December 16Dec 16 With proper image guidance and effective suppression of his idiot family, the Heisman was his. A tremendous PR opportunity: Scrappy little underdog carrying perennial doormat Vanderbilt to their best year, maybe ever. With a little press conference/public speaking coaching on when to talk and when to shut up (think Costner in Bull Durham: "Know your cliches."), he would have had it made. I'm guessing that his handlers were the same folks that ran Clayton Williams' gubernatorial campaign in 1990. Like Claytie, this little fucker's mistake was letting us get to know him a little bit. Turns out, he got just what he deserved. I guess sometimes things work out the way they ought to, after all.

I was responding to how he created an air of menace though his use of little observations, like the way they were missing teeth, the hate they had for themselves, and how even the air seemed different. Perhaps Cormac McCarthy would have been a more apt reference, or even Larry McMurtry.

First time I drove to NM was from Houston to Pasadena from the Rose Bowl. You could tell the difference when you crossed the Texas state line and when you crossed into Arizona. Now I make the trip to NM to either go to Santa Fe/Taos or up to ski Colorado. I love parts of the state... mainly Santa Fe, in/around Taos, Dixon, etc. but the rest is rough. Crossing from Texas through Clovis, you almost appreciate the quick gas stop in Fort Sumner and then you just want to get to Santa Fe unless you're grabbing Carl's Jr in Santa Rosa. I do like the drive from Cline's Corners to Santa Fe or Las Vegas over past Sipapu to Taos but, if I have my choice, will never do the drive through Roswell and north or the corner by Raton. That stretch suuucks so much ass as you cross into Texas and just keeps sucking.

December 16Dec 16 Thankfully, we’ve moved from Nuevo México. Pavia definitely looks like one of those low rider gangsters from Española. There are awesome and beautiful parts of that state. But there are also places you don’t want to go.

December 17Dec 17 A big stretch from Texline to Raton is called the Safety Corridor. Basically, there are random places where the speed limit drops for no reason ("speed monitored by aircraft"), there's nowhere to stop after you leave Clayton, and the 18-wheelers don't handle the wind so well. Oh, and you're supposed to turn your lights on for safety. It's not treacherous or anything--unless there's black ice. You'll be fine. Edited December 17Dec 17 by Cap33

As a kid growing up in Amarillo, Rabbit Ears, Sierra Grande, and Capulin always whetted my appetite for the bigger mountains you get to see when you cross over Raton Pass and start to see the Spanish Peaks. I've been over that road more times than I can count, at least now you have passing lanes instead of a two lane highway all the way to I-25. My favorite way out of Amarillo, thougn, is to go up Boys Ranch Road, so you at least get more of the varied topography of the Canadian River Breaks, instead of the boring drive up to Dumas.
