The defensive coordinators he faced as HC at Washington all knew he would not take what a defense gives him. He wants to run what he wants to run like he’s auditioning for something. It’s maddening. When I first learned we had hired sark I read old articles about him in which DC’s he faced offered the harshest criticisms of him about refusing to essentially adapt to the abilities of his offense and to what a defense is giving him. We all know he can do it. But he reverts back to his “I want to run what I want to run with my dudes” default mode. This... 👆 He's done this since his time in Washington. Drove my friends up there nuts. I remember thinking on the day he was hired here that maybe the leopard had learned to or was at least willing to change his spots, which unfortunately he hasn't. For fun I charted us just to see how we produced when in 12 personnel. We ran 35 plays out of the 79 total in 12 personnel. Here is each one Manning 3 yard run for TD Wisner 4 yard run Wisner 4 yard run Pass 3 yard loss Screen pass 1 yard loss Baxter 10 yard run Baxter 5 yard run Shannon 5 yard penalty Baxter 1 yard run Manning 5 yard run Baxter 3 yard run Baxter 1 yard loss Livingstone 3 yard TD catch Wisner fumble 6 yard loss Wisner 4 yard run Wingo 1 yard catch Wisner 6 yard run Manning run 1 yard loss Manning incomplete pass Mosely 8 yard catch Wisner run for 0 yards Manning sacked 8 yard loss Townsend 5 yard penalty Livingstone 6 yard TD catch Manning incomplete pass Moore 21 yard TD catch Manning incomplete pass Livingstone 14 yard catch Arch incomplete pass Manning sacked 3 yard loss Manning 1 yard rush Manning run for 12 yards injured Baxter 9 yard run Mosley 10 yard TD catch So we gained 92 net yards in 12 personnel. The other 336 yards were gained in 11 or 10 personnel. Now this isn't to say 12 personnel doesn't have it's effectiveness. It does, but in my opinion we need to dial it back a bit.
October 26Oct 26 Saturday was a pretty big lesson in the philosophy. Let's wait and see.I’m not optimistic. This isn’t new. He’s had a QB for 2.5 seasons now that clearly demonstrates greater effectiveness with the spread concept stuff.

October 26Oct 26 3 hours ago, William Bludworth said: Yep. Hence why Sark needs to pull his head out of his ass, dumb down the playbook for the frosh WR's so they can get valuable playing time, not go into next year shell shocked against Ohio State, or in conference against LSU, aggy, Ole Miss, ou, etc, in case Wingo drops more passes, etc. They need real time against guys on their level. You don't sign the #1 class for mostly the defensive players to get time. It's a travesty that we have Lockett (better, stronger hands than Wingo), Ffrech who has good hands, and McCutcheon (who has yet to drop a pass and can line up next to Moore/Moseley, or even Ffrench can do the same, and also leave your freak of nature TE Nick Townsend on the bench. It's unbelievable. Is this really how he wants to start next season? With 3 new WR's with almost no experience, and a TE with zero experience to go along with Washington who will have had 1 year of experience? I don't get that line of thinking. It's dumb af. You may be right but you can’t know this if they haven’t been playing.
October 26Oct 26 14 minutes ago, Hank_Hill said: You may be right but you can’t know this if they haven’t been playing. True, and really it's just projection (although I did see Lockett make 2 catches early in the year, and Ffrench once). Wingo is just so lazy, and I don't get it. He drops easy passes. He had 12 passes thrown to him and he caught 5 for 184 yards. Imagine just catching 8 what that could have done. I know I only saw Lockett catch 2 passes, but the difference in how the two catch passes is almost night and day. But you are right, we won't know until we see them both play meaningful minutes. But imo I just think it's negligent to bring in the #2 overall WR behind Dakorian Moore and just sit him on the bench. No real prep or game time. This circle of trust crap has run its course. Every team we have played have had zero qualms with playing younger guys, whether it be WR or RB, they at least want to get them out there for real game experience, instead of holding on to their RS for whatever reason when we, the fans, and boosters would like to see how these guys match up with their peers in a real game. Only McCutcheon has played in more than 2 games, and that was the first 4 and he caught every ball, and I guess now he's a RS guy, too. Sark acts like it's blasphemous if you have more than 4 WR's who can play, and 2 TEs. What happens if Wingo or Livingstone get hurt? Just toss out those frosh and hooe for the best? That's why these guys should have been rotating at least until conference play to separate them on who's ready and who's not. Moseley had been injured for most of fall camp and early in the season, but Sark plugged him right in. Like, how about giving some of these guys a rest and send out a few new WR's to throw off their DC? Every year since 2022 our PPG have gone down from. 35 to now 26. Sorry for the ramble, it's just an annoyance because of preferential treatment for portal guys, but if you're a freshman not named Wingo, enjoy your RS. I thought we might throw in a wrinkle yesterday with Terry taking some snaps, but nope. Those went to Niblett for 1 carry for -2 yds. He doesn't belong at RB, it's obvious. He can't bruise the DL, he can't cut like Wisner. The best scenario is to use him in 21 personnel or move him out wide before snapping the ball, but even then he has trouble gaining yards. I was happy to see Baxter back, but I didn't expect much, which came to fruition, so they just stick with Wisner instead of giving him help all season once Baxter got hurt again. Terry should have been taking snaps anyway just to use as an advantage in the RZ if nothing else.
October 26Oct 26 I like how Film guy calls out the choice of slow developing plays on a 3rd and 2 with an OL that hasnt been able to pass protect.

