Let’s do what everyone does and strike a deal with PE for a great injection of cash! We’ll use it to smartly get on a sound, long-term footing and then we will be healthy AND PE will make their money back.

Three pretty good restaurants have gone tits-up in this location, but I can make one work here.

Designing the entire world to function to serve the narrow interests of the generation born after WWII has consequences. Programs have been fucking over their core future fanbases for years in favor of chasing the high-end alum and corporate $$$.

It must suck to be a poor.

Was just thinking the same thing. When something seems crazy, follow the money.

My cynical thought is PE noticed a bunch of egghead dorks in charge of billions of dollars.  They figured a few fancy dinners, all-expenses paid vacations and exotic strippers would let them get their grubby hands on said money.

Sounds like this isn't happening unless all 18 schools are on board.

"Unity of the 18" huh? I wonder what their response would be if Rutgers and Northwestern were the holdouts.

Hold the fuck on here, pal.

How exotic are the strippers?

I still don't understand why the BIG feels the need to do this.  They already have the most lucrative TV deal.  Are they mismanaging their funds?

The whole thought of Universities and their athletic conference getting in bed with PE is mind-numbing.

Its because the arms race in cfb wont stop and many of them know that they wont have a chance of keeping up without large infusions that come from outside their traditional base of donors, ticket sales, etc... The entire premise of college athletics is fucking ridiculous right now. Va Tech just committed to spending an additional $230 million on athletics over the next 4 years. For what fucking purpose? To continue to not win shit when it comes to football? A not insignificant portion of figure is coming from Va Tech general university funds as well as an increase in student fees. The tail is wagging the dog at more and more universities. What the fuck is the point of all of this?

It would be interesting to see how the deal docs account for opt outs by big programs like USC and Michigan. Is there a set step-down of the deal price? How much? Does anything just kill the deal altogether?

Quoting myself.

Looks like the answer was that this deal only works with the big dogs on board.

Between the lines:  Our bitcoin investments have been poleaxed and we don’t have the money any more.  This is a way out without spooking our investors.

Well no shit. You don’t have to be a Princeton MBA to figure that out.

Princeton? You mean Clown College??

Money.

But cui bono?

They have to spend money to make money that is not guaranteed.  VT looks to spend an additional $60M for each of the next four years.  So they can get a more lucrative TV contract via the ACC?  Will their share even exceed the $60M?

Right now, the SEC distributes less than that annually to member schools (~$52M).

And the money is going to people outside the usual sphere of university concern:  coaches, players, building contractors, etc.  This doesn't enhance their ability to be a university.

Oh hell no it doesn’t. But when you’re a small fry and can’t see how to make it with the big fish in the pond, you get desperate to survive. And lookie there, here comes Johnny Moneybags with a fat check they can have today.

What? What do you mean Michigan called it a payday loan and won’t take their big check?
