November 4Nov 4 Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, Kentucky is currently closed to arriving and departing flights, following the crash of (UPS2976), a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 being operated as a cargo plane by UPS Airlines that had just taken-off from the UPS Worldport in Louisville. A massive fire is currently burning near the airport — engulfing several nearby buildings — with a shelter-in-place order having been issued for a five-mile radius around Muhammad Ali. November 4Nov 4 Author Authorities are reporting that at least 25,000 gallons of jet fuel was onboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 at the time of the crash in Louisville, Kentucky.
November 4Nov 4 Author Fuel fire on take off? Wing Fuel bladder rupture and ignite from engine thrust? Those on the ground videos look like a massive spread of fuel igniting all at once.
November 4Nov 4 Author It looks to be down in the industrial park and not into the neighborhoods to the west and south,
November 4Nov 4 I’ve told some people in person that it might take a plane crash to reopen government. Tracking the fallout from this.
November 4Nov 4 Just now, Pato del Muerto said: Damn. RIP to those poor folks up front. Yeah...that's f'n awful. And here's hoping there weren't (many) casualties on the ground.
November 4Nov 4 Whatever caused it, the left engine looked like it was on fire while trying to take off. Just awful.

Absolutely tragic. We train for this all the time so I’m sure they were busy planning to get airborne and come back around to land . May have only gotten an engine fire indication, not knowing how massive it really was. 2 minutes ago, 956 Worldwide said: I’ve told some people in person that it might take a plane crash to reopen government. That said I don’t doubt this will be politicized to the extreme.

Yeah, that was a "this plane is fucked up beyond all help" problem, not an ATC problem. WTF causes that, and it had to have been bad and fast for it not to have been able to get airborne.
November 4Nov 4 To clarify— I don’t think it’s an ATC problem. The fallout will be general jitters, demands to do crazy things like pay the NTSB that responds, etc. It’s a little jolt of “the government does things you need.”

November 5Nov 5 These things usually don't happen without someone or multiple someones fucking something up. ATC might not be directly responsible, but it's a fair bet that the added stress on air infrastructure more likely than not played a role.

November 5Nov 5 Popular Post Mentioned before my sis-in-law is a Captain for UPS. She was at the facility and just finished annual simulator training when it happened. They could see the fireball from their window. There may have been 4 jump seaters along with the crew.

November 5Nov 5 That shouldn't be possible without sabotage. UPS either not doing proper checks or something was purposefully done here, right?

Have they announced the name of the pilot, yet?
November 5Nov 5 Apparently flying to honolulu. I assume an MD-11 is at max fuel capacity to make that hop.

Perhaps the engine departure and resulting fire destroyed the leading edge devices, or enough of them anyway, to preclude the wing generating enough lift. Kinda like, only kinda, the AA DC-10 in Chicago.
November 5Nov 5 Uncontained engine failure and I assume engine 2 ingested debris. It rolled left and didn’t get lift. Whoever approved the chemical factory at the end of the runway though ……
November 5Nov 5 Now Tom Hanks will never get his volleyball companion and poetic inspiration to escape his island prison! oh fuck that was FedEx. My bad. Carry on.
November 5Nov 5 im no expert, but gonna guess losing engine 1 on the tarmac was clearly a result of the ATC being a skelton crew. sarcasm Edited November 5Nov 5 by AUS-97HORN
November 5Nov 5 Provide updates if you get any. This seems really fucked up. Last I heard from her they weren’t sure which of her colleagues were on the flight. Her hubby flys for SWA and there are incredibly thick- skinned when this kind of shit happens.

November 5Nov 5 the engine will shear if the damage is bad enough but there’s this too Edited November 5Nov 5 by HiggyBaby
November 5Nov 5 2h maintenance delay and the fn engine falls off on takeoff. fuck. some people not gonna sleep right for a long time.

November 5Nov 5 I hate to read this, while I'm actually on a flight. Thoughts and prayers, and a good stiff drink before getting in my connecting flight
November 5Nov 5 the engine will shear if the damage is bad enough but there’s this too WTF? At the end of the 2 hours of maintenance, did the “check to make sure you reattached the engine” box not get checked?
November 5Nov 5 1 minute ago, Brisketexan said: WTF? At the end of the 2 hours of maintenance, did the “check to make sure you reattached the engine” box not get checked? Un contained failure of the fan section possibly produce enough imbalance to torque the thing off? You can see that the fan is not attached to the engine core laying on the airport.
November 5Nov 5 Author So let me see if this sounds right/plausible. #1 has an uncontained fan failure, sheers off and debris shreds the other engine on the wing. While that engine is failing the hole from #1 is spraying jet fuel all over the tarmac and everything else. Plane impacts the plant at the end of the runway and flash fire ignites all the fuel trail and we get the apocalypse now napalm fire ball from the clip up top?

An 18 inch fairing fell off a Continental DC-10 and ended the Concorde program and supersonic travel.
November 5Nov 5 A good friend of mine is an international UPS pilot. It seems like a pretty awesome job. You hear all the cool stories and kind of forget there’s this danger involved. I should get some intel at a band competition tomorrow.
