October 30Oct 30 Oxo. It's a game-changer. Their oyster knife is the best as well. Have my old wood handled traditional one. It's....fine. GOLL showed up with a fancy oyster knife from Maine. It was....fine. But the Oxo ones? Perfect. The point is exactly what you need, sturdy blade, great grip.We have had this same OXO peeler for a couple of decades at this point. It's funny, but I've never thought of whether these things ever wear out. It just keeps on ticking.
October 30Oct 30 Author i use one of those colorful rikon peelers. I like those much more than the other style of peeler but yeah, carbon steel blades so it's one of those items that is constantly on the drying rack. i may get one of those stainless kuhn rikons so I can chuck it in the dishwasher.

Forgot to mention that, it really helps. I don't use it a LOT, but when I do, it makes quick work of things -- mostly stuff like cucumbers and potatoes.

The Oxo swivels and it has two opposing blades which means you can easily change direction on the carrot and cut the peeling time in half.

Yeah, our family's shitty metal peeler from the 1970s had that. But the Oxo blade is serrated, sharper, and more robust, and the wider grip genuinely helps. But I peeled plenty of carrots and potatoes with this back in the day, it worked okay.
October 30Oct 30 Pffft NOOB! This is the one you want! Makes peeling stuff almost fun. Yes, I will fight you, and with peelers it's liable to be an epic battle. https://www.amazon.com/Kuhn-Rikon-Swiss-Peeler-4-Inch/dp/B0089KFZ6W/ref=ast_sto_dp_puis?th=1 This is the way.

The oxo with its swivel blade maintains contact with the carrot and is more flexible than a swiss style peeler. IMO. Also, I think a significant portion of the population is not aware of the going both ways trick. But ymmv
October 30Oct 30 That oxo is the one we've had for a while. Can you sharpen the blades? Ours is getting dull and I'd rather not treat this as disposable.

I just learned of the existence of Swiss style peelers in the last couple of years, so just assumed they were the outlier of the peeler world. Individual bias and whatnot. The both ways thing is pretty useless to me. So much faster to go in one direction. Never mind the safety factor - I've cut the tips off of my fingers plenty without adding an extra way to do it.

October 30Oct 30 Well, that's one I've definitely encountered. I typically just go w/ the knife. This was in April. Just got full feeling back. Spoiler

October 30Oct 30 Haven't had it for very long, but I love to use my big Kitchenaid stand mixer to make homemade compound butters. I make a chipotle and Scotch smoked sea salt version, and a red wine with minced shallots, and coarse ground black pepper for steaks. A lemon zest, dill, and garlic version, for fish. I start with heavy cream, churn it until the buttermilk is released and add the ingredients right before the butter starts to set. CHIEF

October 31Oct 31 These 2: Aluminum foil sheets - breakfast tacos, tenting cooked meats, covering leftovers, bottom protection layer for a small oven item. Zyliss Can Opener - the Tom Brady of can openers.
October 31Oct 31 Fucking can openers. They suck, usually by month 6.I bought a simple hand can opener with a “kitchen gadget” set at wal mart when I started college well over 30 years ago. It’s our can opener today.

November 2Nov 2 This is a new add to our kitchen but it's pretty awesome. Built-in strainer locks so it also functions as an ordinary 6qt stock pot. Also has etched liter/cup measurements on the inside.

November 7Nov 7 My son gave me a rice cooker when I started having to make custom food for our aging dog (RIP, Gumbo). I admit, I was skeptical, and it doesn't make BETTER rice that a pot on the stove, but it's super easy to use and really consistent.

I got my first rice cooker my freshman year after I came home one night from a pretty good party, decided to cook a pot of rice. I passed out and didn't wake up until the whole room was full of smoke and I got up to find a meteorite of rice in the pot. I told the story to my mom (I may have left out the part where I was hammered and passed out), and a few days later, she'd sent me a rice cooker. Damned thing was analog wonder and lasted over 30 years. I've gone through two since then. Don't make 'em like they used to. Edited November 8Nov 8 by dcbc

I had a similar catastrophe with one of those countertop "Fry Daddy" deep fat friers. Drank too much, decided some french fries would be good, left the plastic lid on the fryer, laid down on the couch and woke up about 2 hours later to the gnarliest and most likely carcinogenic smoke because the lid melted and dropped into the fryer. I just threw the whole thing away.

I've got a great one for this tangent... Opening Day of the Longhorn season, 1998: Sep 6 vs New Mexico State. Early game, very hot, and followed up w/ a visit to 6th Street. I was so drunk, I knew it and took myself home around like 11-1130...at that time in my life I *never* went home before the bars closed. Lived in an efficiency on Riverside w/ no microwave. Wanted a bit of ice cream w/ Hershey's so I put some water in a pan, put the Hershey's in the water and put it on the stove to warm up, then plopped down in the recliner and passed out. Woke up to my girlfriend and neighbor trying to wake me up in an apartment so thick w/ smoke you could barely see your hand in front of your face. The water had boiled out of the pan and then the pan heated up and melted the plastic Hershey's container, which dripped down onto the electric element and caught fire. Somehow this tripped all breakers, so no light to help see though the smoke. I am obviously still hammered and the girlfriend isn't having whatever idiocy I am stuck on, so she leaves my drunk ass and goes to her apt. Had to sleep there w/ no AC and in the WORST smelling apt ever. Got up the next day, went to Robert Earl Keen's festival in Luckenbach and left the real cleanup for later - priorities and whatnot. Took like 6 weeks for that smell to dissipate.

November 9Nov 9 “Stupid kitchen shit I did while drunk/high” is 1) awesome and 2) independent thread worthy, methinks. We all have such stories. Perhaps multiple.
