ll give him that. I’ve never seen a player so terrified to be wide open. When he’s open under the basket, he freaks out and either goes up to slow or gets blocked. He’s been dunking more lately, but I think it’s because he’s scared to shoot anything. I did do some research on his girlfriend, well done Jeremy. Well done. Hopefully she stays with him when he’s on the Hornets.

That isn’t supposed to be how you do things in a contract year. I’ve always liked Sochan and thought he was the right pick for the spurs in that draft at the time. But he needs to be a demon on defense to justify any minutes because he’s such a liability on offense. Like, he needs to get a black belt from the Bruce Bowen school of kung fu before he sees any sort of consistent minutes. I imagine he’s going to get a ton of DNPs if/when this team ever gets fully healthy.

He's by no means a perfect coach, but he's doing something right. It's just frustrating to know how much better they would be if they could fix these fixable things.
December 3Dec 3 Carter Bryant getting some good minutes tonight. Edey is feasting in the paint tonight without Wemby in there, though.
December 3Dec 3 We're like the '96 Bulls when it comes to winning close games against shitty teams at home. 2-2 over the next four would be a nice result again. Fox and Friends has its moments but I'm really ready for Wemby to be back.
December 3Dec 3 That game winner that Fox missed a few weeks ago, when they didn't give Wemby a look, seems like eons ago. This is why he's paid the money. Harper looked great, Barnes is still Mr. Reliable. I knew we needed vets, but didn't realize they would make this big of a difference. Barnes and Fox have been great stabilizing forces this first half of the season.
December 3Dec 3 Sochan played much better and didn’t look completely lost. Still passing up wide open shots. Vassell was a train wreck. He and Keldon together on the perimeter defense is a horror movie. Harper was awesome as always. Thank Cthulhu for Luke Kornet.
December 3Dec 3 These are the type of games that, when you win 70% or more of them, you're a good team. Workmanlike performances, not perfect by any means, but for the most part everyone did what they needed to do and they didn't panic when they fell behind in the 4th quarter. This is not the kind of games we were winning last season, even before Pop had to step back from coaching. I give a lot of credit not only to Mitch but also to veterans like Barnes, Kornet, and Olynyk, and guys who have paid their dues like Keldon and Sochan. I loved seeing that grit from Sochan getting into it with Edey. The young guns are clearly where most of the talent and upside are, but without the right vets and roleplayers the team lacks an identity and underperforms.

The funny thing about Barnes is that Sacramento was just unloading his contract on the Spurs and gave us an unprotected first round swap in 2031 to do it so they could sign Derozan. He’s been such a fantastic asset to this team. And the morons didn’t even get the swap back when they traded us for Fox. Edited December 3Dec 3 by Mitch Cumsteen

Like I said the other day - this is just a team full of shitty defenders. Not helping is that we don't consistently communicate or display any sort of edge or hustle on that end. We constantly look lost - some of that is guys like Keldon who are low IQ but we aren't even playing to our potential. One of the reasons you'd like to see Sochan be a little more consistent with what he is bringing (he was good last night).
December 4Dec 4 we're so lucky they've been ice cold from the perimeter. the game would be so much different