I think what happened was some players got drafted off spread teams and had to adapt to the NFL style making them look like busts. So highly touted recruits started looking for CFB teams with more NFL concepts and here we are. What is your take on that Slacks? Why are we making offense difficult? It's weird because the QBs that are running the league RIGHT NOW are all spread offense QBs that have talent. Mahommes, Mayfield, Hurts, Maye, Rogers, Love, Prescott, Stroud, Jackson, Allen, Williams... All came from a spread of some sort in college. There are plenty of players that come from pro-style college offenses that can't play in the league. The pro-style College QBs are fading. But, yes, The Manning fam picked Sark to train Arch on pro style and to get Arch out of what he likes to do, which is run. Yesterday is a example of exactly why. If you can QB, imo, you go where you have the chance to make throws.

Not a huge fan. TEs are not good blockers. Easier for a defense to run line games on an OL that struggles to pick up stunts and blitzes. Then you have the TE is pass protection. We saw Washington give up a sack when he was 1 on 1 with a DE. The frustrating part was Goosby blocked nobody next to him, so even with all the blockers in MSU got the 1 on 1 mismatch

Spreading out gives space for quick-hitting route concepts and also pulls defenders away from the box. Brooks is solid but doesn't watch enough Texas football to know what changed.

We have 4 guys in rotation now (plus occasionally DM) with Wingo, Moore, an improving Mosley and Parker. We run less 2 TE sets out there vs Vandy, we'll rotate more guys I would think, but its tough to get 7 WR in the flow with the O we have been running all year , sans Q4 MSU spread. Just my 2 cents. Its going to be hot by 2nd half this weekend, keeping our guys fresh will be key. As @Nicole44 pointed out, IF Sark can adapt we may see the young guys if we can get a lead early to rotate. The Q4 offense was a thing of beauty with at least 5 different guys making plays all over and in flow

Having said that, I think there is some truth to the idea that a simpler spread offense will get shut down when playing more athletic defenses. We see it all the time that offense doesn't scale linearly when playing the top defenses. The idea that you need TEs that can be multiple, NFL route concepts, and multiple run schemes to beat the high level teams is not crazy. It is possible Sark thought he could get to the playoffs regardless and therefore could use the season to get the offense proficient at everything. I can accept this with exception of the current base offense hasn't worked against me athletic teams, because time is even less available when the ball is snapped. Sark's offense relies on the OL winning. worked at Bama... Nowhere else.

October 27Oct 27 How many times have we heard about a Guard or TE being asked to make blocks that most players aren't physically capable of performing. The Film Guy seems to point several out every time I've watched his clips. Like the Guard has to pull, run several yards and block a DL to create a hole or the entire play will fail. I think that only works if you have an OL staffed by future 1st-3rd draft picks like he had at Alabama. Not Connor Stroh. I also think Saban probably curbed his more fantastical ideas when it came to stuff like that. Edited October 27Oct 27 by kevwun

The deep routes on 3rd and 7-8, where guys are not turning there heads until 12-15. Max protection where you get a freshman TE 1 on 1 with DE, while your future NFL LT is blocking air. His peace on things changing were on the deep over concepts that Sark loves. He criticized Sark for all the deep routes vs Florida in the face of pressure. He pointed out that same thing happened in MSU, but Arch made a play to evade pressure and hit Wingo for TD.
