Holy shit you dipshits: 9-3 Texas is probably in the playoffs

Featured Replies

BYU's ranked 25th in the Sagarin PREDICTOR rankings.

they also have 2 games against the TOP THIRTY predictor teams, and hold a 1-1 record. Texas tech also only has 2 top thirty opponents. Tech playing Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kent State, and Oregon state as an OOC plus playing the watered down big 12 without a single top 10 match up all year to skate by with...is pretty pathetic

the one thing that saves tech and their abysmal schedule is theyre blowing the doors off everybody by 3-7 TDs each game.

Meanwhile BYUs gauntlet OOC schedule, they outscored their opponents 130-16 in 3 games lol

Sarkisian went on the SEC morning show today and doubled down on both Texas deserving to be in the playoffs and reconsidering the OOC schedule going forward. He basically said, with the SEC going to 9

Haha. Texas has 3 losses and it required overtime to beat Kensucky. A&M is a total fraud and you exposed them (good job btw), so don't get too mighty off that win. Maybe tap the breaks on the bitch talk.

I think Tech is capable of winning it all and I think BYU is one of the 12 best teams in the country that deserves a shot in the playoff. We have lost 3 games in two years. The playoff should not be the SEC Season 2 Electric Boogaloo. 4 teams from the SEC is more than enough.

This is the age of NIL and talent is more spread around. Tech has one of the best defenses money can buy. The SEC does not have the talent advantage it use to have, but some people are looking at Tech and BYU with a pre-NIL lens and just assuming an SEC team is superior because it's in the SEC. Fake news.

Also, by your logic, anyone who loses their conference title game should be out of the playoff. If they can't beat that opponent, then they don't deserve to be in. Only Ohio State or Indiana but not both? Only Alabama or Georgia? Is that how your logic works?

BYU is by far the lowest  ranked  playoff team in the sagarin predictor. and its 3 pts lower than the next closest team playoff team, Oklahoma, 4 pts below Texas and our 3 losses, +OT wins vs MSU and UK lol.

14 pts below Ohio St. Its cute you think BYU is one of the 12 best team that deserve a playoff shot(youre 12th out of 12). just make sure to comeback and update us how things go.

On the OTF Roundtable video last night, Burton seemed pretty upset about the Longhorns potentially being left out, but then he argued that the SEC should go to a 10-game conference schedule as a result.

How does that achieve anything? Isn’t the committee showing that total number of losses matter more than quality wins?  Adding SEC games doesn’t help minimize losses, that’s for sure.

Even going to a nine-game conference schedule seems misguided now.  I hate saying that because I really like the rotation they set up, and I hate saying to avoid big non-conference games in the future, but playing those games doesn’t optimize your chance to make the CFP.

Sounds like the SEC needs to shore up getting its teams ranked higher...

or maybe stop gaming their conference slates...

or own how it has everything it wanted and the fish still jumped out of the boat.

You know the more I think about this the more I think an even more hilarious result could happen.

Wanna talk “chaos”?

What happens if BYU wins?

Tech won’t drop out being top 5/6 with only 1 loss now.  And 11/12 are earmarked for the ACC/G5 champ(which is dumb we all agree).

So who drops?  #8 2 loss OU?  #9 2 loss ND that no one here believes the committed will not have in the playoffs?  Or #10 Bama(who I shouldn’t drop based on playing the SEC title game or so we’ve heard)?

Talk about absolutely pandemonium if either other those 3 gets dropped.

BUT the best thing is all the OU/Aggie fans crowing about how, even though we beat both, we’re sitting at home for the playoffs will be hilarious to throw in their face when/if OU is left out for BYU.

So while I think the best result for Texas, is Bama/BYU losses to get an outside shot of getting placed at 10(not likely I know) over both.  I think BYU winning would be the most crazy, realistic, thing to happen this weekend.

Edited by Drew

If Tech had played Florida, that would have been the 3rd most difficult team on their schedule per FPI.

Also yes I think Bama should drop if they lose and have 3 losses.   The whole “you can’t drop if you play in the CCG” is not a rule anymore than “not being penalized for tough OOC games” is.

we’d have a stormy argument against them and should jump BYU/Miami anyways IMO.

Watered down Big 12?

until two years ago all I heard here was how great it was and how the SECSECSEC was overrated.

2 games out of 12 game were against one of the 30 best teams in the country. Yes, just because there 18 teams in the B12 doesnt make it some powerhouse conference, hence the "watered down" Most other playoff teams play at least 4-5 games, minimum vs top 30.

Nobody on earth ever said the Big12 was great when Texas and OU were in it. if it was great, why would they bail? It was only relevant because of those 2 teams alone.

