Waking up in NYC to the Mamdani win, the end of Cuomo's political career, and the Bergdorf holiday windows under construction all point to a great holiday season.

You never forget your first boner. I was eleven years old and went to the local 7-11, where they had girlie magazines out in plain view. I'll never forget. It was Shannon Tweed, Playboy playmate of the year in 1982, who had that effect on me. I'll never forget her outfit. She was wearing .... oh, wait ... you said DONER.  Nevermind.

Was looking at site traffic and dumbass me was like wtf happened last year on the first Tuesday of November? Why is traffic down 50% YoY on that day. I was like damn the CFP selection show was lit and I don't remember it.

Dumbass me keeps scrolling haha. Becomes obvious.

The election went better than expected but the triumphalism makes me nervous. This is a bit like beating Sam Houston State on week 1 and declaring the national championship inevitable. My dudes the right still controls all three branches of government and we are potentially decades away from undoing all that they have done even in ideal circumstances. This is no time for complacency.

Yeah well...we'll see. Let's see those kind of results in Texas or Florida among Hispanic/Latinos then we will talk.

If anything I’m seeing people more motivated because of this

If those numbers happen in Texas and Florida, both those states turn blue and both houses of congress have massive supermajorities in 2026 and 2028.

Color me skeptical.

Exactly. Now maybe those numbers are just reflective of those specific states that voted: Virginia, New York, and New Jersey. But if they comparing national voters vs this most recent election it doesn't necessarily mean the tide has turned. Things will be more clear next year. The battle has only begun.

Hope so. I am still getting PTSD from 2008 and 2020 when we thought something great had happened.

Hope, in reality, is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man.

It was barely temporary. To me the lesson is the election is not the end of the struggle, it is just the beginning. Things have to go well in New York now.

You're absolutely right but it's also damn sure better than losing to Sam Houston State.

Those numbers are snapback from independent voters going with Trump. I don't think anyone seriously thinks those percentage moves are going to be replicated in hard Republican electorates.

While true, in a national election a shift of a couple of percentage points can change the outcome.

That's amazing.

Interesting. I expect the GOP to hold on to this but they are having to work for it:

Going back to the elections earlier this year, it's worth mentioning Katie Wilson's defeat of Bruce Harrell in the Seattle mayoral election.

While Seattle isn't nearly the size of NYC, her election surprised me much more than Mamdani's.  Harrell is a moderate Democrat.  The two biggest things I disagreed with him on was that he was more aggressive on clearing homeless camps and that he refused to put in traffic calming measures (speed bumps, cross walks) on a road near my house that is popular with pedestrians and bikers.  Wilson, is okay with being called a Democratic Socialist, had pushed for a payroll tax, had previously pushed for defunding the police, and is big into mass transit.  I don't think she's ever held public office.  I'm not sure if this Facebook post will show, but she had previously been struggling with daycare expenses.  She may be the most surprising mayor of a major city that I can think of.  Of the People, by the People, for the People.

What was interesting was the emergence of progressives embracing YIMBY rhetoric (NYC, Seattle and LA off the top of my head) and its seeming success as a political platform (Minneapolis with the notable traditional left NIMBY failure).

If you look a bit further south, about halfway between Seattle and Portland, you'll find that the city of Longview (and another one, can't recall at the moment which) flipped their city government from R to D. Now, this part of the state is about as hard MAGA as they get around here - Lewis County is Alabama with scenery - so this was an even bigger surprise to me than Wilson's election.

I didn't dislike Harrell, but along with the things you pointed out he continually slow-walked the residential rezoning process mandated by state law, to the point where even Spokane currently has more liberal upzoning.

And the R is a Hugely MAGA West Pointer.  It's pretty amazing that it's this close, but the Rs in Tennessee have pissed off plenty.

2% difference with 5 undecided and a 4 moe. Going to be hand counting and recounting those votes.

One of the most interesting phenomena in local politics is the nearly perfect overlap of people who demonstrate a reactionary anger about multi-modal transportation planning and people who think wishing away the homeless can work.

This one is more or less the MTG demographic. TN-7 is intended to dilute the influence of some of the Nashville suburbs/exurbs in the same way GA-14 is intended to dilute some of the Atlanta suburbs/exurbs. Not surprised that the R is a batshit nutjob, that's by design and the way MAGAts usually win these districts. What do we know about Behn?

Additionally this is an R +10 district that also voted for Blackburn for Senate and the previous incumbent (Green) by more than 20 points.

If by some miracle Behn wins the GOP is going to absolutely implode.
