If the catcher has the ball, he can block the plate. The runner can only slide feet or head first into home plate as long as his body is on the ground in that situation. Going Pete Rose will be an automatic out.

that's not what the booth ump said to Smoltz.

Not according to whatever rules official they had on directly after.

Can't use arms, hands, shoulders, elbows, etc. You can slide into the catcher while attempting to reach home plate.

Is Pages the best defensive player in baseball history that they don't consider pinch hitting for him to get someone on ahead of Shohei?

No

It's going to be a long night.

This is one of those games that’s a serious gut punch for the losing team.

the booth ump said as long as the runner doesn't deviate from the direct path he didn't have to slide.

the wording in the rule book would be interesting to read.

The sphincters that are going to clinch if they bring in Kershaw...

Yeah he said the runner could “glide” in to the catcher, whatever that means

Could totally make up for that here Schneider

Smoltz asked "if the runner then would be able to run over the catcher" and the booth ump said yes, at that point he can "collide"(not glide) with the catcher.  booth ump answer seems to imply you don't have to slide.

Quote

A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate). If, in the judgment of the Umpire, a runner attempting to score initiates contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) in such a manner, the Umpire shall declare the runner out (even if the player covering home plate loses possession of the ball). In such circumstances, the Umpire shall call the ball dead, and all other base runners shall return to the last base touched at the time of the collision.

Rule 7.13 Comment:  The failure by the runner to make an effort to touch the plate, the runner's lowering of the shoulder, or the runner's pushing through with his hands, elbows or arms, would support a determination that the runner deviated from the pathway in order to initiate contact with the catcher in violation of Rule 7.13. If the runner slides into the plate in an appropriate manner, he shall not be adjudged to have violated Rule 7.13. A slide shall be deemed appropriate, in the case of a feet first slide, if the runner's buttocks and legs should hit the ground before contact with the catcher. In the case of a head first slide, a runner shall be deemed to have slid appropriately if his body should hit the ground before contact with the catcher.

You don’t think charging it to try and throw would have given a better shot?   He’s got an arm