Oh i guess TCU made that cinderella run once, then got buzzsawed by 57 points in the championship

I would say it’s likely Tech finds a way to fuck this opportunity up and lose to BYU. Tech doesn’t know how to handle success, they have no experience.

You mean before it lost its best 2 programs by far? At any rate, no one was saying the big 12 was great 3 years ago. Over 15 years ago before alignment fucked with it, sure.

I agree.  And it’ll cause the most chaos.

doubt a 1 loss tech who’s at 5 now, most likely, falls all the way out of the top 10. So that means one of OU/ND/Bama will.

so OU does nothing to deserve a drop but does.

or

ND gets dropped when we all know they want them in the playoffs even without a schedule to deserve it.

or

Bama loses the CCG and gets punished for it causing that Game to be even more outdated and no one will want to play in it.

the new mythical SOR - this seems like some bullshit

The "strength of record" (SOR) for an average top 25 team is the probability that an average team in the top 25 would achieve the same record or better given the team's specific schedule. It’s a metric that measures both the quality of a team's record and the difficulty of the games it has played.
  • How it's calculated: SOR compares a team's actual record against its schedule to the record an average top-25 team would likely achieve with that same schedule.

This is a valid way to calculate it, but as far as using it for selection criteria, they should be using a generic 10th-ranked team because that's generally the cutoff.  I use two measures of SOR and this is one of them.

This.  I'm not sure if we should be in or not, but what would really get me riled is unequal treatment.  Which means Bama is out if they lose and so is the loser of Tech/BYU.

I want us to get in. But if we don’t it’s because our loss to Florida was after a bye week and never ever ever should have happened. ever. Not in year 5 of a top 5 NIL Sark led team that cost around $30 million. Period. If we don’t get in we all KNOW why.

Take it up with sark who clearly wasn’t ready for our first SEC game, after a fucking BYE week, didn’t have the team ready, wasn’t engaged on the sidelines, made no real adjustments after the half and he legit keeps thinking 3 losses will some day be a thing soon for the CFP. If they want to play a reasonable schedule being in a pretty poor conference they could make that happen. Go schedule two of Michigan, Ohio state, Penn state, USC, Oregon or a top 1/2 SEC team. Go look, instead, at who they chose to schedule.

They could.  And they won't.  We all get the new calculus.  Mid to lower tiered programs absolutely need to schedule harder teams going forward.  Primarily SEC and BOG teams absolutely do not.

The funny thing about BYU campaigning is that they control their own fate.  This weekend is their first round.

The truth is we have no evidence to say that Tech can play with teams like OSU or Georgia. SOS is interesting, but it is not going to tell you who is the best team. I always use UNLV NC hoop team as the example. Amazing team with NBA players all over it, but terrible SOS. They are a wildcard. 59th SOS is ugly.

11 minutes ago, immamac said:

Agreed. I don’t think they’re one of the 12 best teams, but they can certainly argue the point. Others schools’ posters make this a better forum.

Hey I want to be independent like Notre Dame. The SEC refs alone are reason enough for me. That Georgia v Auburn game was reason enough for me. Be independent and schedule what we want. Fuck being in a conference. We will get in every year. Just like Notre Damnit.

It's precedence vs common sense in the decision to include Texas. Does the committee value the beauty contests of the bygone era or is it ready to break the mold and usher in a new model suitable for playoffs? I hope they choose the future but I won't be holding my breath. Also agree that conf championships will also affect the final selection.

If Texas scored two more TDs Saturday I bet they would have been in.

That would have been incredible. Would they have counted? 😉

My opinion is that the playoffs beyond the top 6 seeds need to be truly picked as teams that have a legitimate shot at making a run.

Texas is 1 conference win away from being a home playoff host and potentially having a bye week. They are also 1 conference win away from complete irrelevance. The parity this year is higher than ever before and that's what is keeping Texas as a bubble or first out team.

There just isn't a reason to give auto bids to anyone.

BYU fell down 14-0 to 3-9 clown car Colorado in Boulder and ended up winning that game by a FG with the game in total doubt until the very end.

BYU needed 10 points in the last four minutes to force overtime against Arizona and then needed double OT to win.

BYU was down 24-10 late in the first half against also ran Iowa State.

BYU was down 14-0 to 5-7 UCF at home two days ago.

We can play the lol close call/we looked shitty conference game all day long.

I think the Big 12 is a pretty good league this year. I don’t really think BYU should be “punished” for losing to Tech this week while 95 percent of the rest of the teams sit home, but BYU’s current resume doesn’t scream no doubt Top 10 team to me with its best win being a top 15ish Utah in Provo.
